    Look at the FIRST STEP . Conceptually the magnitude of Force CD compared to the Magnitude of Force BC favors Fore CD in the Y direction. Just by looking there is no way that Force BC is greater than Force CD with respect to the Y components. I solved this using trigonometry and solving for each X and y components. My answer was 2860 LBS. Don't short cut the math, something is wrong here. :')

    Correct answer is D, you lost numbers when rounding up

    Without approximating the hypotenuse for the ratios for Fx & Fy components I ended up with exactly (10/7) tons, which is about 2857.1 pounds.

      +Ralajer ... yep, 2 decimals is not a good approach for trig-type problems ... i solved this again considering more decimals and my answer is D. (Force B = 1.429 x 2000 = 2858 lbf)

      exactly..use the trig

    I think the fact that you solved for the hypotenuse instead of leaving them in the square root form when entering the calculations rounded your numbers down. If you leave your numbers in the square root forms you will get D as the answer.

    I calculated 2857.91 lbs, closest to answer D.

    Yes. I think the correct answer is Do too.

    I calculated 1.43 tons. 1.43 tons = 2860 lb, which is d). I think the answers offered are too close in value. If you were to calculate 1.42 tons, which is only .01 tons off, you would have gotten c) 2840 lb. Answers c) and d) are only off by .01 tons, so you can calculate the problem correctly, but because of rounding numbers, you can pick the "wrong" answer.

    If you convert tons to pounds at the beginning and use pounds through all of the sum of forces equations, you get answer D.

    but the triangles are only to find the angle not length?

    • @cullum24
      @cullum24 9 років тому +2

      +paviaaPS3 Not even to find the angle, but to use them as a ratio to find your component forces, which takes much less time than finding the angle then using sine and cosine to find the exact same thing.

    B = 1.42 Tons. That's right. However, 1 US ton = 2000 lbs. Thus, 1.42 tons * 2000 lbs/tons = 2857 lbs. ~ 2860 lbs. is the right answer.
