The driving is meant to be a bit floaty because it was designed after legendary chase scenes in older movies, where cars would slide easily and let off much more smoke than realistic. Drive it with the sliding in mind and it all makes sense
@@robotman5105 The same people complain about driving in GTA 4. "Hurt durr, GTA 4 driving is unrealistic because I can't make a 90 degree turn at 80 MPH in a front-wheel drive car".
Driver San Francisco may be a love letter from Reflections to their beloved franchise. After years of them trying to make Driver like GTA, they decided to make the latest Driver go back to its old style: driving, no guns just driving, and I loved it especially when they decided to use licensed cars instead of fictional cars to make the city of San Francisco stand out.
The "loose" driving feel is the whole point - if you change your mindset to imagine your in an old school car chase movie and driving as such, you can understand why it's about sliding around corners instead of doing a racing line.
It's also what makes the driving feel so great! It's not like the recent NFS games where you tap the brake and your car starts magically drifting, albeit terribly. Each car has its own unique handling characteristics based on the drivetrain and you can feel it. It's got its realism to it, but still a very arcadey type of handling, which feels buttery smooth to control.
Guy who played a good amount of DSF online here almost a decade ago, driving has never been perfected in almost every Ubisoft game. This is just not a surprise anymore, but I will say it was worth an exception considering the handling here helped increase the skill ceiling of the online dramatically on top of the shift ability during its prime. I will not lie though. Like most singleplayer Ubisoft games with tacked on multiplayer modes, the online was not without flaws-but it still took a substantial amount of skill at its core. It… well ‘was’ a very necessary evil to keep the odd vehicle handling the way it is.
Can you guys stop mentioning that ”2nd person mission”? This game was literally my childhood, and it genuinely hurts to see that it'll be remembered just for that one mission.
@@robyjacker Brother. No-one asked. The game was remembered for. It's remembered for so much more. Just because some people like that mission doesn't give you the right to act like an idiot on the internet. You're so immature.
At 3:08 that thing is a McLaren F1, it used to be the fastest car in the world, and it's still the fastest within its category of naturally aspirated cars. Hope that helps :)
3:15 It's because this game has no anti-lock braking assist. You have to modulate how far you're pressing down the left trigger so the wheels don't lock up
I love D:SF so darned much. The handling is tailored to be reminiscent of 70's classic chase films, where cars skid through junctions and pull sick jumps and other stunts on the regular. Yes it's not a handling system for everyone, but it's not only super satisfying to hit a smooth slide through sweeping turns... YOU CAN ALSO DRIFT ANYTHING. Semi-truck? Swing that trailer like it's a wrecking ball. Tough but so satisfying.
It's funny, this game is ridiculously hard to find for PC, yet its a piece of cake for console. Most gaming stores that sell xbox 360 games sell it, and it's backwards compatible on the new Xbox Series consoles.
Me and my friend used to play the lobby of this game rather than the races. It used to have this car drive around the map and it as unstoppable, so me and my friend made this huge roadblocks with the shift mechanic just to watch dozens of cars get flung across into the sky and across the map. Used to love doing that.
I am so happy people are still finding and playing this game! I been playing since day 1 and own copies for PlayStation and Xbox!! Thank you for this video I love it and earn you a subscriber!
I remember getting an xbox 360 copy after watching a Nerd^3 (NerdCubed) video on it. It was super fun, I'm not a fan of solely driving games, but the mechanics and the story actually made me enjoy it. I think I still have the case and disc lying around somewhere.
I disagree that the Driving mechanic is not great . Imo this game has one of the best Driving mechanics I've seen in a game. The cars only loose control if you get cocky on your own, Drifting is more skill based as you can't just speed up and drift immediately instead you have to slow down before approaching a corner and then drift and fight to take back control. And also when you're normally driving, sometimes you spin out of control and then you can slow down again and fight to take back control. Tl;dr Not every out of control scenario can be solved by just speeding. It's a lot more skill based that you need to learn a little and that's what makes it so good
"Whatever this thing is" Stopped watching when you didnt know the name of one of the most iconic cars in the world, that held the topspeed record for like 10 years+ for production cars.

PC version which I bought recently is still sealed(about 60€?). After 10 hours of playing Iˇm still enjoying this game, but you can see how easy it is instead of Driver 2, which was pain.. Never played the game but heard good things about it. I’m so glad I found your channel. I know a lot of people share my love for achievement hunting but the way you talk about it and edit your videos just deeply resonates with me. Keep up the good work.
Driving games like this deserve so much more credit, I recently just played this game again after not being able to play it for years due to my ps3 breaking down and it felt so nostalgic and is still as fun as it was years ago.
Man, I love this game, such a brilliant and unique game. And I like how by the end of the game, if you try to shift in the real world, Tanner will say that he can't shift since he's no longer in a coma, a very nice touch of detail. Sad that the game is no longer for purchase on digital stores if I didn't remember wrongly due to lincensing issues, but SteamUnlocked is your friend.
Good review but i'm glad you said you're not a car guy because the driving is another big part of what makes this game so good. the physics are more realistic than many games now
That notable mission where you controlling tanner's challenger in perspective of the chaser was called "SECOND PERSON PERSPECTIVE" which is a rare genre in video games world, just to show you how unique this game is
When I saw the first perspective switch my brain was like " oh so this games kinda like a heist game where the change of perspectives is meant to represent people following specific tasks that delay police or other opponents ect ect." that's a fun way to explain away a fun game mechanic. I was not expecting that the main character was possessing people to make those choices.
Aw man i love this game. Shifting mechanic is surprising and i hate it at first because i didnt expect this game to be "supernatural". But once i get the hang of it i come to love it very much.
Why are you complaining about the driving mechanic that you thought sucks, but not properly driving throughout the gameplay? I think this game held the best arcade driving mechanic to date because it's so satisfying. I can even drive in a cockpit view with just a one-handed keyboard without crashing at all. It's a perfect balance between fun arcadey driving and semi-realistic car physics.
Still have this game. Played it a few times. Final mission is so weird af. I remember being so stoned and driving the car from the perspective of the person that is chasing me. Overall it was the best driver game imo. Let's not pretend like driver 3 and parallel lines were that great.

This was a great game. Genius game mechanic that you could exit your body and jump into any other driver/car. If you where chasing a car you could setup all kinds of road blocks and crashes on the fly.
I loved everything about this game except for the fact that every car was automatic, would have been cool if there was manual mode. Other than that I put tons of hours into it.

When the online multiplayer was working, that was something else. I had started the race in a real slow lemon then midway using Tanner's special ability I turned into a Lambo and smoked everyone.
