    Just want to clarify for anyone wanting to follow the steps shown… you should save the disk image to a hard drive that is separate from the one you will make bootable. Cloning the disk image to the drive it is on will leave you with no disk image and no clone.

    Gotta love that SuperDuper. Been in my stash of needed utility's for over 8 years now.

      Saved me so many times.. I should actually go buy the license now that I think about it.

    How do you restore a Mac through carbon copy cloner to the new Mac where you can't take out the SSD or hard drive.

  • @Pancajayna

    Super Duper no longer free. They keep telling you that your settings aren't correct and to choose "smart update" and when you choose that, they say that is from the paid version....

    I've used Superduper for 13 years. Ever since I upgraded my mac to Catalina, I can no longer boot the computer from the clone it creates : ( : \

    I had an issue when I cloned it that means the OS creates a duplicate virtual drive everytime I reboot.
    I can send that drive to the bin, but it will create it again everytime I reboot.
    I used Super Duper to clone and I'm using 2 x 1TB Crucial MX500 SSDs in a Mid 2012 Macbook pro.

    If you tear down and rebuild and get a colors all strange on the screen This might be due to PRAM and re installing the OS. I thought I messed up the computer when removing the graphics card but it was only something missing with the cloned drive. If anyone has the same issue it might be solved with PRAM reset and insall new OS.

    Have you enabled trim support on the drive? This is turned off by default for non Apple ssd. This can cause slow write speeds if not enabled

    • @messing-with-computers
      @messing-with-computers  4 роки тому

      Yup - have trim enabled and the write performance is still poor. I should clarify that not only is it poor, but it is erratic as well. Hypothesis is that some parts of the drive still work great, others are completely shot.

    The "2011 iMac", whether 21 or 27" need a heat sensor. The 2012 doesn't but 2011 does. Apple has documentation regarding this. Also check with OWC

    Why exactly are you fascinated about older tech? Just curious, otherwise a fan of your channel.

      What can I say.. I have always like tinkering. Tinkering with brand new tech = very expensive! Tinkering with 5-7 year old tech? Cheap hobby!

      I accidentally added a firmware lock on my computer, I have administrator access but I don’t remember the firmware lock. Would this process allow me to clone the boot up drive and add an SSD to my system without having to know the firmware password? Im more or less afraid of the current hard drive failing and not being able to add a new drive without that password.

      @@chriscastillo5736 - from my experience the firmware lock will stay.. even with a new install. It follows the motherboard (I actually bought one on accident that had a firmware lock during one of my repair attempts) and can not be worked around in the 2009-2010 or later models. Basically I had to buy a new motherboard.. so now I have 3! The original that was broken, the replacement that was firmware locked and the third that was a good one. What a mess. Luckily you should be able to get a motherboard for ~$30 for these machines. Easiest fix.

      @Curtis Gross I’m not trying to get rid of the firmware lock, just add a new bootable drive. I already have admin access, I just don’t want to lose functionality of the computer if the current OEM drive stops working. It’s a 2011 21.5” iMac. I’ll give the motherboard thing a try and see if I can find any for that price. Like you, I like to tinker.

      @messing-with-computers  4 роки тому

      @@chriscastillo5736 Gotcha - I would think it would keep all the functionality and your admin access. It does, from what I can tell, a complete copy... everything.

    Did you enable TRIM for your SSD?

    Thanks for the super helpful videos Curtis!!
    Want to let you know there is a workaround for the HDD fan issue so you don't have to put an HDD back in just to prevent the fan spinning up (or use a software solution). The solution is using a SATA Y splitter cable to connect your SSD (the unused end of the splitter is covered with insulating tape). I just replaced my HDD in my 2011 27" iMac with a SSD, and honestly I was surprised that this works but it does, nice and quiet. (credit to John Dingo-Fox ua-cam.com/video/pMsk1o1W2B0/v-deo.html).
    I'm waiting for my 610M to arrive shortly, then will be using your videos to help me get the new GPU set up... thanks again!

      @@messing-with-computers Thought I'd say thanks again, was able to successfully install a k1100m (bought a 610m but was sent a k1100 instead), and your videos were a huge help. I also ended up installing MacFanControl since I want to see how hot the GPU is running and afraid that I might overheat the card, so using the sata splitter cable might be all for not.
