Love how in all your videos/explanations you use easy-to-understand language and examples. You really demystified Hegel for me, and you continue to do so to other topics with every video. We don't deserve you Greggy B.
Thnku Dr Sadler, this video helped me a lot in completing my presentation, " Rachels ' arguments against cultural relativism " , lots of love from India........🥰
I sometimes wonder if these naive relativist views, like the relativity of truth argument that is usually dismissed as self defeating or the argument you discuss in the video, are just made up by those opposed to relativism and not genuinely held by anyone, because they can be so easily dismantled. But then, as you say, I remember that there are people who still think the Earth is flat, and so I am reminded not to assume too much. Thank you for your video, appreciated as always!
I honestly think many people hold both views to be true depending on the subject. In my experience, people that have poor or no reasons for their views on some moral issue will say moral judgements are relative stance. If they believe to have good reasons on some other issue, they will be more likely to say that something can be objectively wrong.
@@GregoryBSadler They definitely do, but not all relativist views are equal. Some more refined and specific views (whether epistemic or ethical) that can be labelled as relativistic are more defensible than the naive ones, such as the 'cultures are relative' or 'truth is relative', which are the usual targets for charlatans attacking postmodernism at large, etc. It is holding these naive and obviously wrong views that I find baffling and almost impossible in good faith (at least by philosophers).
@@austinm419 You're right. I should have clarified that I had in mind philosophers who engage in debates about relativism, not the general public. I remember engaging a visiting American student (I'm based in Europe) about moral relativism a few years back. She held some version of this cultural/moral relativism and I was trying my best to play Socrates and tangle her in contradictions. She was not pleased when she had to agree that, in light of her relativism, she cannot call Nazis or holocaust evil... Fun pub night. She was an example of those who have good intentions but do not really think things through.
Hello Dr Sadler, thanks for the videos as always. I was wondering: what are your thoughts on the Israeli - Palestinian conflict and the current annexation plans. ( I know it is not related but I am curious to know, as an Israeli and as a proponent of Palestinian liberation and of ending this brutal occupation and boycotting the settlements). Thanks for the videos anyway.

There are lots of people who express relativist views.

@@noname_whatsoever Well, then you want to go to those philosophers who baffle you and ask them directly about their views, I would imagine

Whaaaaat…The medievals knew the earth wasn’t flat? Well now, I really need to go back and read them huh 🤔
Of course they did. They knew a lot
Relativism kills.
Thou shalt not kill.
You look like you play dungeons and dragons.
And what's that supposed to mean
