You got so much balls to show us your failures. Don’t stop chasing after your goals and sharing your journey here on UA-cam. We understand that life isn’t flawless like it seems on social media. Your running clips were awesome! 🙂
you humbly call yourself NON-ELITE ! But keep this in mind Sage, you ARE one of the best Marathoners on this planet...the few hundreds faster than you is just a minute percentile at way over 7.6 billion people in the world! you ARE GREAT!
@RunFor OurLives thats totally wrong cos it also depends on the Country you are living in and you cant always take the world stage as a comparison, period. In greece you kill 'em all with 2:17 and still go to the Olympics. In Romania and many other countries as well . And they are still considered elite and take part in world Championships cos they ARE the best of the best meeting the very best of the top.
17th overall! Maybe you did not reach your goal but it is something to be proud of. Congrats and keep your enthusiasm, you are an inspiration to average runners like me.
Regardless of the outcome this past Sunday, your whole process and honest assessments are so inspirational, especially for us mere mortals. Thanks for sharing...and keep on crushing it!!
I think it was Churchill who said success is continuing from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm ;n) Love your drive and positive attitude and look forward to following your trail season Sir, rock on...
As you sing in your intro, you've got to keep "Runnin' Down a Dream." I actually admire your willingness to share this with us. Not many people are willing to be that vulnerable in such a public way. I am rooting for you.
Sage Brother, I want to thank you for showing us slower runners that even you guys can have a bad day. Honesty, Integrity & Transparency! You're keepin' it Real!
I'm no where near that fast, but I am always solo like that as my pace is just too fast for the main pack and too slow for the front pack. And yeah, it is tough.
You have the best attitude in the sport. I come back to your videos time and time again because it inspires me when I’m getting down on myself; your relentless pursuit of goals is just astounding and noteworthy. Thank you for sharing with us, it’s beyond helpful in more ways than one. Keep rockin’!
It seems people of Copenhagen are great. Sage ,You have one of best race coverage from any marathon. Thanks Stefan and other for the great coverage. Sage- you are awesome as always.
I truly enjoy your videos as they show a ton of class, guts, and character. How many folks open up their lives, dreams, and goals to probably millions and then lay it on the line for everyone to see? I chuckle at the folks who criticize for they have no idea what a challenge it is to compete at your elite level. On a humanistic level and hopefully many folks will see deeply enough into your commentary to get it, your description of your goals, training, and achievement (or not) is actually a metaphor for life itself. Every one of us has dreams and goals, many of us work toward them, and often we fall short. However, in the effort we are better than had we not challenged ourselves. Sadly many don't even attempt to attain their goals and remain stuck at much less than their capabilities.
The only real failure is not to run the very best race you can. Did you put in everything you had? Then you didn't fail. Keep pushing - can't wait to see you in my city of Atlanta in 2020!
16 weeks out from my first marathon! I watch your training videos before most of my runs, you are definitely helping the running community in a big way mate :)
This is so refreshing to see such honesty and openness to talk about your "failures" (obviously relative). In a world of highlight reel social media presence this is so great to see! thank you
Do the things that make you happy. I admire your honesty about your goals and sometimes disappointments in such a public forum. Keep going and have a great summer.
Keep going good brother, you'll get it next time. Loved watching the clips of your marathon. I found myself cheering you on as if it was real time. Good stuff, we're inspired!
You're an inspiration. I've had trouble recommitting to running since the Boston Marathon. I PR'd in those terrible conditions but have had numerous lingering issues and I haven't felt good since a week before Boston. Even though it was a nice PR it was also much slower than I think my fitness was with peak mileage around 110 while working full time. I have a long term goal of OTQ that given my progression with less than 2 years of serious running could start to be in the realm of possibility if I keep up with the consistency and mileage while staying healthy. This video has given me a boost and I'm looking forward to my run after work.
Don't compare yourself to Rupp, maybe if you had Galens coaches and their 'secret sauce' you'd have managed it- but i wouldn't be following you on youtube if you did, great running, consider Edinburgh next year- it's IAAF certified with a but net downhill, Great running love the music keep it up:)
And an amazing city. I took 3hrs 50 and that’s still top 20% as a first timer amateur with only 6 weeks proper training before it. Sub 4 was my goal and was happy, it is a great race though
Mate, don’t be disappointed with that run. 2:23:36 is incredible! That’s a average pace of 3:24/per/km! Mate that’s awesome! Don’t be down about that run, because you can always come back stronger and better. Keep training and don’t feel disappointed, just think that: 1) you’ve completed a marathon coming in 17th place with an average pace of 3:24/per/km. And 2) if you keep training and keep staying motivated you’ll be able to reach your goal. Sage, been watching your videos for about a week, and you’ve been able to get me back motivated in my running and feeling pretty confident my running. So don’t feel down, but also thanks for all the motivation and great videos. Thanks to you I’ve gotten back feeling excited, motivated and confident in my training, running and eventual goal of running a half-marathon by the end of the year with an average pace of 5:00/per/km or under without stopping and in the next couple of years to run a marathon! Cheers Sage and congrats on the run! (Copenhagen is incredible isn’t it? I loved it when I was able to go there for a holiday) Cheers and again, Congrats on the Marathon
Sorry the race didn’t turn out like you were hoping, but what a great adventure and new collection of memories you have to reflect on. Excited for whatever is next for you, man.
Wow! great support in Denmark! So much great footage. Gives us a great insight into the race itself. Very cool, thanks everybody who filmed even if it didn't make it into the video.
Wow you have so many fans and supporters during the race Sage! Beautiful view Btw!!! Thank you for sharing you journey and keeping it “real” YOU! Appreciate 100%! Keep running and keep inspiring!
Great video. Keep chasing that OTQ. You will do it and we will all be watching. Thanks for all the motivation. I am 45 and getting back into the sport after 20 plus years not running. I am now extremely close to breaking 20 minutes at 5k. I owe you allot of thanks for that. Watching your training talks. Buying training plans and getting me back into it. Thanks a million. Keep up the good work.
Honestly huge shout outs to everyone who was able to record Sage and get us this good footage!! I felt like I was almost there watching him! Thanks for doing this!
Dear Sage. I follow you for the last 2-3 years. You are a very honest and real person and i appreciate that very much. YOU DO NOT NEED to explain to any of us way/how things get wrong. they just do. You do an amazing job, and i think that by over "explaining" your failures, you sell your self short to your self (being too focus on your mistakes could be somewhat putting you down) It's not that i shy away from honesty and introspect, but some time less is more. It's perfectly OK not reaching what you expected , this happen, as long as you did your work honestly and diligently. Lots of love Success, Peace and harmony.
You did great. You trained hard and pushed your body to it's limit, both in boston and in copenhagan. No failure in that. I know you have goal times and dreams, and rightly you should as it will keep pushing you to reach for new heights. I love your passion for the sport, your patience, and your positive attitude. Thank you for sharing your experience. Believe in yourself, and maybe something bigger than yourself.
Cameron McKinney I am too busy working on dunking a basketball from the free throw line, then after that I have to try and hit a baseball 450 feet with a wood bat first. Kidding, but I am a bit busy with work and family life to train for anything more than health. I run 15 miles a week if I am lucky. Do not want or care to train for elite status, but just think it would be interesting to see a POV shot of what it’s like to be an elite performer in any sport. For example, I make really good money, but one time saw a bank receipt next to the atm that read a savings account balance of over $900,000. It was fun to see the receipt and kind of imagine what it’s like to look at your account with that much liquid funds.
@@cameronmckinney2090 Dude sage is an elite runner with a lifetime of investment and natural talent. I want to be the best I can be but I'm def not getting to his accolades in this lifetime so I'd love see that POV video
So much admiration for laying it out on the line every time. Go enjoy your mountain season, smash it and get back to the roads when you’re ready 👍 I hope you had an awesome time in Sweden!!
Hi Sage, I'm out of Denver, CO. I just started running about 5 months ago. This crazy idea came to me to do the Estes park marathon. With no experience I didn't know where to start or how to find motivation. Luckily I stumbled across your training talks. Not only does it give me motivation when I dont feel like training but all of the tips have improved my running TREMENDOUSLY! This video further proves how much you love this sport and the people surrounding it. Thank you for the inspiration and keep following your dreams!
I love it that you share your best and your not so good races with everyone. You're an amazing runner!! You're humble which makes me like you even more because I can see that even elites like you are just as human as us mere mortals 😄😄 keep it up!! You've got this!!!!!
You’ll do it, Sage! Like you said, totally realistic goal. And yes - life doesn’t go according to plan! It likes to add lil obstacles here and there...Way to be grateful for what you have and way to KEEP GOING! Can’t wait to see you kick this goal’s a$$ real soon 😊💪
Hey Sage, I've just recently started to watch your videos and all I can say is that I enjoy your easy way to explain things and your approach to the sport. I manage to run 4 to 6 days a week and between 12 to 16 km. Never competed in a race. But I like the sport because it gives me plenty of satisfaction on so many levels. But mainly when I go out running whether I run 10 km or 16 km all I'm thinking about is taking that next step. I don't run because I want to win. I run because I simply love it. So my dear Sage just keep running. If you love running, winning a race is just the cherry on top. Congrats on your valiant effort. Keep healthy and keep smiling.
We're going to have to fly Stefan out to all of Sage's races. Thanks for filming! It's a thrill to watch a pro doing his thing, and heartbreaking to see that lean over the railing after the race.
Keep plugging away Sage! The road to success is always under construction. Song suggestions: Ride like the wind- Christopher Cross, Run like hell - Pink Floyd, Gimme some water-Eddie Money.
You are doing great and I appreciate your attitude. You are also helping a lot of people including me when I was running marathons. I counted on you a lot even though you do not know me. Keep it up!
First of all congratulations on your 17th in Copenhagen, it's a great deal and a real achievement. Make no mistake, first and foremost you succeeded at a great event and gave everything you had to give on the spot. That being said I know you had your eyes on an even bigger goal but because you already have the right mindset and you are more than capable, I'm sure you'll succeeded eventually. This video is exactly how you make a freaking lemonade when life serves you lemons. :) Again, great effort, congrats, keep up the good work and keep them videos coming!! :) :)
Much Respect Sage, i just ran my first half (thanks for all the tips, vids etc on your channel btw!) and anyone that dares to critique anything about your results clearly isnt a runner...and trust me, you showing "failures" makes us the amateurs, recreational runners feel closer to you, the elite just because of the human experience that endurance runs are all about!!! we all sweat, get tired, think about a lot of things when pain hits our body, and yeah, once the run ends we get inspiration, be it of a PR or a below expectations run...so, thank u for sharing this, your world and your love for the run
Definitely the best videos from any athlete I've seen come from Sage. The guy puts it all out there. Failures and success. This particular video captures the emotional swings of disappointment and forward facing positivity. Such an inspiration but at the same time so relatable. He's an elite but suffers like us all. Injury and disappointment get us all but it's how we move on an motivate ourselves. By the way, 'the seeker' by The Who might just suit you for your next 'training talk intro'.
Don't be hard on yourself, you had not such long time to recover from jet lag. Keep it up, you'll do it. It was very kind of all the people who film you, so nice. Good luck. :)
Hey sage, I just started into serious running because of all your training talks! Thanks! Been following all your social medias to keep me updated about your tips about road running and mountain running. So far, I've ran and made few PBs and I'm about to start into a competitive mountain race soon! Love your passions and enthusiasms! Love from Malaysia!
Tough break Sage. I was extremely confident for you this time around. Keep the head up, I am sure this training will benefit the rest of your season. Thanks to everyone for tge footage.
You're tough, dude! You ran so much of the race TOTALLY ALONE......that by itself made it that much harder. You've 'got the goods' it's a matter now of finding the right day. Bravo!
New to running...at 45yrs old. Throw in Costa Rica mountain hills and mega humidity and yeah going slow. But appreciate your advice and the fact you dont eat meat. I'm not opposed to it but found when I didnt eat meat my joints and digestion improved. So far this past year zero issues maintaining weight and the fruit here is pretty darn good so encouraged to see a real athlete get by without the carne. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Loving the honesty and transparency. You'll definitely get your OTQ, we're all supporting you! I totally understand the part about smashing training and then laying an egg during the race, that was my London Marathon training cycle and race. We know you can do it! Looking forward to seeing your videos and races from the summer and mountain ultra season.
Just keep staying positive Sage ! I've been following you for a while now, and I'm always routing for you . Hoka is lucky to have such a great athlete/brand ambassador . Hope to meet you one day . Cheers my man.
Keep going man you show me that it isn't a straight line to success. it happens to the best of us I ended my season one minute slower than I started the season.
You got so much balls to show us your failures. Don’t stop chasing after your goals and sharing your journey here on UA-cam. We understand that life isn’t flawless like it seems on social media. Your running clips were awesome! 🙂

Sage had to run by himself pretty much the whole race. That's not easy.
Thanks to everybody who filmed!!!
Man, your sense of accountability is so admirable. You inspire so many people around the world. I hope you can get your OTQ!
I think it was Churchill who said success is continuing from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm ;n) Love your drive and positive attitude and look forward to following your trail season Sir, rock on...
Andrew Shortt if that is truly Churchill then he must have been senile by that point.
I believe it has been attributed to a few different famous folks. It simply means don't give up until you get there ;n)
Andrew Shortt yeah but it doesn't include any notion of eventually succeeding. It really sounds like someone making mistakes and not learning.
I think it may be a 'the joy is in the journey' sentiment.
Dude try covering atleast half thw distance that sage ran and you will need a adult diaper
I've read "fail" in the title, but I don't see any loser, I see an warrior! Congrats, keep on going, never give up!

Note! I made those comments before you got to that part of the video.
Badass, brother. Thanks for being real, my friend. Best of luck moving forward.
Your "many minutes later" is my "over an hour later".... rock on Sage!
Astounds me how much in no man's land you were.
I can't imagine running that hard that long without a wind break thrown in every now and then from a group
Yeah that really surprised me as well.
I'm no where near that fast, but I am always solo like that as my pace is just too fast for the main pack and too slow for the front pack. And yeah, it is tough.
Exactly! Nobody to chase, nobody to push. Makes it much harder, indeed!

Injury and disappointment get us all but it's how we move on an motivate ourselves. By the way, 'the seeker' by The Who might just suit you for your next 'training talk intro'.
Chasing down that dream!!! Keep running Sage!
You Will achieve your goal sooon 😍🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻
Don't be hard on yourself, you had not such long time to recover from jet lag. Keep it up, you'll do it. It was very kind of all the people who film you, so nice. Good luck. :)
Hey sage, I just started into serious running because of all your training talks! Thanks! Been following all your social medias to keep me updated about your tips about road running and mountain running. So far, I've ran and made few PBs and I'm about to start into a competitive mountain race soon! Love your passions and enthusiasms! Love from Malaysia!
Loved this footage of seeing you dig deep. The grind is real. You have no idea how inspiring it is to watch your training.
YOU DA MAN SAGE NEVER GIVE UP
Tough break Sage. I was extremely confident for you this time around.
Keep the head up, I am sure this training will benefit the rest of your season.
Thanks to everyone for tge footage.
Du ziehst es durch und das zählt. Mach weiter so, deine Videos sind unheimlich inspirierend für mich 💪🏼
Wish you were running Grandmas Marathon! That's my next race!
You inspire me to keep chipping away to get a BQ. Best channel on UA-cam!
Congratulations!!!!! Very good!! It was a hot weather day! This is not a failure! Nothing to be ashamed of!!
Youre an inspiration! You did not fail you just became stronger. Thanks for sharing:)
For whatever reason, after the ladybug close-up, your monologue made me think I was watching you in the movie "Waking Life".
Sage you are a huge inspiration man, that's all I can say... Keep it up!
Were still proud of you sage.
Great vid Sage, really enjoy your debriefs and race reports. The best part? Being thankful for the opportuninty. Keep it up, will be watching from NZ

Just keep staying positive Sage ! I've been following you for a while now, and I'm always routing for you . Hoka is lucky to have such a great athlete/brand ambassador . Hope to meet you one day . Cheers my man.
Don't give up Sage! You are a tough guy!
keep pushing, you will get there!!!!
Great video Sage. Have you considered teaming up with some guys who are also going for the OTQ and working together in a race?
Koos Busters Yes. As long as each person has paid their fee and is wearing a bib and the group is not causing problems for other runners.
Well done Sage you are the hero.
I believe in you! You are a great inspiration! Recover well and then attack that goal head on!!! All the best!
Lookin' strong, that's for sure!
You've inspired a lot of ppl... around the world.
Keep going man you show me that it isn't a straight line to success. it happens to the best of us I ended my season one minute slower than I started the season.
Thank you for sharing your ups and downs. It gives me hope.
