We unpack the pressures from higher-level practitioners and how they can dampen training enthusiasm. In this episode, we delve into the unique challenges faced by women in jiu-jitsu, especially in smaller gyms, and the efforts to build a supportive environment for female practitioners. The conversation draws poignant parallels between leaving a gym and experiencing a breakup, underscoring the critical importance of finding a training space that aligns with one’s personal values and goals.
Finally, we tackle the mental and emotional aspects of the jiu-jitsu journey. From adapting to different training systems to dealing with gym politics and ego, we lay it all on the table. We share personal experiences about the significance of fundamentals, the benefits of taking time off for a mental reset, and the evolving landscape of content creation in jiu-jitsu. Embracing vulnerability and maintaining a beginner's mindset are highlighted as vital for personal growth. By openly sharing our journeys, we aim to inspire others and build a more supportive, growth-oriented community.

One of the best convos I’ve heard about BJJ. I actually had the exact same experience as Raelene with a difficult transition to a gym at blue belt that I knew deep down was going to be better for me in the long term but the teething pains were often difficult. Thank you ✨

Freya! Thank you. I hope those teething pains have run their course and you’re enjoying the sport again ❤️

I can totally relate to her comments about dela riva guard and gyms... the gatekeeping in gyms drives me crazy.

Hearing this, I am so grateful to train at a small club where the owner/head coach teaches us fun shit like crucifix, De la Riva, butterfly guard, X guard from white belt on. Makes it more interesting.

I thought all of this was just standard for white belts

@@enrapturedgoose5317 definitely not the standard everywhere and depends on the school. The school I started out at was based on a branch of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu curriculum so it was more ‘self defence fundamentals’ based, which is why x guard and DLR for example weren’t really taught or ‘needed’ in the classroom

That raises maybe an interesting question - should getting to blue belt just be knowing/memorizing more advanced techniques or should it be more about becoming more advanced in the fundamentals?
It also brings up that distinction again between martial arts vs martial sports. She is definitely more interested in the sport aspect.

I’m still exploring this balance as a blue belt, but it’s feeling like it’s a combination of both 🤗

THAT part where she's said: hey I'm doing this for fun and you're telling me not to do this, etc, etc. I would love her to expand on that mindset. Many times, as a seasoned, I LOVE TO WORK MY CRAFT INSIDE THE GUARD. I've been accustom to be successful inside guards, and even managed to sub the guard who keeps in trapped in his shallow guard, but I keep earing instructors, dont stay in the guard, you cant sub him, you're in his guard.
My mind yells and creams, I'm in love with this inside intricacies grappling game, let me have my way, stop telling me what you want from me and please let me enjoy, please ?

I mean fine if you are only doing it for fun but you should listen to those with more skill than you

@@Day-vg1bh O and of course, and I mean no offense to my best beloved instructor. I honor him, but I like a few instructors told me, when you have tried to open his guard to no avail, and nothing is working, then yes go to work your craft inside his guard, and make it work.
But my actual instructor don't see eye to eye on this one, he believes I should spend an entire round trying to open the guard, while other instructors disagree with him. Let him grind it inside the guard since he's successful.
