    Great stuff. One noteworthy detail that didn't get mentioned was how the shot at 14:19-14:20 has the character raising his arms in sync with the riser (the build-up sound). It's basically the same logic as the Batman ascending bit. Great editors have the synesthetic skill of matching not just beats, but also the 'feel' of the music with appropriate actions. A bit like dancers!

    Now I’m a bit of a lens nerd and I can tell you with very great confidence that that flare was not added it post. It might have been caused by a larger light source that was shone into the lens from out of frame below. But it could very well have been created by the little flash light. I can’t tell for certain until I’ve studied these lenses they’re using which I can’t do yet, because they’re new anamorphic lenses by Arri which haven’t even been announced yet.

    • @FilmmakerIQ
      @FilmmakerIQ  4 роки тому

      Yeah I didn't know if it was faked or not but it would be an easy thing to add.

    • @VariTimo
      @VariTimo 4 роки тому

      The horizontal anamorphic flare is quite easy to add but that bright blooming before I think you were referring to, not so much. That’s more than just adding a 2D effect and if done poorly can look off putting. These kind of light bouncing around in the lens flares are almost always practical. Especially when we talk about super high end DPs like Greig Fraser.

    • @FilmmakerIQ
      @FilmmakerIQ  4 роки тому

      I think you could pull it off easily overlaying some recorded lens flare footage over the shot. It happens so quickly anyways. You'll get all the lens characters and it's easy to hide because the flare is motivated.
      I'm not saying that's bad, also not saying that's what they did. But it is possible.

    • @VariTimo
      @VariTimo 4 роки тому +1

    loved this video. One of my fav's so far. I will be noticing the timing of the beats in other films now. I wonder how the timing of the beats really change. I'm sure there is a formula. For example. What sort of feeling do we get placing the hits before the beat versus after the beat of the visual. I wonder.. hmmm.

  • @RavikantRai21490
    @RavikantRai21490 4 роки тому

    Would love to see more such videos, John. Love your channel. I now understand cutting ahead of a beat but what I am still unable to put my finger on is 'Cutting on action', or the specific idea of it. Walter Murch mentioned I think action that is happening in the sense of the actors doing things or someone about to do something (sorry if I am remembering this totally wrong). In your video here, I also got the impression that 'action' could mean anything that is happening (a flashlight turning on) and not necessarily just human action. So does that mean I cut on action meaning anything including non-human action on screen?

    • @FilmmakerIQ
      @FilmmakerIQ  4 роки тому +1

    I've watched this trailer so many times and this video too. I also enjoy the camera flashbulb charge after the line "any of this mean anything to you?" as you mention in this video, which leads up to the hit and the cut. That exact sound effect used in that trailer is from Ryan Wassil, soundsnap dot com/search/audio/camera%20flashbulb%20warming%20up/score
    Because I was wondering if they EQ'd the sound to achieve that cause it sounds so different from your typical camera flash whine FX and so super high quality. But nope, it's used as it was.

  • @JimRobinson-colors
    @JimRobinson-colors 4 роки тому +1

    Slightly off topic question - I know there are tons of software choices for downloading video from youTube or Vimeo etc. Was wondering which software that you used here? Quality looks really good.
    Also, you show the Batman latency with vimeo and youTube from I believe different sources. Did you test your outcome of the 57 ms with your own test footage? Seems to me there are a lot of variables in uploading i.e. codec. bit rate etc. was wondering if your findings are accurate with a more controlled test of the variables. Quite a series you have going here.
    I mentioned on the first one that I used to be a musician and doing commercial studio work had many producers suggest playing ahead of the beat for energy ( lively pop feels ) and behind the beat for emotional songs ( ballads , blues etc. ) - seems to me a lot of decisions in editing could be for similar reasons. And in this the pounding of the punch - showing the impact - ( like a drummer hitting a drum ) the swing of the arm is the part that sells the audio impact.
    Really cool ideas here and analysis. Haven't quite seen this approach on youTube tuts- love it.

    • @FilmmakerIQ

      I used Internet Download Manager.
      My own experiments indicate that YT adds about 46ms, Premiere itself would add about 13ms when encoding to H.264. I imagine the original cut was rendered in a pro codec with no delay, a cut made without the MPA logo added some delay and then YT added some more after that.
      But I'm not going on a firm number on what the delay is... I don't really understand what UA-cam is doing enough to say for sure.

    • @JohnDlugosz
      @JohnDlugosz 4 роки тому

      @@FilmmakerIQ UA-cam now feeds audio and video separately and combines them in the player. Or in the case of the downloader, by the software that writes a standard codec.

    • @FilmmakerIQ
      @FilmmakerIQ  4 роки тому

      I don't think the downloader is encoding anything. It may be being done on the player... But it also exists when downloading from the Creator Studio outside a player. Again, I don't know precisely how this is introduced, only that everything I see is demonstrating that it is. Also not the same level on a site like Vimeo
      Here's a recent upload/reupload experiment and the audio delay introduced by each successive upload is in line with 1 frame of delay. ua-cam.com/video/JR4KHfqw-oE/v-deo.html

    Please post a link to the correct trailer - there are a lot of hits on "The Batman trailer" on Vimeo. I am not a super fan, so are confused about what iteration we are in now, like with the Spiderman, where there are two like, universes out there. Same as with the new iterations of "Star Trek", conveniently, happeing in new timelines, I believe this ruins the whole thing, and just confuses the public, like with all those Marvel movies, where you have to be an expert and super nerd, to follow the timeline. And oddly enough, this started already with Star Wars, at episode IV-VI, then they made I-III, then
    VII-IX, then a lot of spin-off, animations etc. All the making of "prequels" in addition to sequels, is also messing things up, a bit.
    All this mess ruins everything, we want (mostly) clean timelines, of course some exceptions are allowed, however, different variants by different studios, just confuse the causal viewers, and probably irritates fans who like things to be "canon", too.
    I am no saying that you never should go back in time, in a series, however it should be done with care, because sooner or later, the public will loose track of everything, thus the interest in the series.

    • @FilmmakerIQ
      @FilmmakerIQ  4 роки тому

      Just Google "Matt Reeves Vimeo The Batman Trailer"
      Batman doesn't exist in a continuum universe like Star Trek. There's no connection between Adam West Batman and Nolan's Dark Knight. Instead everything is a play on central themes and concepts. Bruce Wayne is closer to James Bond or Sherlock Holmes or even King Arthur who has a common origin story but from which any number of possible stories can be told.
