In this video I teach you how to photograph a step and repeat. There is no correct way to do it, but there are some pitfalls to be aware of, and even some things you could do wrong. In this video, I show you how I set up lights, dial in my settings, and troubleshoot different variables. In the end, you want to be a versatile event photographer that can adapt to all sorts of events.

Great video. I find that people always put their backs against the backdrop just like in this video and I have to tell them to step up to get separation.

These videos are very interesting and inspiring; showing you at work. Like the one previously where you were shooting in a bar with dark walls and cieling. Both then and in this video you use a diffusor cap. In what situations do you use a diffusor cap? When do you not use one?
Great question. The short answer is that if I am unable to bounce my strobe, I use one. I always prefer bouncing my light. I have a short video on the differences between the two in my event playlist.

Same distance every time. Same direction and supporting light sources. TTL reading different clothing colours could generate a different flash strength? Why not use manual here and have a consistent flash power? Curious.
For me a reminder that going full pro isn't all as fancy as UA-cam photographers often paint it, I think after a night of photographing people in front of a backdrop full of logos I wouldn't want to spend any time at all editing these pictures if I could avoid it - or get an assistant to do it. Maybe you enjoy it more, but I'd be interested to hear if dull jobs suck creativity out of you, or actually inspire you to do something creative immediately after? I know from my past job that I couldn't do anything artistic anymore in my free time and wanted nothing to do with photos and editing, a huge factor why I dropped out of it eventually.
It isn't. These type of photos are actually very easy to edit. Event photography is very much a job, but it is actually a lot less draining than most types of professional work, which is why I moved into it years ago. For me, once I separated my professional work from my personal work, I was a lot more at peace.
and btw, yeah this is what a lot of pro work actually looks like. It's not glamorous at all. That's probably why this video is currently rated at number 9 out of the last 10 videos I published. Lets see if that changes, though.

Ya I see these wedding photographers on UA-cam and I’m like must be a grind…and it’s funny they show the best parts like shooting the couple in between ceremony and reception at a beautiful location… I can’t imagine the stress of getting all the expected shots (first look, bridal party getting ready, details’ shots, grooms getting ready, and groups/family, etc) while dealing with a possible bridezilla, drunk guests, etc.

They're either rented it supplied by the venue. To be honest I'm not sure. I've shot two events a year for this client for something like 8 years now and the lights have always varied. I usually just work with or around them. One thought I've had is to invest in my own continuous lights and adding them to my services. Lmk if you have any other questions.

Well I came here for tips. I had planned on using ocf w softboxes. But now I'm rethinking it based on this video but I would ave to purchase leds. Would you say my original plan would work fine also?
I’m finding the advice in your videos super helpful! I’m about to photograph a step and repeat, out of my comfort zone compared to what I normally shoot. I only have a speedlight for lighting and was thinking of putting it in a soft box. Setting will be outside around golden hour in a tent. Would you think the speedlight in the soft box would do the trick with the combination of ambient light? I believe the tent ceiling will be clear.
As it sounds like you know, there is no one size fits all for these, lighting wise. Personally I try to go with the least setup possible. Typically the simplest answer works best for a variety of reasons. If the tent is white, you will be able to bounce your flash off of a rear corner and get a better spread than a softbox. I have never heard of a clear tent ceiling. I have seen a black one (disappointing to me as a photographer), but almost always they are white.
As a starting point, my advice is to dial in your manual exposure to about -1, then set your flash in TTL. If the backdrop is mostly white, you may want to consider going to +1 with TTL and go from there. I hope my thoughts help. Back to work for me!

Hello I have a question, I just start with this stand and repeat events, what I have right now is the Ne-weer 4 strobe light and a soft box, I will cover a small event do you think this will good for start? it is a strobe a good option or I have to have a constant light?
Hi Mik, I will have an event in 2 weeks, a beauty contest for women of all ages. It will be a big event with people from different countries. The shots will be of the contestants on stage, everybody in the venue and some posed shots. Could you please help me? I only have a full-frame camera and 2 lenses, an 85mm 1.4 and a 35mm 1.8 and I will not have any others... What would you use for most of the event, the 85 or the 35?? My problem is that my first event was cancelled and it will be my first now! Thank you so much! Thank you for your great vídeos too!
To be honest, I would rent a 70-200.
are you shooting in RAW? JPEG? Both
For the events I used in the video, I shoot both. I hand off the JPEG files as soon as I finish so that they can project them both on screen during the Lunch / Dinner portion of the events. Because of this, it is important I get things right exposure wise.
