from my point of view: ps2/xbox -> ps3/xbox360 = huge improvement from all aspects. ps3/xbox360 -> ps4/xbox1 = not so many improvement. mostly improve just on the graphics.
Well you have to consider the fact that current gen (PS4, Xbox One) come with many extra features and options. Also, when you already have an astoundingly good engine on last gen, it can be much harder to develop the next console with big improvements in all areas. One of the best things about current gen is 1080p and 60fps, making the game and console itself, run a whole lot smoother.
