    When I first started my loc journey the lady that did my hair would always lug a full blown hair dryer over and insist I sat under it for 45 minutes. (I had little teeny pigtails) she also wanted a retwist done every 6 to 8 weeks. After buying a dryer and maintaining my own locs for going on 2 years. I never use the dryer, retwist like every 3 months or so and narrowed the products that work well from about 25 to probably 6 or 7. Edge control on rare occasions. My hair is healthy and growing like a weed.

    It’s #2 for me! My locs look exactly like yours on the ends! I also have no intention or coloring my locs. I did it 4 times in the past. Been loc’d for 8 yrs. Last color I did was 2018. My ends constantly been breaking the past 2 years. Also my bleach/color were done by a loctician. I call my ends breaking a pruning stage. I also agree with #1 the over manipulation. I definitely try not to do too many styles that pull or cause tension. Thank you so much for this video!

    To avoid mold in locs, shampoo with an anti-bacteria, anti-fungal shampoo, especially if washing frequently.

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  Рік тому +2

      That won't completely avoid it. If the hair is damp, the fungus can grow in spite of antifungal and antibacterial agents in the products. The most important thing is to make sure the hair dries thoroughly.

    • @rozchristopherson648
      @rozchristopherson648 Рік тому

      @@HeitCheri Yes, I know hair can't remain damp. But I am saying that in addition to drying the hair properly, antifungal shampoos do help inhibit mold. A good soaking of the hair in strong vokda (maybe once a year) followed by rinsing in water also helps prevent mold but one must add moisture to the hair to prevent any dryness caused by the vodka.

    Thank you for sharing these tips! I used to have locs. I intend to restart them next year. For now, I'm doing my research about how to start them with a strong base and how to render them as healthy as possible as they grow & develop.
    Over this past year since I cut them off, I've focused on the health of my scalp. One thing that I learned is that any scalp issues you might have should be thoroughly dealt with prior to starting (or restarting) locs.

    Hi Cheri! Thank you so much for this information. I know that is not recommended, however, the idea of allowing just anyone to touch my hair is very concerning. You don't always know what type of energy is being intermingled with the hair when seeking professional counsel. Additionally, there are a number of people that go to the "professionals" and have uncouth practices unleashed on their hair. That said, how attached were you to a specific "grid" when you first did your locs? Did you have someone to help you maintain straight parts or was that a non-factor? Finally, what were some of the practices that you employed on your baby locks while developing to mature locs? Any advice for newbies looking to care for their own hair? Many, many thanks to you in advance!🤍🍃🌺

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  2 роки тому +4

      Hey Closing the Divide! Thanks so much for your comment and watching the video.
      I started my locs myself and I have always maintained my locs myself. I've only had two stylists work on my hair, and it was for color. The first was a disaster and then my husband's niece came and corrected the color and did an amazing job.
      I feel like my hair is my creation, my experiment, something that is the product of my own hands. I'm happy with the results and I don't want other hands in my hair.
      In terms of the grid, my sections are no longer completely even because I have combined locs here and there... Some boxes are bigger than others. I'm cool with it because I prefer not to see parts and scalp in the styles I wear. It's rare that anyone sees more than my grid around the perimeter.
      Hope this helps. You may also find the discussion in my loc Q & A video helpful as well. 🙂

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  Рік тому +1

      While that may be true, it's a bit different when you're talking about locs because, depending on the length of the hair, there is a large amount of dead hair that's no longer connected to the root. Also, the illusion of growth must be considered, for example like when the locs drop after they reach a certain length. Thanks for your comment!

      Thanks for the question Phoenix! Best practice is to wear a scarf or bonnet that will keep your hair from snagging and from getting lint in it.

    Wait I see so many ppl say not to air dry

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment. If you air dry, you need to be sure that it can dry completely and thoroughly. If the hair is left wet, mold and mildew can occur. The reason I don't prefer dryers is because it's my preference not to use heat on my hair. Remember, locs are hair that you'll have for a long time if you let them grow, so I try to avoid any potential heat damage.
      I suppose cool drying would be fine, but most people don't dry their hair with cool air because it would take longer... Especially for locs. Hope this helps!

    It's okay to steam the locs right???

      Hey Deedee! Steaming locs in the shower or with indirect steam is fine. I personally wouldn't use a steaming device (like what people use for steaming clothes or to steam your face) on my locs.
      If you steam your hair, be sure that it has good airflow to all the locs after so that it will dry completely.
      Thanks for your question!

      @@HeitCheri Hi. Thanks for your reply. I currently use a hooded streamer similar to that of a salon 🙂

      I've never used a hooded steamer. How do you like it? How often do you steam? Without knowing much about the steamer, if it's made for hair already and the heat is t super high, I don't see an issue with occasional use. ☺️

    Air dry caused mold

      This is not true if you let your locs dry thoroughly. It all depends on your specific circumstances. Not letting your hair dry thoroughly is what can cause mild and mildew to form in the locs.
