When they wrote this music, the album was the medium for presenting it to their fans. The music had to fit within the constraints imposed by that medium. For example, the working title of another song on the same album, New World Man, was “Project 3:57” because that was how much physical space was left on the vinyl. They wrote and recorded it in a single day and it became the 8th and final track on Signals. Arguably, musicians who had grown up during the album era stayed true to the notion of releasing music as a cohesive group of songs, even after they didn’t have to anymore (i.e. when digital distribution channels removed the space constraints of the album). Rush, in addition, was the quintessential album band. They never had a top ten single, but all 18 (plus 1) of their studio albums and all of their live material charted. Ironically, their best-charting single was New World Man, which hit number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. Given all of the above, I think listening to the entire album, in the order as originally recorded, is the only way to go. If that makes for videos that are too long, just complete the review in segments. Many of the reactors who have taken on the (daunting) task of reacting to Rush’s entire studio discography have just done it one song per video at a time.
in the song rush- free will ull find the best instrumental part ever made in music history. So complex and special that you have to hear it several times to really begin to understand and appreciate it
You can really hear the influence of the Police on this song. Especially the reggae-ish elements. A great song with a great vibe. Keep doing RUSH. A couple of other reactors did the entire catalog and it took them the better part of a year, so numerous are the recordings, videos and live performances.
Happy birthday Geddy!! It was also on this day back in 1974 when Neil officially joined Rush (great birthday present, eh?), and I can think of no better way to celebrate this momentous day than by playing more of their music. I'd like to recommend continuing with the Fear Trilogy; you've already heard Part 3: Witch Hunt from Moving Pictures; Part 2: The Weapon is on Signals; Part 1: The Enemy Within is on Grace Under Pressure, and features more of that reggae beat; and Part 4: Freeze is on Vapor Trails. Have a great day, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
I get the reggae feeling you were getting during the interlude section, but song is mostly a shuffle. I love when Rush plays a shuffle, because it’s kind of rare for them.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. There is a great live version of this from the Snakes & Arrows tour, if you ever want to watch them bring this awesome song to life. Also, happy birthday to Geddy today!!
Happy 71st Birthday Geddy. The songs Chain Lightning on Presto album. Enemy Within on Grace Under Pressure & Between Sun and Moon on Counterparts album ❣🤘🎉🎶♌
Bravo on extending Rush month(typo?!). To see how far you've come, your appreciation for them as Artists as well as being cool dudes, is a real treat Damon.
It’s NOT so much a “concept album” per se, BUT it does have some similarities to or elements of that might suggest it. Born: into a Subdivision Growing up: Analog Kid Discovering: Chemistry(of all types) Becoming: Digital Man Managing what is: The Weapon Evolving: New World Man Mortality: Losing It When you’re ready to depart: Countdown! 🤯🤘🖖✌️🎹🥁🎸🎤
I would say do each song separately and through a live performance here and there. This song has such a groove! The bass line is sick and Alex solo! 🤯🔥🤯🔥 There is an excellent live performance from the Snakes and Arrows tour of this song. Happy Birthday Geddy! 🎂🎉🎆
I would say that the individual songs would allow you to get more from each one, save the album listens for afterwards where you don't have to feel pressure and can just listen for the sheer enjoyment.
Digital Man is from the album "Signals" and yes the theme of the album is about life. The songs (Subdivisions, Analog Kid and Chemistry) is geared towards adolescence (high school) life. Digital Man and New World man is adulthood and Losing it old age I suppose. The two other songs on the album The Weapon is part 2 of the Fear series and Countdown i suppose fits in with the technology aspect of some of the songs. The idea for Digital Man is based on an engineer that was called into the studio to do some work of equipment for the band. The engineer mentioned to the band that he is always on the go and has a few more stops to make. The line " he plays fast forward for as long as he can, but he won't need a bed he a digital man" reflects the life of the engineer. The song is about a workaholic, always on the go and has no time for family or rest. My take is if Digital man was a movie, it would be Adam Sandler's "Click". If Analog Kid was a movie if would be Micheal J Fox's "Secret of my Success", the young adult that dreams about corporate life in the big city. Both songs and movies fit like a glove.
This is the album after Moving Pictures, 1982 The Police were a huge band and they certainly influenced Rush who were always looking to broaden their own musical horizons, not as a trend but they wanted to write new music that they wanted to play and embrace new influences and ideas. There is a theme running through this album but no definite concept, be fine if you hear it as singles from front to back, Rush were very good at song order arrangement on their albums.
Love your reactions. Rush is unreal brother. Please please react to the Live version of By-Tor/In The End/In The Mood/ 2112 Medley. Unbelievable performance.
I totally get it Dame - Rush songs take multiple listens to fully digest. It’s so easy to get drawn to Geddy’s bass, or what Neil’s doing different on this verse, then you realize you lost track of the lyrics, and then Alex does some cool harmonics. Glad you extended Rush week again - always enjoy your reactions.
Rush is a bit hard because there are some themes that go across albums- like the FEAR trilogy, for example. Some narratives carry across the breadth of their discography.
just for the record, I believe there is a small mistake in the lyrics. It says he'd like a Lover's wings to fly on but the Correct lyric is actually He'd like Another's wings to fly on.
They WILL challenge you to think… it’s their hallmark. Great reaction, kiddo. Here’s a thought… instead of doing an album, do a show. I’d love to say do Snakes and Arrows: Live or another later concert, but they weigh in at almost 3 hours. Some of their earlier shows would work- Exit… Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure: Live, or A Show of Hands really aren’t much longer than a modern album. It’s something to consider…
It's a quirky song, so much so that their first, and long time producer Terry Brown didn't like it and didn't want it to go on the Signals album. That disagreement contributed to them breaking with him and going with a different producer on Grace Under Pressure, and pretty much from then on.

I always love that The Analog Kid has to go through Chemistry to become the Digital Man 😂
🤯 That's what makes him a 'New World Man'! 😉🥰🐰
RUSH reactions!!!😄 "The Analog Kid", from this same album, SIGNALS, is a real banger as well! ☮️
in the song rush- free will

This is one of my favorite Rush songs ever, especially live
Wicked Bass lines! Thanks Dame. Watch the live version as suggested earlier. 👍

Cool review!!!
The intro fill is 1 of Neil's coolest
Great lyrics, great music, great band. This was my first Rush album (Signals), and still my favorite!
Bravo on extending Rush month(typo?!). To see how far you've come, your appreciation for them as Artists as well as being cool dudes, is a real treat Damon.
Listen to the album!!!!
It’s NOT so much a “concept album” per se, BUT it does have some similarities to or elements of that might suggest it.
Born: into a Subdivision
Growing up: Analog Kid
Discovering: Chemistry(of all types)
Becoming: Digital Man
Managing what is: The Weapon
Evolving: New World Man
Mortality: Losing It
When you’re ready to depart: Countdown!

Albums have always been meant to play in order(for several reasons). Just put down the needle and let her spin until the end of side!!

Neil has said the band was listening to a lot of The Police...
Welcome back to Rush reactions always enjoy them. Analog Kid from this same album(Signals) would be a great song for you to react to.

Nice reaction. This is one of my favorite Rush songs and the album is probably in my top five Rush albums.
Love your reactions. Rush is unreal brother. Please please react to the Live version of By-Tor/In The End/In The Mood/ 2112 Medley. Unbelievable performance.

Album week!! SWEET!! Maybe break an album up into 3 pieces/parts? That might work?
They WILL challenge you to think… it’s their hallmark. Great reaction, kiddo.

Signals is a banger of an album, by the way , you need to do "Middletown Dreams" studio version first - from Power Windows. Take Care D.
Today is Geddy's birthday!!

Bammm!
Apologies if I missed it but you MUST react to NEP drum solo in Frankfurt. Trust me bro….
Separate and play list. It would make things easier for your viewers.
Who plays bass ?Must bee Geddy Lee😀
Do the album and just break it up into diffent videos
