You are so fortunate to work in such a peaceful place. KARL is really taking shape. Looking spiffy with his new paint and rigging. Thank you for sharing.
+WhiteSpotPirates Fantastic, feel free to use the word "spiffy" anytime. Hope all is good for you and Karl. Enjoy watching your videos. They're some of the best on the planet.
Thx, Scott. I am lucky to have such a great editor :) All is good, Karl and me are swinging on a free mooring in Gran Cayman...having some small engine issues, but I think I have it figured out...Fingers crossed :) Ahoy, Nike & Karl
just caught up on your journey. saw your latest vlog and then went all the way back to the beginning. watched quite a few of the episodes and enjoyed them all. the old adage "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" certainly applies to you. love your honesty and your focus on the boat and sailing experience. saw some criticism in the comment section, my recommendation is don't change any part of your content, you're the artist and the captain of the ship, its your call what and when to change any of it ( the music is fine and i am actually quite fond of the sign off). the transformation of SV Karl has been amazing!!! look forward to your weekly updates - signed new subscriber.
Having spent most of the winter snatching time here and there to work on my 1978 Columbia I envy your ability to focus your efforts on Karl. Thank you for the inspiration to get the work done ourselves.
You are already giving a good deal back! And one of the nice things about sailing is there is always something to learn. After awhile though, you realize you know enough to teach certain things.....
Just so much more interesting than seeing people just sailing about. The real nuts and bolts of sailing. All credit to you for your persistence with Karl.
If i ever end up being so fortunate to travel on my boat to the caribbian ill make a special point to go to Tom´s place for some service. He looks like such a top notch bloke
You don't seem phased by any job. Just roll up your sleeves and get to it, when most mere mortals would not know where to start. Hope the rest of the work goes smoothly and you can set sail once again. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Niki, and KARL too. It has taken me a few days to get back to where I can access the internet. WOW, KARL is looking like a man of the sea again. I can't wait to see a full screen shot of him, so we can see him in his Sunday Best. You can sure have confidence in that rig now. I hope you have all those engine glitches worked out that you suffered with during the first year working on KARL. I look forward to your weekly visits to my home. See you next week. OH and next week, I'm fixing steaks on the Barbie... so bring your appetite. :-)
Looking good! I noticed that like most people you were using a pin/screwdriver through the turnbuckles to tighten/loosen them. I was told by my mentor that you should use a couple of wrenches. (e.g. one to hold the wire on the shroud and the other on the turnbuckle) The turnbuckle apparently aren't really designed for the stress when using a screwdriver and can result in cracks forming. It also helps preventing the shroud/wire from twisting as you start increasing the load.
Great video. I love your step-by-step technical explanations. You are very lucky to have a friend like Tom but I am not surprised, with the kindness you show others its very easy to see why they respond so positively and in a helpful manner.
You must be a very nice person, everywhere you go you land on your feet. Really enjoy when you get stuck in with the jobs on Karl. I'm sure you look back after your jobs are done and pat your self on the back. Another great video :)
Nike, Great episode! Never fun to be on the hard but it's impressive how much you have accomplished on & off the water. Karl is looking like a million bucks. Love the loft setting / workshop! Glad things are going so well for you. Hopefully soon you can hoist the sails and test out the new rigging.
Karl got a new coat! Looks good. That primer color reminds me of zinc chromate, the same stuff the US military have used for 80 years or more to protect aircraft aluminum from corrosion
Free tie up ... great. One of the reasons most conscientious sailors do their hull and deck maintenance on the hard, with a tarp under the boat, is to prevent all the toxic chemicals in the paint and the pieces of aluminum from entering the water.
Hi +Mark Pentilescu, yes, you are right, that was not such a clever idea. I have not seen any tarps underneath boats around here anywhere, though... Some places do it, when they sandblast, but not even that all the time. But not saying it makes it any better just because others around here don't do it either. I did collect all the "bigger" parts by hand so they did not land in the water, but the dust did fly around, that's true...I guess the sander could have a collector bag attached to prevent that a bit more. But how are you going to do that with the grinder? Any good idea? Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Nice view from your office, here is a trick to save you money the next time karl needs a spruce up, paint one coat of paint on the deck & then streight away put some dry fresh water river sandsharp sand down, give it a few hours then put another coat on & now you have great anti- slip deck paint, iv tested it out up to force 11 gale in the N,sea great griping property. & it stays on for years & years & its half the price than your expensive anti- slip deck paint. but by the time you read this, you prob would of done your deck by now, but if there was ever a nxt time?, that guy is great letting you use his dock for free what a Boost that will save you lots, good job on the rigging also. ;)
Hi Bruce, well, I would consider myself still as a learner in most areas :) there is just too much stuff out there that u need to know about sailboats! But step by step, hey? But I hope that one day I can give some of the knowledge back for sure! Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Your video skills keep improving. Nice video…loved to see the locals and how someone else lives. Thank you for taking the time out of your hard working day to video.
I was thinking that you could attach a line to the top of the mast and run it down to the base. Place it under some tension and you now have a reference straight edge to compare to the mast while adjusting the rigging.
I now its years later but you will have to do this again. You can assure the mast is straight with a plum bob. A weight on a string hung from the top of the mast will hang perfectly straight. weight will negate the wind. Cheers!!!!!
Great progress! Good to see the green coat on. You have some serious pits in the Al. That seal should help a little. Didn't go with continuous shrouds? I have the same decision to make. I'll follow your example. Too much to change rigging design.
Metal boats (mine was steel) require a little more care and attention, but the added strength and security makes the effort well worth it especially cruising in the high latitudes. "Sometimes I just dream of the ocean, God I wish I was cruising again" - Jimmy Buffett.
Karl is looking really good. Maybe in the next video you can post a picture of Karl when you first met him and what it looks like after all this work. Was that clothing line No and Yo?
U can check out their stuff at www.noandyo.com :) oh, I have looked at old puctures recently and I was like "whaaaat". Kinda funny how quixkly u forget...;) Ahoy, Nike & Karl
+WhiteSpotPirates Nike I looked at a few of the old videos and you have come a very long way. It really is shocking. It is a small world since a friend has a shop where he stores his race car and went to visit him last week and ended up seeing some thing about no and yo. My buddies shop is the next row of the business park. Take care and have fun.
nike be carefull swimming around marinas, there can be stray voltage in the water from improperly grounded boat,it can be deadly.so happy yur getting karl spruced up.
Respirators or dust masks can be awkward and cumbersome to work in sometimes and nobody can understand you when speaking, but it beats the alternative. That stuff has super toxic fumes and the sanding dust is also bad to breathe. To your health! Karl looks Great! Cheers T.
Hi +joepup7777, hm, I thought I had replied to this, but maybe the message did not post...You can find info about KARL on my website whitespotpirates.com/untie-the-lines/my-boat-karl/. It uses led for ballast. Hope you find the info you are looking for, if not, let me know if you want to have further info. Ahoy, NIke & Karl
Those German meat hammers seem to hold up pretty well whilst being tested at rigging tool specifications. I feel sorry for any pirates that would even think about creeping on Karl after dark.
Very cool, thanks for sharing and if your going to sand anymore of that green primer make sure you ware a mask it looks a lot like zinckromate marine paint which contains lead. thumbs up.
Hey Neil, of course, I change my clothes about every two hours, don't you? ;) well, it did take quite a while indeed...just letting it all dry to sand it etc. and then there is rain every once in a while...i think O was some good two months on Tom's dock. And we are trying to make 3-4 episodes from it. There is so much material, but we don't want to strecht peoples' patience with the refit parts too much either. What was nice, though, was that it was painting amd rigging amd some other projects that I could jump forth and back from so it was not too monotonous. Thx for seeing all the work, though :) i have to say I was quite rpoud at the end of this marathon... Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Nope, all aluminium. But they had put some filler on it at some places to make it more smooth. I did not bother filling it back up, though, due tl time and money. Or u mean the thickness of the aluminium? Ahoy, nike & karl
Hi +ysesq, you can find some info on Karl here whitespotpirates.com/untie-the-lines/my-boat-karl/. The thickness is 5mm above the water and 8mm below, if I am not mistaken... Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Just a very interesting and amazing video series. The videography is awesome. If the sailboat looked as good as you do it wouldn’t need any repairs. Also, if you have not figured this out by now use penetrating oil on anything metal that has seized up. Let it soak for 15-30 minutes before removing. Be safe and don’t gamble with the ocean.

Thanks for letting me know, makes me happy to hear u enjoy my videos. Happy sailing to you, too!
Happiness is a state of mind, not location or material items we posses though out our life. Thanks Nike for these videos.
Very true!
You are so fortunate to work in such a peaceful place. KARL is really taking shape. Looking spiffy with his new paint and rigging. Thank you for sharing.
+Scott Hert Spiffy was the word which came to me too.
Hey +Scott Hert. love that word, did not know it before. Will steal it for the next episode if you don't mind ;)

Hey Nike, I was great to see you take a siesta in the hammock. Good thinking. You sure are one hell of a fine worker. You are indomitable ! ! !
Tom is such a damn saint! He deserves a medal for all his donated time and energy to help the ROCK Star we love, Nike!!!
Having spent most of the winter snatching time here and there to work on my 1978 Columbia I envy your ability to focus your efforts on Karl. Thank you for the inspiration to get the work done ourselves.
What's the story on your Columbia?
So cool to see Karl coming along. What a boat!

Don't see guys in shipyards working in their underwear. Must be a hot climate thing....

Karl has come so far with you! And yay new clothes. LOL I was just thinking it was about time to retire those shorts. ;)
That sure does look way better. You do great work!
Your video skills keep improving. Nice video…loved to see the locals and how someone else lives. Thank you for taking the time out of your hard working day to video.
Nice job, boat work never ends. Love your videos.
Another great video! Can't wait to see it when you are done.
Excellent progress.
Karl is looking good Niki !
And you seem to be really settling in to that lifestyle quit well and I am so happy for you ! :-)
I was thinking that you could attach a line to the top of the mast and run it down to the base. Place it under some tension and you now have a reference straight edge to compare to the mast while adjusting the rigging.
Yay, new paint and nice turnbuckles. Ha, for a sec there I though you painted your cockpit pink ;)
The green stuff is Zinc Chromate , It's about the best you can use to prep aluminum
Great work you doing there! bice to see you taking care of Karl
I now its years later but you will have to do this again. You can assure the mast is straight with a plum bob. A weight on a string hung from the top of the mast will hang perfectly straight. weight will negate the wind. Cheers!!!!!

What an awesome lady. You're so handy. Love your channel and what you are doing.
Karl is looking AMAZING! Love watching you do the work yourself. Very inspiring. As always, looking forward to the next video :) - Jennifer
looking good, I used to do a lot of fiberglass work, I was itching as I watched😊
+William Howald it´s an aluminium boat :D
Great Job and excellent perseverance Proud of you!!

You are getting to know that boat inside out. Great confidence builder out at sea.
Keep up the good work!
ahh i see why no updates , your been busy !
Love ur vids keep them coming
He sounds like a cool guy,...👍😆.

There is almost nothing I hate more then a safety Sally but, that knot on your harness almost gave me a heart attack please consider retying that ;) I really like your videos and want them to keep coming.
Ha ha I saw that. Well, as someone else pointed out, it's a good thing she's doing all this unsafe stuff while she's still young and immortal!
Nike you're gorgeous and an exceptional woman. You amaze all of us.
Great music in this vid.
I like all you videos
nice work!
I love your videos and your production of them are awesome. As a musician, I have to say that the out of tune piano music that you play over and over and over again in each and every video is slowly driving me nuts. That being said I will keep on watching.

Better out at sea, you can turn off all lights for zero light pollution but no good trying to focus a telescope on a moving boat. Ok for binoculars though.
So glad this isn't the "Karls Transformation Goes On" I thought it was going to be..
2:13 : I know that your channel is "Untie the lines" but as a rock climber, Im a little bit concerned about that knot! You schould always leave at least 10cm of rope after any knots. In rock climbing, accidents happen mostly when hanging one 1 line. +1
I have this idea that, you could produce a video for Josh, a sort of payback
Niki looks great love when your videos come in. Hopefully one day the wife and I can meet you.
wow 32,000 subscribers! nice I subsubscrib around 800. It has been nice to see how you have grown and how nice your boat is looking...it was a rotten moldy mess(
Cool hookups
rigging is tough for us mortals
Ha! Love the music!
Next time you get a sticky pin or something that's stuck. Get some WD40. It's a spray on lubricant that is useful for a 1001 jobs. It's global so u should have no problem finding it.
big thumbs up on the progress and on your work BUT next time, dont sand into the sea and dont blow your old paint into the sea...its polluted enough.
Nice work. ps, don't use your hand as a hammer. take it from a mechanic, you'll do damage after a while.
Prettiest sailor on UA-cam.
