The first step is to recognize our mistakes, but it is not something easy. Good job and good luck for everyone in this new year!

Hey Mari! It truly is refreshing to see you out there in the language learning community on UA-cam and amongst the other polyglots as you keep it honest, refreshing and real. Rather than trying to compete, out do and create unrealistic expectations - you're about the learning & not "creating content" . I really enjoy following you because you always keep me inspired and on track with my language learning process. Lesson #1 totally resonates with me! So true! Many thanks!

I had fallen out of love with learning Italian as I wasn’t making as much progress as I hoped but this has given me motivation to start again!

Great that you are sharing frankly what hasn't worked. All the people who have become incredibly successful, famous and impressive polyglots have surely made lots of mistakes along the way, even if it's not obvious from the videos which are made in order to be published.

I feel like we need to normalise learning languages slowly. Everyone must not learn a new language every three months. I mean. Right now, I am 21 and even if it takes me like seven years to learn a language (which is grossly exagerated), I will have learned 4 languages by the time I am fifty and that is a great achievement. I don't really stress myself when I am learning languages. I just focus on being consistent and I know that eventually, it will pay off.

I LOVE THIS!! YES, we definetly need to normalise taking your time to enjoy the process! it is so much more fun that way! Thanks for writing this it really makes me feel like I'm not the only slow learner in the world!

Loved your thoughts about setting language goals
    + 2020
Yeah, 2020 wasn't the best year to achieve all of our goals, it was so unpredictable, but I also believe that many lessons can be learned from this year

I am not learning French because of the hobby. I am learning French because I want to work for the federal government of Canada. However, I am learning Japanese for fun. I find French not to be as interesting but Japanese language is very interesting and exciting.

It really makes all the difference when you have passion for a language... I used to drag learning Dutch when it was a need but now I love it soo much that I do it for fun! your interest in a language also changes over the years, when we are the most motivated, I have found we learn the most!

I know the feeling. When I moved to Germany 3 years ago, I wanted to learn Chinese for fun. But I had to learn German to be able to live and work here comfortably. However, after starting to learn German, I started liking it as well. I feel like for us language enthusiasts, if we start learning a language for like business or work related reasons, it might not be very interesting at the beginning. But later, our love for languages just takes over and we start loving that language as well. Has this happened to you with French?

When I see you with the wine glass I think "hmm yes sounds like a good idea" 😂
Only compare yourself with your previous self 👍 So long as you are happy and eating ok then you are successful 😊
