    As others have said, these LNAs don't support passive passthrough - when the power is off, it blocks the signal. You can't compare reception with and without power, you have to physically disconnect the LNA from the antenna path. Some (much) more expensive LNAs do support passive passthrough using coaxial relays.

    You can normally power these with a BIAS-T on your SDR along the coax. You also want the LNA to be as close to the antenna as possible.

      I'm so pleased with the performance I will definitely be moving this to the masthead.

      So does it mean I just plug the LNA and does it need another device to get the power from the coax?

      Depends on a few things- can your SDR/ device provide power directly through it's connections... is it enough ....3.3v? 5v? Those are common figures- but some amps will require >12v+...in which case either another item needs to be incorporated into your line called a bias which provides a DC power supply to the line amongst possibly other functions ....take care with such setups...you dont wanna burn your sdr or amp@@alphaadhito

    • @eswnl1
      @eswnl1 5 місяців тому

      You need a seperate bias tee to do this.

    When you trun off amp
    You should remove connectors from lna to antanna and sdr
    And connect anteena connector directly to the sdr..and now see the result

      turn off AGCs, manually tune the gain till you start to lose signal

    careful I found some of those to have fake parts resulting in a higher noise figure in the 2-3 db range. If you buy a pre-amp buy the ones marked 0.6db and are in machined aluminum cases. They are about 2-3 times the cost than those cheap ones but I have not yet found one with a fake or bad chip. Out of 10 bought all had .45-.6db noise at 1 ghz ,whereas of 10 of the cheap ones 4 were good the rest were terrible.

      Pritty much all the cheap ones have problems . Fortunately for the most part they are good enough for applications like this !

    I have a question iwant to buy lna module there is some types like 20db gain I know If I put 50mv pp in input I will have a 500mv output but ididnt tested it for 400mv input will I have 4v pp at output on 50 ohm load If not why???

    How did you turn the amp on and off? Did you remove the amp when you turned it off? With no power on the amp I doubt much signal can pass through the amp.

      If your using a RL-SDR V3 it has a bias tee you can utilize that actually turns the LNA on and off.

    So I thought i had a grip on the ins & outs of the workings of these- I have a Open Source SDR amp that came with my HackRF....being cautious as to not blow the HackRF's inners i went to test out the gain....In your vid there's a visible difference...mine? Nothing like that... i swear that it did at a time-- but never measured it like this....
    Just saw results like your's receiving all those craft when the amp had been turned on..
    I especially wanted to get things right since I was working on a TX 'ing idea where I needed to daisy chain another amp- and unfortunately, only 2nd'ary amp i got is one that came with EMC test probes- i am under the impression the "in" (rx) and "out" (tx) are reversed- againn, my attempts at figuring out have been futile/ i don't want to be setting up a situation where 1 amp is tx'ing and the 2nd amp rx'ing.
    .... Any suggestions on how to determine this? Tools to use to do so? Power-meter? Oscilloscope? I guess a spectrum analyzer eh?
    Also, you use the amp for ADSB- well, at least demonstrated its handy work boosting the results of how many craft were around... in that setup which way are you amplifying the signal? Are you flipping it to boost rec'd signals? Or stays same where your are amplifying your TX?
    Thanks in advance.
    oh the amp and emc probes are:
    (actually really nice probes but the amp requires a plug power jack with >12v) www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005923571278.html

    You should go for some filters immediately after the LNA (which should be first after the antenna since it governs the whole system's noise performance as Friis formulas for noise predicts). I'd opt in for filtering since you're receiver has no preselection at all. All signals, even if outside the theoretical receiving frequency will have negative impact on the receiver performance (signal to interference ratio) by producing intermodulation or saturating your receiver (no matter which frequency you dial in). That is especially true for cellular and WiFi services which are by far generated most near to your receiver and thus the most powerful ones. Filters will help to keep those strong signals away from your receiver so they won't do so much harm (degrade your receiver performance).

    Do you have videos on how to install these other softwares, like for example the NOAA Sat and ADSB. Basically a video tutorial on how to do this. I am really intrigued about this.
    I own the RTL-SDR v3 and in another few months im going to get another one. And I have AirSPY SDR and other SDR versions of it. I also just purchased 2 of those amplifiers.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow  2 роки тому +1

      I don't, primarily because I don't have the patience to document all the trial and error and secondly because they are usually quite painful to edit - though I wish I did now as I also would have to learn this all again just to install it.
      If I recall I used some readily available resources on the web and a chunk of experimentation.
      It is fascinating, but a shame you need so many random applications and processes to get it to work 😂

  • @DubiousEngineering
    @DubiousEngineering 4 роки тому

    Get it outside as close as possible to the antenna and on a short a cable as possible ... then it is less likely to amplify induced noise as well as signal. Buy an RSP1A from SDR Play. Well worth the money. Much better and lower signal to noise ratio than the others ... 73 DE M0XXX

      He mentioned Diskcone, which is great for areas around you. It has a horizontal doughnut shaped lobe, not great for satellites above you.
      There are many alternatives ie yagis printed on a pcb. It also helps to know the satellites polarization - can be horizontal, vertical, left or right handed circular (antenna is helix on a reflector)!
