'Can Russian ruin half of Kyiv with a thing like that?' - 'Easily'. Nuclear threats from Russia

  • In a radius of 260 meters from the epicenter of a nuclear explosion, due to the high temperature, only a stain may remain from a living person. The nuclear warhead placed on the Tochka-U ballistic missile is enough to deliver an attack five times more potent than the one in Japan's Nagasaki and destroy half of Kyiv.
    We visited the Museum of Strategic Missile Forces. It's unique exhibition is located on the territory of the former combat position of the missile
    regiment of the 46th Missile Division of the Strategic Missile Forces.
    During the Cold War, the military was on guard, and on command could launch the such number of ballistic missiles that could ultimately destroy the United States.
    Today, veterans are tour guides here. They used to serve with Russians. And now say they could never have imagined that history would turn out so that Russia would become Ukraine's enemy and the United States an ally.
    We visited with them the former missile silo. We asked what nuclear threats Russia poses to Ukraine, how dangerous the most powerful Satan missile, which was once produced in Ukraine and is still in service in Russia, is dangerous to the world, and why Ukraine lost its nuclear arsenal.

    That was a blast from the past and it gave me shivers. It is a great piece of reporting and an interesting view from what was at that time the "Russian" side. I grew up under the threat of nuclear annihilation. I remember years later seeing film footage that showed how many safeguards were in place but that wasn't particularly reassuring. I was 3 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and I remember seeing my parents terrified for the first time in my life and I didn't understand why they were glued to the TV every night. I and my older brother by 2 years sensed it was something bad but no one would tell us they just said it was for adults to worry about. I noticed how quiet my Mother was during the day I think it was because my Dad went to work as usual and she was upset that they might not be together when the end came. She had the TV on all day and that was unusual because my Mother seldom if ever turned the TV on during the day. When my Dad came home they would hug, we'd eat supper in silence and then they would watch the news. I didn't know what was happening and my brother and I played quietly as my Mom called family in Canada during the day and cried when she called my Grandmother and Grandfather. She wanted to go to Canada to put as much distance between us and the large Air Force Base across the lake but my Father said it wouldn't make a difference. The tension seemed to us as children to last forever but it was in fact only 13 days. When I was 5 I went to school and we had drills at specified times when the siren above the Fire Station went off and we were instructed to hide under our desks. The whole thing felt so surreal. I'm in my 60's now and seeing this video reminds me how close Russia and the US came to destroying the world because Russia wanted to put Nuclear Missile Silos in Cuba in response to our failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. Hearing Putin casually talk about using nukes makes me angry, and I think those of us in my generation have a better sense of what Putin is threatening because we lived with it until the collapse of the USSR.

    • @joket4445
      @joket4445 Рік тому +7

      You write Russia, but it was not Russia but the USSR, an eternal mistake. The USSR placed missiles in Cuba not because of the US invasion of Cuba, the reason was the deployment of American Jupiter missiles in Turkey. Much closer to Russia than Cuba is to the US. And at that time, the US had 10 times more nuclear weapons than the USSR. The Caribbean crisis was not an attack by the USSR - it was an action to protect against the overwhelming power of NATO-USA.

    • @lmcsquaredgreendale3223
      @lmcsquaredgreendale3223 Рік тому

      @@joket4445 In the 60's, 70's, 80's we used the vernacular Russia because saying USSR was ridicules because the USSR said all of their citizens were Russian. Yes they wanted the Jupiter missiles out of Turkey but even after the we reached an accord with the USSR and a nuclear war was off the table we didn't remove the Jupiter missiles until April the following year if I remember correctly and there were no repercussions from Russia/USSR.

      Have you lived to the age of 60 without knowing who really poses a threat to humanity? Only the greed and ambitions of the United States make countries have weapons. The United States has unleashed the most wars on the planet, it has the largest military budget. Only Putin can stop this hegemon, otherwise the whole world would become a vassal of the United States. You will have to answer for everything, for murders, for the overthrow of objectionable governments. And also to pay a huge debt to the whole world.

      @@newlife5024 You are severely under-educated. As a historian I have traced PTSD symptoms from war all the way back to the Vikings. Perhaps you don't realize that the US didn't exist when the Vikings were robbing and pillaging peaceful farmers in what is now Scotland and along the coast of Great Britain. I don't disagree that the US has gone to war far too often and for the wrong reasons but to claim that it is the sole country responsible for all the world's wars is childish, fantastical thinking. Man has been going to war since the beginning of time. If you are referring the nuclear weapons perhaps you need to do some research. The Nazis had a nuclear program but the one thing they lacked is called "heavy water" and although I have no idea what it is used for it is or was essential in making a nuclear weapon. During WW2 the Germans invaded Finland and Norway and there was a plant in Norway that made heavy water and if you don't like reading books you can watch a movie simply called Heavy Water and you will learn that the only reason that the US was able to beat the Nazis in the race to a nuclear weapon is because a courageous group of Norwegians and Brits managed to infiltrate this highly defended plant and bombed the only plant capable of making heavy water in Europe. I am well aware of the number of wars the US has waged but you need to either grow up a lot or educate yourself before you make such childish and asinine comments that the US is the only country responsible for all the wars in the world. Go to college, get a brain or shut the fu*k up.

    I was brought up in Northern England in the 60's and 70's. There was an airbase near us and every day I'd see vulcan bombers circling over our house, perpetually on alert, waiting to respond to any missile attack. Those were frightening times, and I am absolutely dedicated to the idea that such times should not be allowed to return, just because of one insane megalomaniac.

    Good for people to see this. most people just think it's a big explosion but don't consider the scale of suffering among the injured, and how many injured there would be. Hospitals were overwhelmed by covid patients, just imagine how much help there would be if all the hospitals were destroyed and the health workers gone, and you had thousands of people with injuries shown here, and no painkillers either. Plus, the bombs now are 50x-100x as powerful as those first two. (Whoever wrote the script for this video didn't do the math right. "Battlefield" nukes may be only 5x as powerful as the Nagasaki bomb, but "strategic" nukes are much much more powerful.)

    Great story, very well presented. What a fine gentleman your guide was. At 74, I grew up under the threat of nuclear war. During the Cuban missile crisis, my father, a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve, was called up and was in lockdown at the local AFB> We did not see him for almost a week, when the crisis was diffused. We would go through futile drills at school, diving under desks when the siren came on. I remember well, being at recess and seeing a jetliner at high altitude, and wondering, is it going to drop the bomb. That is the way it was. It would be nice if such weapons did not exist, as there will always be the crazy, power hungry Putin's around. Eight billion people on earth and all it takes is one asshole, like Putin, to bring it all to an end. It is crazy to think, where could we be as a society, if we did not have to spend trillions of dollars on military defense. There would be no hunger, no homeless, no poor.

      What a ridiculous comment, given that it was the United States that started the nuclear race, it was the United States that used nuclear weapons against people, and against the civilian population.
      And the reason for the Cuban crisis was the deployment of American Jupiter missiles in Turkey. Much closer to Russia than Cuba is to the US. And at that time, the US had 10 times more nuclear weapons than the USSR.
      NATO surrounded Russia with military bases from all sides and do you think that Russia is a threat? Russia's military budget is 20 times smaller than that of NATO - think again who threatens whom. And the US is still spending unimaginable money on weapons - in fact, being bankrupt and indebted to the whole world in the amount of 30 TRILLION dollars!!!

      @@joket4445 "and do you think that Russia is a threat?" Um.....Yea....(see Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, and of course Ukraine the second-largest nation in Europe) The shooting down of civilian airlines doesn't do much for a nation's image either. The comment regarding who invented used nukes is disingenuous as well. Russia was on the verge of nukes itself. The question as to the need/reason to use nukes to end WWII has been debated for decades with no clear answer. That being said, the price for a surprise attack on a nation can have dire consequences if you ultimately lose the war you started....pay attention Russia.

      "Most" missiles were not produced in Ukraine, but in fact in the USSR - this was done by thousands of defense plants throughout the USSR. Today, Ukraine has lost all competencies in the production of missiles, while Russia continues production.
      Do you really believe that if Ukraine stopped servicing the missiles, the Russians can't service those missiles on their own? Just because an old museum watchman told you? ))) Moreover, almost all Ukrainian missile specialists have long since left for Russia, North Korea or China, because they have not received their meager salaries for years.

Don’t know only going by the former launch guys comments, but who knows? Maybe the Chinese and north Korean rocket scientists have been doing it considering they stole as much technical knowledge they could from the US. Yea kinda of hard to produce any new missiles in the region the Russians invaded in 2014, has to be a reason Russia wants it back so bad besides common language, could it be because the tanks, icbms, other industrial equipment and natural resources are there? I personally think it’s the petroleum and rare metals that Russia wants, but again I really don’t care what Russia wants, I have no desire to even visit Russia now or spend another dime on its products. @@gomergomez1984 All missile factories in Ukraine are and have always been on the territory controlled by Kyiv, the Yuzhmash plant, for example, is the giant of the rocket industry of the USSR.
      Russia did not interfere with the development of Ukrainian industry in any way, Ukraine independently destroyed everything from the first day of its independence - aircraft building, rocket building, automotive engineering, although at the first stage the Ukrainian economy was equal to France. All this was destroyed long before 2014.
      Assistance to the unrecognized republics of the DPR and LPR from Russia has nothing to do with minerals. Russia has everything it needs and does not depend on Ukraine in any way, rather, on the territory of Ukraine, there have long been no technologies and factories that Moscow needs.
      The only reason for the conflict is the protection of the pro-Russian rebels and the resistance to the approach and pressure of NATO.
