Looks good! Could have also made an adapter plate, 1/2" plate screwed to the mast with old holes, and new fixture into the plate. Ideas are easy to come by, your way worked well!
I realize this is almost 3 years old. Dude. Use a carabiner through a belt loop, to keep the extension cord from falling. That way the belt loop takes the force, not your neck, incase you lose your balance. ....stay safe. Love your work!
Heh mate, been enjoying your video's for a while now but just found this one right after I went through the exact same thing. Don't like going up the mast without a safety. Thanks for your channel. Cheers from Aus, hope you make it here one day.
They were already there? Shit, I don't know. Less holes in the boat the better. Plus, have you ever tried drilling through 1/4" aluminum while suspended 50' in the air? Not fun.
Sv Zingaro He means in the plastic base, you could have just drilled two new holes into the base of the new light that's matched the old base. No drilling into the boat required.
Ah. It needs three. The other one had recessed female threads in an aluminum base - it should withstand a blow. I didn't trust this polymer with only two attachment points. That's a great idea though.
I know you already have it mounted.... but why not make a bracket that fits the old mounting holes drill a hole in the bracket to match the wire hole then mount the tri light to the bracket? Then take it up and mount it to the mast. Fair winds and following seas bro!
Hi, thanks for posting this, I bought the same light from Stecktronics , thanks to your video, it seems like what I needed. I have not stepped my mast yet to be able to use the light. I was wondering how happy you are with that light now that you have used it for awhile. Any issues? Thanks!Kevin
You don't need a buddy to belay you, just self belay using a grigri. I'd recommend going to a climbing centre and explain to an instructor that you need to know how to self belay and they will show you how to get everything right.
Hi, thanks for posting this vid very helpful as I'm doing the same install. Do you have any interference with VHF antenna being so close to your LED tri light, is the antenna vhf only or shared with AIS? Those mast steps save a fortune, my mast hast to be unstepped.
I had my own thoughts about just drilling the same hole pattern as the old base plate, and forget about routing out the key...but the more interesting question is how you got up the mast without any help @10:55 ! Ahh, you have mast steps! LOL
Cool video. Helpful. I am looking at replacing my masthead tricolor as well. Mine quit after Irma passed thru the keys. When I look online they seem to run from 100 to 200. None look like yours. All are led. I think u mentioned yours was 450. Anything I should think about that lead you to your choice of light?
For some reason these questions always get skipped. When I buy my cat eyes gonna share every frikin price for everything. Not sure why folks guard it so much but its their option. Must respect. But this cat here is da shit. Both the cat and the cat. Great channel bro.
i came from the future to let you know that this upgrade is ok but who cares because you will fall in love with one gorgeous german girl and break a boat in half in near future. whatever you do with this info, dont change anything, its happy ending. :)
hey sailor, thanks for your vids. done the same but dont find a reasonably priced switch (50bucks too much) to toggle nav, anchor strobe...what switch do you have? thanks...
damm, I could have acted as a safety!! What is the life expectancy on the LED's ? Yeah, you got your light angles right .. 😛 I would have recommended resealing the top whip on the VHF ant as the whip mounts onto the top of a 36 inch length copper wire coil (comtained inside the cylinder) before terminating into the coax connection. Water intrusion where the whip screws into thw top of the coil is the Achilles Heal of that design. I think I just got enuf of a glimpse to see where there is enuf existing corrosion now, where the whip screws on, so that it might be water tight in its present form. If you get signal issues with that radio, this is the first place to look for "the" problem. Okay ?? 😛
Regarding the VHF antenna, seek out LMR400 coax when you next give it attention, if you have not already done so. It's low loss on that band will enhance the performance of the radio and always pay attention to corrosion on the antenna / base. You never know when that radio will become your lifeline.
Could you not have just taken the old base cleaned all the fittings out of it for the old bulb turned it upside down and then mounted the new light to the flat base which is already gonna screw into the two existing holes ? Cause it already lines up ?
Good question. I could have just put in an LED bulb, but a new masthead light is much better. Those bulbs shake around, and burn out. Has happened to the running lights already. This was really the only way.
Danny B I wasn't in an armchair and I wasn't being critical I was just thinking that you could have just taken the old base And mount the new light to it and then it's easy cause the existing holes are already in line with the old base . But Fuckbutts like you gotta start something cause that's what you do so I won't comment anymore so that we can hear your sage advice so type away
The key is to insure proper facing colors. I would have just redrilled the holes and plugged the unused ones as necessary. They should have left the drilling to you. Dumb move on the part of the manufacturer.
Glad to see you got it in the water finally.
You don't even know. I wanted to take it out so bad. It was tough to cut her all up and keep her at the dock. She's much happier now.

Good idea bud!
SSSHHHH , The professor is teaching, nice video
Hi. Nice video, even more so that you had the Team Rubicon shirt.

Looked like fun!
LED good stuff
Interesting….and challenging :-)
Why didn't you just drill two identical holes into the base and seal the original 3 holes?
They were already there? Shit, I don't know. Less holes in the boat the better. Plus, have you ever tried drilling through 1/4" aluminum while suspended 50' in the air? Not fun.

@@thelastpirate a small round aluminum plate that will fit in the base of your new LED light they will hold the whole plastic Bass Down..
@@thelastpirate >>> Difficulty drilling holes while at the top of the mast?
Oh, come on, Jim! Take one for the team!
😊😊😊
Phosphorescent bulb ... hihihi ... sometimes James you crack me up :))) All the love anyway! :)

FWIW, I was thinking the same thing....

Great JOB
Take the base from the old one and drill through it and make an adapter
Hey, now you got me wanting to upgrade my stuff. do you have a link or who makes that light and what not
Forgot to put that in the description, thanks. www.stecktronics.com/mob/t/product-gen_mob_t.php?cat=Navigation%20Lights
Good job!

good job!!! where do you buy your ligth?
Sorry, this is almost a year old now....How did you connect the wires? Just crimp them together, or solder? (I need to do the same thing on my boat.)
Nice boat. Based on the condition of your boat what would be a reasonable price range for a boat like yours
For some reason these questions always get skipped. When I buy my cat eyes gonna share every frikin price for everything. Not sure why folks guard it so much but its their option. Must respect. But this cat here is da shit. Both the cat and the cat. Great channel bro.
It is a homemade boat without a design pedigree so Think cheaper. My guess is a fair price for that boat is 20k.
20k is a ridiculously low price. thats just bonkers. you have no idea what you're talking about.
Mike Albanese 65k

Separate switches for each one. Come with the panel. Easy for me to split it.
OK....good tip.
Can;t wait to see ur toilet video.....

Hahaha. You're the man. Will do.
don't throw away the old fitting I'm sure someone somone will give you a few $ for it to put new led bulb's in

I would have made an adapter plate out of aluminum

I think you did a great job. It is always easy for people to be critical from an arm chair. You did it your way. Always the best way..

Four hundred dollars....I'll keep my incandescent lol
phosphorescent bulb lol

too much detail about his problem and not enough about how to wire a light, just saying.
