I’ve owned two Priuses and I have this to say. Reliability was top notch. I used them as a taxi and put about 70,000 miles a year in them and never had an issue. Also. If you do use them in that fashion you realize it’s not much more in cost to fill with gas than it is to charge a Tesla. Recently drove my Prius across the US alongside a friend with a Tesla. Cost to charge was 300ish and the Prius was 350ish. Prius didn’t have to stop as often nor did it take as long when it did need a fill up. Not many people will use them in that way. I personally think that for my use hybrid is still the way
I own both. Comparing SuperCharger costs on your trip to gas costs isn't exactly fair. Most charging is done at home at less than 1/2 the cost of supercharging. If you're using it as a taxi, you'll charge it up at home every night and it'll be ready to go in the morning --no need to stop off at a gas station like the Prius. On long trips I usually stop for a rest, coffee, bathroom break, lunch, etc., so to let the car charge for 20-30 minutes isn't a big deal.
That was hilarious when Doug stomped on the accelerator and literally nothing happened! That should have been one of his "quirks". #noacceleration #hiddensewingmachine
That long sweeping front end with a very shallow angle on a windshield gives it an incredible profile. This is such a radical departure from earlier Priuses. Props to Toyota for making something that looks closer to a concept car than a typical simplified final product. It really does look gorgeous.
@@longhairmullet Things that make cars impractical are often the ones that give them character. It's still a Toyota. It's still a Prius. So it will have expected reliability and quality of life features in it. I think you can sacrifice a little bit of something for that gorgeous look.
Japanese cars that have been in constant fraud for 35 years are not reliable. ecu, tires, safety bars in door, airbags, crash tests, tests and other parts... it's really serious.
As someone who hated the Prius, this one actually makes me want to buy one. It looks fantastic, and sadly we wont get the cool Yellow they showed it off in
Never thought I'd see the day I actually like the look of a Toyota Prius, but that flare fender and other line that swoops from the bottom of the back doors and goes up is very nice design. Great job to the design team.
oh pois, Toyota will continue these designs, their ev and ice showcase poster already have whole bunch of them with similar design aesthetic in mind. really cool stuffs
Toyota did an amazing job with the update on this generation. And the term "Car Enthusiast" is sometimes vague. Often it refers to people who like exotic, pretty, high performance (or all of the above) vehicles, but I think you can also be a car enthusiast for just _liking cars_ in general. And the reality is the vast majority of people are not buying expensive, high performance cars, nor can the majority of people afford electric cars yet. Most people just want an affordable, _reliable_ car, and that's where the Prius fits in. Making it look good and have more power will probably help them sell more of them to people who were on the fence about it because of lack of power and questionable looks before. Smart move on Toyota's part.
A car with a CVT transmission will always be boring, and that’s what you usually get in a Toyota. Because their customers want to drive slowly and have a good fuel efficiency. That’s the opposite of what someone who likes to drive cars want. Toyota & Lexus owners will be the first to buy fully autonomous cars. They just don’t care about driving, they do it because they have to 😂
@@alfredtomey toyota themselves don't care about driving. And neither do the people that buy their fuckin cars. This is why I support Nissan and Honda and not Toyota. Better brands, better cars.
I hate it when “car guys” think they can decide whether you are a car guy or not just because of what you drive. It’s annoying to see people in comment sections saying “No car guys like EVs”, or “You’re not a car guy if you don’t daily a (insert loud obnoxious car). Maybe I want to daily something that’s comfortable and quiet. Not everything is about constant douching around and driving 30 over the speed limit. Car guys are people who like cars. @@UProductions457 Heh, thanks. Yeah, agreed - I've always gone with the simple view of "You like cars? - You're a car guy." Then just like everything else in life, that can divvy up into more specific sects of how/why people do, just as long as everyone recognizes that everyone else likes cars for _some_ reason.
The differentiator that isn’t being mentioned is the freedom and flexibility of a hybrid vs. an electric. With the Prius you can still throw gas in the tank at any gas station in a couple of minutes and drive anywhere without considering refueling as a factor in planning.
@@1472fred I live in a country where most people live in old apartment blocks and electricity is very expensive. Having electric car here is not practical.
Yeah, I feel like policies are jumping too suddenly from "favour petrol" to "favour EVs". We should have a transitionary period of favouring plug-in hybrids, which don't require much new infrastructure.
@@user-cv8gm2vx2v that's not really valid, you need infrastructure built by government to get gas too. If you talk about storing fuel, like in a gas tank, you absolutely can store electricity "off-grid". That ironically means that EVs are actually more private, you can charge your car from your own solar energy, it's easier then refining oil.
@@hikkamorii government built infrastructure? Like what? Oil companies build refineries, service stations, operate truck companies etc... Apart from the roads, what government built infrastructure does an ICE car need? To charge an EV from solar, you're going to need a very large solar array. And plenty of time. An average house array is 5-7 kW. Many EVs have batteries in the 50 to 100kW/h range. So more than a day or even two days to fully charge, (you usually estimate 5 hours full solar on a sunny summer day) and that's if you're not running any other appliances. BTW, I've lived off grid from (mostly) solar for the past 12 years, so I'm well aware of solar's capabilities and shortcomings.
Once this has the PHEV available it's looking really good. About 220hp and full running in EV mode for much of your daily driving and then still 50mpg+ for long trips. Just a really great solid practical car.
@@FrankPerkins I don't know for the Prius. The only PHEV I know of with a heat pump is the Outlander and even then it seems to go back to engine heat below freezing.

Mid 7 seconds isn’t slow! The mid 90s Mustang GT took something like 6.6-6.8 seconds to do 0-60. This is quite impressive for a Prius. It seems like Toyota was napping for years while competitors made compelling fun cars and now they are feeling the sales slump of some of their formerly flagship models. I smell a Toyota comeback! Can’t wait to see you review the 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro with the 6 speed
I still can't get over Toyota and their TRD badging. It's like they are saying to the buying public, "You want a turd, then buy from us!". Just like Chevrolet when they didn't understand why the Nova wasn't selling well in Mexico..Well, no one wants a car named "No Go".
I am a Prius enthusiast. I have owned two. Love working on them. Reliability and low cost of ownership gets me excited. So yes, the Prius is an enthusiasts car, for enthusiasts of early retirement
Agreed, on our fourth Prius, something like a million miles across all of them, never a drama. I'll leave it to others to go fast, I just want reliable, comfortable and efficient transport that saves my money for other things in life.
On my second Prius. The last generations model I thought looked nice. This one looks better than every car on the road that's under a high-end Mercedes. I never cared for the aesthetics of a Prius Ive always been about the practicality and fiscal responsibility but wow what a nice looking car now.. but almost $50k????
@@K.B.Williams Yes they used the excuse of a better design to raise the price significantly. No one seems to be noticing. Not sure if it is still worth the money.
My late wife in Australia had a used 2003 Prius Series Two until she passed away in 2015. We both loved that car. I remember we drove it from Newcastle New South Wales to Ballarat in Victoria, a distance of some 1100 km, and we refueled only once. It also performed well on another trip to Victoria when we went to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup in 2013, and drove the Great Ocean Road, and returned home via northwest Victoria and midwestern New South Wales. On both trips we averaged about 4.5 L/100 km. I don't have a car or a license anymore but if I did I'd consider the new Prius on looks alone, knowing what the Prius offers in terms of driving ability.
Even though I liked previous years of German cars models, I have to agree on this one. They really messed up looks of the new models. This Prius looks so much better than for ex. beaver BMW 4 series.
Significantly better than “many” German entry models? Hmmmm, you’ve obviously never owned a German vehicle to make such a claim…. You can’t compare a German vehicle to a Japanese one. However, the new Prius is a step in the right direction.
Two reasons why hybrids like this have a role: 1) many apartment dwellers may not be able to charge an electric at home, and even if you have a house your electric wiring might not be able to support faster charging 2) in more rural areas public charging is hard to find so a longer trip may be tricky.
@@tesla-FUNboy did you not read his comments? It’s not always possible for charging.Tesla has also experienced a lot of quality control issues. With Toyota, that’s never an issue.
I've never had a problem finding some place to refuel my Prius and I've never had to wait an hour for it to refuel. I park on the street at home and I don't have chargers at work. Toyota is right for sticking to hybrids. If only hydrogen had received research efforts, we could have had a hydrogen generator at every gas station by now.
I owned a 2006 Prius that had 215k miles when I sold it and it still ran great. Best car I ever owned. I'm a car enthusiast but love the practicality of the Prius and it's reliability, it just goes and goes with minimal maintenance might I add. People say the Prius is slow but it's always been more than adequate acceleration for day to day driving. You just have to really lay into it to get it to go. I did go to a Rav4 Prime and if you go back to the Prius yeah you'll notice it's slow haha. But the R4P has really impressive power. I miss the go kart like handling, with the right set of wheels and tires it's a great handling car. One thing I won't miss from my 2G Prius is the ride quality. It was awful the Rav4 prime is so much more quieter and smoother withe large wheels. The ground clearance is nice too. I actually lifted mine slightly because it was scraping on everything. Anyway the new one looks great but I went with the bigger car it's even more practical.
I, too, had a 200k+ mile 06 Prius that I sold to my Aunt in Portland. She's still driving it! Nearing 300k miles now and still going strong! New (cheap now) battery pack at 280k. Amazing little machine. ....still like my 03 BMW M3 better though.... 😉
@@chase1897 I own an E46 M3 and still have mad respect for the Prius. It's a humble workhorse and should be appreciated for it's enduring technological prowess
I love it. I think this is objectively the best car for most people who aren't into sports cars. And as far as performance, I am 100% sure that the vast majority of car enthusiasts could not out-run Ridge Chaser going full touge in this Prius. We already know no one can escape him in a Honda Fit. I don't put much stock in the judgements of spec sheet racers and parking enthusiasts. This car is on the top 5 of new cars I'd buy, if I was the sort to buy new cars.
The new Prius looks to be the best simultaneous daily driver and family car that money can buy. Affordable, practical, stylish, easy-to-live-with, dependable, safe, comfortable, well-equipped, reasonably nice to drive and quick enough to satisfy any road, All-Wheel-Drive, eco-friendly, and world-class fuel economy. What else can you ask for? I'd also love for you to try out the new Prime variant too. :3
@@paul562 Agreed. It is not priced much different and the power and gas mileage are virtually the same. In that case, even though I do not like SUV's, I would go the same route you are.
The best reason back in the day, before other EVs came out, for buying a Prius was every now and then I would have to take the Galveston Ferry. When you drove your car on the ferry you had to turn it off so that the crew didn't die of car exhaust. BUT Priuses were the only car back in the day that you could keep on and still run your AC. This was REALLY important in Texas during the summer and they were really popular cars in the area.
I have slept in the prius overnight on road trips or camping, you can leave it running overnight with the ac on and it uses almost no gas. Another feature people miss while they are projecting their insecurities about how it looks.
I LOVE this re-design. This might be one of the best selling cars for years to come. Great MPG, and looks great. Most people hated the look of the Prius and it finally seems like Toyota realized that. Great job with this one..

As a former 2nd-gen Prius owner I am so excited to see that Toyota cares enough about this car still to make a new one that looks this good and has this much power. The Prius has always been maligned by car enthusiasts for being ugly and slow, but to me it has always been maybe the single-best all-around car money can buy. They’re insanely reliable, insanely efficient, roomy, and practical in every way. And now they’re not ugly and slow anymore.
I have a 2nd gen Prius. If you can get over having an ugly slow car, it's simply the best, there was never any pretense about it being a fun enthusiast car
I've owned a lot of different cars in my lifetime and the Prius was my favorite. Not the most comfortable or sporty, but it was an absolute joy to drive 450+ miles on 10 gallons of gas which made it not only a great commuter, but also a fantastic cross country touring vehicle. I will buy another, just waiting for the new plug-in.
Too bad they don't put in a 16 or 18 gallon tank in them... I'd love to be able to drive non-stop from Iowa to Pennsylvania. Criminals would love them for getting away from the police, LoL!
I thought they all had really cheap interiors. I have to sit inside the new one to see if it has that cheap quality to it. Yeah, they did a much better job on the outside. I still can't figure out why they have to make a car so freaking ugly in the first place.
I waited 2.5 years for this car. I originally ordered a 2020 model. But the dealership got a 2023 Prius and I didn't want to wait any longer. I've owned a Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, and Jeep Patriot in the past. All I can say is.... This car is simply, the best car I've ever had. The design is so on point, it feels sporty, but it's a hatchback! It's design reminds me of a Tesla, ford focus, VW golf, and Lambo Urus. The interior is amazing and feels quality and soli. It's got excellent mileage, power and features.
The new prius looks great, and honestly, the Camry XLE and XSE are absolutely great cars at their price point. My dad and I rented a 2019 SE when we were in Florida for a week and we genuinely struggled to get the car to average less than 30mpg and it rode really well, and it had fantastically applied window tints and comfortable seats. Toyota has really stepped up their game.
I’ve got a 2019 Camry SE as a commuter car and average 35.2 mpg. I don’t think there’s any point in owning a Corolla anymore since it’s smaller, has more road noise, a 6 speed transmission rather than an 8 speed, and still gets close to the same gas mileage as the Camry. When you look at the numbers, you really don’t save that much more by trying to go to a hybrid or getting a lightweight Economy car. With a fully electric, you might break even after 10 years. But that could be changing in the future if they are able to get the price down.
I have a 18 Camry hybrid LE and for commuting I between 45-55 mpg depending on the outside temperature and I don't really have any complaints. I feel like it's surprisingly fast but part of that is because the previous fastest car I've had was a 2003 Avalanche, so perhaps my perspective isn't that relevant
The current Camry is one hell of a looker. It's style reads RWD, but its fWD like all Camry's. Too bad they didnt go all out with making a RWD Supercharged Camry for their TRD version.
I do detailing for a living and I really hope more manufacturers keep doing the Easter egg stuff. It brings me joy and gives me something to do while completing mundane tasks
I drove cab in 2010s, the best car in our fleet was a 2013 priis V. My dispatcher once asked me how I managed to pull off a pickup that was impossible by computer metrics. I said "breaking the law." Honestly every new car can break the law easily in speed. But the prius' sport mode (sorry, "power mode") has always been decently quick. Launch speed and torque are all that matters in a society with a top speed of 80mph. A lot of "fast" is up to driver skill.
I daily a 2011 3rd gen. Hands down my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. The biggest thing to note is that it tows and handles very well. Still get 35+mpg towing 1500lbs on a little trailer.
I own a black 2010 Prius. Got it in 2021. In my mind the best looking Prius. 2nd gen was not to my tastes, while 4th gen went too far. It is my first car with an automatic transmission and that eCVT is really something. It even has a HUD, but is missing adaptive cruise and media/nav-center. I really do not understand all the hate. I just love it.
@Pulstar, I have a gen 3 as well, same year as yours. Early gen 3's do have some things to watch out for like blown head gaskets as they age. I replaced the head gasket in mine recently at a shop for 4k. It had 266k miles. I think people hate it for being slow. There are tons of lead footed drivers who get mad that you don't floor it off of every green light or highway onramp and pass you in an irritated manner. Though I've never seen one going slow in the passing lane like Doug claimed. Maybe that's only in California.
The design actually looks so nice, as someone who's driven a Prius V for so long. The increased horsepower improvements is also something amazing to look forward to in the future as well.

This looks great compared to the 2 Gen Prius I drove for 9 years, but ultimately for me the #1 thing when buying a car is the total cost of ownership. The Prius has always been great with TCO having a reasonable starting price and amazing efficiency.
I've never owned a Prius, but looking at the cost of a battery replacement, it's fairly comparable to any major work that needs to be done on a car. Somewhere between $2,000-$4,000 after driving for 100k-150k miles. When taking into account similar priced repairs typical of most non-toyota cars within that mile range and comparing cost of gas vs electric, it's a pretty reasonable purchase for a commuter. Not saying I would buy one, but it isn't bad. For some, an older Nissan leaf might be a more compelling option if you aren't planning on driving more than 100 miles a day for a commute.
@@ChrisParayno these days you can DIY the batteries yourself. As long as the batteries haven't changed much between each generation, this probably has the lowest and easiest repairs for any DIYer in the electric car category
@@DM9_eyo 100k to 150k is too soon for most Priuses on needing a battery. Fewer gen 3's failed than gen 2. Gen 4 has basically no issues with anything, just ugly to most people. I've owned two Priuses one 2009 and one that was a 2007 These vehicles are very reliable and surprisingly fun to drive. They're easy to fix. And the amount of miles per gallon you get is a very very strong point. You don't have the range anxiety of electric. All in all I'll probably buy another one.

I really hope that with the introduction of the new Prius, that Lexus will update the CT. The outgoing model is the same car as it was 12 years ago aside from minor interior and exterior changes, and with me owning a 2012 CT200h, I would love to see a new CT with the new Prius powertrain.
Isn’t the Lexus UX the replacement for the CT200? I agree, o would love to see a Lexus version of this new Prius but I doubt it will happen any time soon.
@@Alviniscute I saw a used one for sale awhile back at a dealer in Marion, Iowa, but that place known for selling problematic cars though(they had a Porsche Cayenne for only like $10k that sat on the lot for months for some reason)... so gotta wonder if that particular CT had battery issues or something. Anyhow, it was the first and only Lexus CT that I've ever seen in person, and it was actually a pretty good looking hatchback imo, I thought to myself "I'd totally buy one of those".

Feels weird to say that the Prius looks great. Its bump in power and AWD configuration is very attractive as well. Seems like a great package overall. Great review, Doug!
I drove the Prius hybrid and it was amazing. It is like a magic carpet that is fast and gets 57 mpg. UFO styling and everything you want in a vehicle. It is hard to resist.
They only sold 59k units last year because they stopped making them. I know several people that were interested in buying a Prius last year (including me) but you couldn’t get one. 2 of my local dealerships said they hadn’t gotten any new Prius’s in months and it was as if Toyota stopped production of them. My guess because they were retooling the factories for the new model
Friend works in the tooling line for Toyota and yes that is correct, unfortunately demand exceeded their estimates but the new models are having a lot of weight put behind them which is exciting!
My friend owns dealerships and he said one of the big things was the demand for batteries and prioritizing the RAV4s and maybe Highlanders if I remember correctly. When I was in the market i felt like why stop at a prius and just go for the RAV4 for a little more. Granted my family is much bigger than it was when I purchased my prius. We ended up adding the Sienna because of the size and we just couldn't find the RAV4 PHEV.
I drive an 08 Civic and I'm switching to this because I like my flat board cheese wedge cars with neato gauge clusters. That way I can gauge while I cluster so that I can cluster while I gauge.
My grandmother had a reserve on a 2022 Prius prime. As soon as this was announced I got her to change it to the 2023 model thanks to the chip shortage delay. Very excited to see it when she gets it hopefully next month
Great review. The only thing that concerns me is the increased road noise. I bought my 2007 Prius because I compared it to similar cars at the time and was impressed by the quiet cabin while driving.
I agree. This is something one will experience every time you are in the car… making for a pleasurable or annoying experience. Toyota how much more would it have cost to properly insulate for road noise! Huh 🙄
just bought a 07’ prius and im in love with it. i wasn’t looking for looks or a beefy engine. i was looking for more bang for my buck and it delivered. with great gas mileage and an interior that was somewhat ahead of its time, i love it.
Thing is going to sell amazingly well because it's not just good looking. It's well equipped, gets great gas mileage and is properly priced. I've never bought a brand new car, and the last used car I bought was a Scatpack. This will be a great contrast to the muscle car when I get it😅
We'll see how well it sells. I hope it does fantastic but the market likes SUVs now. The Rav4 Hybrid is Toyota's bestselling hybrid and has been for many years because it's roomier and has better visibility than the Prius and doesn't look weird.
I own a Prius and a Honda Accord and the Prius is always the long distance road trip car. The used ones tend to have a ton of mileage because they are so cheap to drive. Mine is 10 years old and 140k and counting up fast. Bet yours will see a more miles than the Scatpack. Who cares about the mileage impacting the value, isn’t just a Prius!
I especially like the way the angle of the windshield nearly matches the angle of the hood. It's a design cue you normally see only in exotic or, as Doug said, concept cars.
My second Prius was a 2010, and it had the touring package. That meant lower profile tires, quicker steering, and more. My lifetime average was 47 MPG over 118,000 miles. That was considering that the Bridgestone tires it had lowered the mileage about 2 MPG compared to the stock tires. That is ALSO considering that we took several major (4,000 miles or more) road trips and drove 30K - 40K miles at or above 80 MPH. Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think, the Prius is NOT slow on the interstate. There are also people who have the mistaken idea that the Prius is small. NOT! Our 2010 had more passenger room than a friend's 2012 CAMRY. Reliability? Oil changes, wiper blades, and a couple of light bulbs was our expenses.
As a car enthusiast, I love my Prius. It's the best track day companion car to transport tires, jacks etc. And also a great car to take to the shop to pickup parts.
Thank you, Doug for this excellent review of the Prius. You know by now that us, Prii owners don't buy them for emotional allégresse, but purely for their fuel efficiency. I am on my 3rd Prius - a 2016 Prius V and I love it. The 2023 model is an exciting design and many, including myself, will be upgrading to this model. I was thinking about the T Model 3 but the 2023 Prius got me reconsidering. Forget the fugliness, long live the 2023 Prius
No intention to disrespect, but somehow i'm not surprised that the type of person to use words like 'allégresse' in a youtube comment is also the person who has bought 3 Prius's. l just love it LOL
I'd definitely stay away from Teslas. At least if your goal is saving money. Teslas aren't very reliable relative to Toyotas. Also, the sticker price on this is probably about half of the Tesla.
Doug didn't mention dead on reliability. I'm on my second Prius and am amazed on how bulletproof this car is. I have a 2010 third gen w/ 160,000 miles and it costs little to own. I live in a rural artea, so charging is an issue, so for now I'll drive Prius.

@@Blooppenheimer yeah sorry no. I mean looks are subjective and I agree many past generations of Prius were very awkward, but this one is a hell of a lot better and actually faster for once so I'm going to have to disagree with you here
I recently rented a 2021 model and I was getting 67 miles to the gallon until the weather got cold and then it went down to 62 MPG, still great. That MPG really surprised me and so did the quality and comfort of the ride and the interior. I never even heard the engine till the weather got cold and I needed heat. However this 2023 model is beautiful compared to the version I rented and much more responsive. I just don't like the low profile tires as they sacrifice ride quality. Might buy this if I can get it at a good price.

Toyota really hit it out of the park with its looks, its really fantastic. And the fact that it's got such good MPG's and you can still hit up the gas station the old fashion way, the price, the boost in performance...yeah its going to do really well.
I'm on my 4th Prius and I totally love them. Saves me more than a thousand dollars per year in gasoline, After years of driving., they still feel and drives like when they were new. The new model is smashingly gorgeous!
I picked up the 2021 after my civic si was totaled. Best decision I ever made I miss the civic it was fun but I had to replace the ac in that thing 3 times. The Prius hardly wears its breaks, and oil. It’s built like a tank and when the ac in my house went out in July it made a pretty good tent
That’s something a lot of people don’t realize. They are incredibly reliable and drive the same on day one as 10 years later. If you want to hold onto a car for a decade and save a lot of money this is the best there is. I’ve had zero issues.
Akio-san is really doing Toyota some good. It'd be easy to just continue the norm since Toyota was wildly successful before, but Akio is a true petrolhead and won't stand for Toyota to be nothing but boring cars with good reliability. What a legend
The real test is if Jeremy Clarkson reviews it and admits it looks good... He's done this before. He used to criticise Vauxhall/Opel for their dull dull cars. Then they had a concept show car that looked a whole lot better, and he promised to eat his own hair if they put it into production. They did. He did, a hair omelette prepared and consumed on set in Top Gear. The management at Vauxhall must have cracked open a bottle of champagne.
Doug noted the big drop in Prius sales in 2017. That was the same year the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 came out. I'm a Prius owner and I expected to own my Prius EV by now, but Toyota seems to be at least 5 years behind their competition. My next car is going to be an EV and if Toyoda keeps pretending Hydrogen is a viable technology and customers like me want another hybrid, its seems unlikely that EV will be a Toyota. I think he's done a huge disservice to the company by focusing on the wrong technology and I think Toyota is going to be in big financial trouble in the next few years.
I had the chance to drive one of these during the Thanksgiving long weekend. I was very impressed by the fuel efficiency of this car. Amazing. We drove 4 hours and 40 minutes after starting from full tank, and at the end of the trip the fuel level indicator was showing that the car had used only half a tank. Next day we drove anoter couple of hours, and then finally I had to go to the gas station. To my surprise, the tank was full with less than 30 dollars. So, if you're interested in not visiting the gas station often and getting a lot of miles for your money, this car delivers just that, amazing efficiency. This car works well, looks good and it does not cost a fortune such as full electric cars. I don't care about speed. The car is not fast, but I don't need it to be fast, just efficient. On the not so positive side, I thought the seats were not comfortable and the driver's position feels too low. Maybe I am used to other cars which are higher from the road.
I'm really starting to realize how good of a value these newer gen toyotas are. I personally always drove 1 of the 3 German cars (audi, merc, bmw) and as most car people know, those cars are riddled with options and add-ons. I recently swapped cars with my friend for a day because he needed a "ballet-able" car for his work related event (essentially a car someone can sit comfortably in the back seat) so I had a opportunity to go around in a 2022 Corolla Sport while he drove my Audi A8L. Now putting aside the "luxury", since the Corolla wasn't for that, I'm amazed for how much of the stuff was standard and for its price.
Yeah, I think a 7 in the DougScore for value isn't doing this thing justice. It is unbelievable to me that you can get an AWD vehicle with 50+ MPG, decent multimedia/Android Auto, and tons of safety features, for less than $30k that is also very likely to do 150k miles in it's lifetime without much fuss.
If you think Corolla has tons of features which btw its Sport model isn't really cheap in its class, you will be surprised what's standard in KIA/Hyundai these days!
I'm actually really excited for this new Prius. I've been looking for a hybrid because my apartment building doesn't have anywhere to charge an EV overnight, so I'd be stuck charging at stations, and I feel that most under 30k hybrids are either REALLY ugly (old prius) or are just a bit lack luster, so to see this is exciting.
My gf lives in a condo w/o charging and she owns a Tesla (I do too, but live in a house). When she goes grocery shopping she plugs it in at the store and gets 30 or so miles on it. She can go a few weeks before running low. If it gets too low, we'll swap cars and I'll charge hers up at my place. Works well.
1) Take a look at EVmatch. They're the most cost effective commercial EV charger and you may find some in your neighborhood on their map. Owners are usually happy to have you parking overnight to charge and while they can set their own rates, most people set them lower than other commercial chargers. 2) Look for local EV Charger installers to work with as a tenant advocate so you can approach your landlord about EV charging. I used to sell chargers and it was frequently a tenant who would reach out to us about charging. We would come up with a plan and the tenant would help us get a meeting with the landlord to explain how they can make money with an EV charger.
@@kenbob1071 sounds like a good situation you're in, but neither my local grocery store, nor my Uni, have charging, so I'd really be stuck unless I decided to go back to my parents place everytime I needed a full charge 😅
The previous generation looked like a styled-by-committee project, being different from every angle, and had plenty of sharp competing angles to choose from. The new one may have some derivative styling cues, but it does look cohesive, and attractive. The major advantages this has over an EV is pricing, and the Prius will work when its cold. My buddy's Model 3 couldn't/wouldn't charge for 5 days during a recent cold snap... I've never considered buying a Prius before, but this one is on the list.
I have owned the new 2023 for the last few weeks. Has much more pickup than any previous versions. The car has a much smaller trunk. If you need to put a walker or wheelchair in the back, you must take down both back seats. You can’t change out any of the lights on the inside for aftermarket; they all use a circuit-style light. The dome and reading lights in front aren’t that bright. The car looks very sporty inside and out. If you are six feet or taller, watch your head getting in and out; the ceiling is cut significantly lower than in previous generations. The main car battery is back in the trunk, which is more accessible. The car has no spare tire, so if you buy one, you lose a lot more of your trunk. The vehicle makes a cool noise when driving slowly through parking lots, more of a head-turner for people. I do like the lock and unlock noise from the car; it’s new and sounds great. You can turn on your vehicle and off from an app. Car has built-in Wi-Fi from AT&T, not as fast as Verizon, but the connection has not been an issue as the connection is stable everywhere. Also, in the app, you can see the health of your car, see if your doors are unlocked, and lock them. I wish the app would let you roll windows up and down. The car is ultra quiet on roads and freeways. This is the fifth Prius I have owned; they have never broken down. I have never taken any of my Prius previously to a shop for any repairs and that’s with the cars having over 300k in miles. ~Chad James

While driving, to have the "pick up & go," you need to have the electric boost up to a decent level. There's a way to drive a Prius for optimal performance, as mentioned above. Another example is, when testing 0-60, you don't just floor and hold the pedal down like a regular car. You actually start to release the pedal to a certain extent, and you can feel the car go faster. I know, sounds crazy but, true.
This! There is definitely a difference in how you drive a Prius (and I assume most hybrids from Toyota nowadays) where you feather the pedal once your nearing your desired speed to kick it into using neither the engine or the batteries or just using the battery to maintain speed.
Lexus CT owner, really sad it was discontinued but Prius definitely looks like it could be my next vehicle purchase when I trade-in. 57MPGs is pretty convincing
Just wait till you start having kids. "I'll never drive a minivan!" "That new Kia Carnival has some interesting and useful design choices, I wouldn't mind that"
THIS IS THE WAY. All car designers and auto corporations should be taking notes. A car that looks good, drives well, and doesn't break the bank- in this day and age...WOW. I don't need a super fancy engine as a daily driver- something that's beautifully designed, functional/reliable, and affordable- thats the winning combo! That's what the masses want! It really doesn't cost them too much more in terms of hard upgrades, just a better design team that thinks about the aesthetics of the body work, and people will be lining up to buy it. Honestly as a non-car expert, if someone switched the 'PRIUS' name badge to 'TESLA' on the back I would absolutely believe it. Tastefully designed...and you won't have to go into debt for years to own one! This is the direction I want future cars to go in.
I like how it looks, it's different from the outgoing models, but in a good way. Personally, I liked the design of the outgoing generation, and this is good too.
It looks so cool, suitable for those who work or have a family using the car every day, or traveling to faraway places because the selling point of this car are about fuel economy, 4 doors with a spacious trunk, and a futuristic design
18:51 - if you drive a 1999 Sentra and upgraded to this, this car would be fast. It's all about perspectives. When you come from so little, you begin to appreciate all the little things.
That is the first Prius that has made me feel anything but apathy. The design is magnificent, and the panel gaps are so small I honestly thought that it _was_ a coupe.
The side profile of this Prius makes me think it’s aimed at people who like the Tesla Model 3, but don’t or can’t go full EV just yet. This is the sexiest Prius I’ve seen. I dated a woman in the mid 2000s and her parents were early Prius adopters. Loved the gas mileage, even though they were not the fastest and not the prettiest to look at. They serve a purpose and most Prius owners absolutely adore them.

Thank you for taking the time to type that. Very well said.
A car with a CVT transmission will always be boring, and that’s what you usually get in a Toyota. Because their customers want to drive slowly and have a good fuel efficiency. At 52 mpg, the Prius can go 587.6 miles on a single tank (11.3 gal). That is incredible.
The differentiator that isn’t being mentioned is the freedom and flexibility of a hybrid vs. an electric. With the Prius you can still throw gas in the tank at any gas station in a couple of minutes and drive anywhere without considering refueling as a factor in planning.
So old school Total electric is where it’s at
@@1472fred I live in a country where most people live in old apartment blocks and electricity is very expensive. Having electric car here is not practical.

@@user-cv8gm2vx2v that's not really valid, you need infrastructure built by government to get gas too.

And it works damn good too. And audio, and 12V USB-to-gadgets.
You also would've died from the car exhaust, so its not simply for the employee's safety that you're shutting off the engine.

Right. I love power mode. A tesla did that in front of me once and hooooly-those suckers are quick.

did you ever have to replace the battery?

:o good point!
They haven't sold a lot for a few years. Way before the pandemic was even a thing.
Maybe they stopped production due to the need to refit their factories to create this new design.

Who cares about the mileage impacting the value, isn’t just a Prius!
lol i cannot take anyone seriously who calls a car a scatpack
I never thought I've find myself looking at a Prius and thinking "dang, that's good looking!"
Having the instrument cluster there is so extremely handy. My 2010 Civic had it. You don't realize how handy it is until you don't have it anymore.

I love my 08 Prius
It's not just you. The seating position of the 5th gen is much lower than my 2nd gen.
Sounds like your next car should be a lexus!
@@zachmiller8823 i saw an engine teardown of a prius on youtube and it had run 500k kms and still was in great shape
If you think Corolla has tons of features which btw its Sport model isn't really cheap in its class, you will be surprised what's standard in KIA/Hyundai these days!
@@zeak166 You means car that breakdown in 2 years? No
I'm actually really excited for this new Prius.
Works well.
@@kenbob1071 that’s a drag tho
I have owned a model 3 since 2019. Have not had any issues with driving or charging in cold weather. Others in colder climates have not had issues.

@@Fhwgads11 Damn, why you gotta make sense!? 😒 no... it's not.
~Chad James
Would it be as good to use as a camping car as previous years have been?
Rav4 Prime needs to be rolled out everywhere. Availability and dealer markups is nuts.
I love that they put all those quirks in there to please Doug and his audience.
The next Lamborghini will have great legroom in back because of him.
2023 Prius is 5/10.

I’d buy one but the road noise is just not great. It drowns out the music and I have to raise my voice to talk passengers when on the freeway.
I don’t care about driver assist gimmicks. I want a premium stereo and a quiet cabin and efficiency.
Sounds like you want a Lexus ES, no?
18:11 The constant obsession with being "FAST" vs. fast enough (Will it make a driver immortal? Do you run from the cops? Will it prevent traffic jams?) is worth a whole episode. Speed is mostly used for showboating, tailgating and impatient wasting of energy.
Or car enthusiasts that find joy in driving. There is a time and place for it, but driving a good sports car through winding roads is fun.

i love that gauge cluster, as a big fan of Heads Up DIsplays, this kind of bridges the gap because its not QUITE on your windshield in your permanent line of sight, but its a full cluster so you get much more info than a HUD would give. i like it. I drive a 10 year old Mazda 3 with a flip screen HUD and ill never go back to looking below the wheel again. My next car will need a similar system because i refuse to lose features when i buy my next vehicle which will be 15-20 years NEWER than an old mazda hatchback

God I want one. I cannot believe I’d ever want a Prius.
I like how it looks, it's different from the outgoing models, but in a good way. Personally, I liked the design of the outgoing generation, and this is good too.
I also liked the look of the previous models. I always thought it looked like a space ship. Pretty cool IMO
The old Honda civics had the speed above the steering wheel as well! Love that design. Great video Doug!
It looks so cool, suitable for those who work or have a family using the car every day, or traveling to faraway places because the selling point of this car are about fuel economy, 4 doors with a spacious trunk, and a futuristic design
This is one of the best hybrid cars that you can get, I would get this over a Tesla.
18:51 - if you drive a 1999 Sentra and upgraded to this, this car would be fast. It's all about perspectives. When you come from so little, you begin to appreciate all the little things.

I drive a 1997 sentra, it gets about 31-35mpg, fills up with about $45 todays money and goes 85mph fine. I would definitely upgrade to a new Z tho 😏.
