- There’s some semblance of calm on the streets of Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, after several days of protests against a controversial job quota system.
A curfew remains in place indefinitely and a telecoms blackout continues to affect internet and mobile phone services.
Seen as a partial victory for protesters, the Supreme Court scrapped most government job quotas on Sunday.
The reinstatement of the policy in June, initially sparked the student-led protests, that have since spread elsewhere.
More than 140 people have been killed and thousands injured after a crackdown by police and the military.
Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury has more from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

For the past 4 days, Bangladesh has been completely isolated from the outside world with no internet connection. Over 400 ordinary students have been killed in the last 5 days. Now, the government has deployed the army and imposed a curfew, raising fears that thousands more students will die while the world media remains silent.
Despite so many massacres, the international community remains silent. Today, in Bangladesh, people are being shot like birds. The internet is off, yet the international community still remains silent.

Bangladeshi government never passed permission for that to be installed, and Hasina would have a remote to turn that off before even allowing it to be installed. After last Thursday 18/07/2024 9:19 PM Posts & Telecommunication Minister Palak shut down all internet services. And after 10 o'clock at night all the students were massacred. On Friday 19/07/2024 civilians were injured and killed by helicopter gunfire throughout the day. I myself went out to market for shelter but I was also hit by the bullets and bombs from the helicopter and I was injured and lay in bed for three days 🥲🥲. The situation in Bangladesh is far from calm right now. Hasina deployed the army, police and even border guards in every inch of the country and employed curfew after murdering thousands of innocent students. Even the student wing of the ruling party has been deployed to viciously attack protestors. The internet and all kind of mobile network has been shut down to stop communication among people and stop us from posting about this heinous situation and reaching out for international help. In reality, more than 1200 protestors has been confirmed murdered, almost 20,000 injured or missing and hundreds are being arrested under false warrents with no evidence. THERE IS NO JUDICIAL SYSTEM OR FREEDOM OF PRESS IN BANGLADESH. Hearing Hasina promise that justice will be served against the killings of innocents is tragically hilarious. How on earth can we expect the same dictator who orchrested these murders and attacks to investigate them? We do not want a quota reform anymore. Our only demand is STEP DOWN DICTATOR.
