  • Tibetan Monks painstakingly spend five days t0 design and place tiny grains of sand to create a beautiful work of temporary art. On day 6 they scoop up the sand and place it in a body of water, releasing the energy of the project back into the community.

This is a true example of precision in action. The entire mandala is an expression of their collective conscious in the sense that not one of them would be able to create the whole thing on their own. It's an example of the Buddhist concept of dependent arising. I'm overtly attempting to collect videos of creations and ideas of this caliber on my channel as well.

Good going. The more one does to honor this being in the present the lower our group entropy becomes. More connection, more understanding, more love.

I hate how there are comments saying it was a waste of time...you can't tell people what to do with their lives. If you want to do something it is not a waste, it is part of their religion and it is not up to you to disrespect that. They made a piece of beautiful artwork, but it would get destroyed anyway, it represents impermenance, and if you see it as a waste of time you obviously cannot see the world as it truly is.

This is an excellent video, it shows all aspects of the making of this mandala. I want to see what happens with the sand afterward, the offering to the water. I think that in some ways the time lapse makes the viewer loose the meditative quality of the task.

As it is said emptiness is form and form is emptiness. The mandala in the video in the mind of monks are already no more. This form here is just an empty of value, bunch of sands. Outside educational sense, it doesn't have much value to the monk and it doesn't exist for them.

Glad you like it. Yes I see what you mean about losing the meditative quality, if I had it to do over again maybe slow the cut aways of the monks dropping the sand on the mandala to slow mo would accomplish that. We missed the feeding into the water. Bummer

    Life for a Buddha and Bodhisattva i n c l u d e s death.There are no colours.The colours bring us joy and peace of mind,but then the migrating monks dissolve the most beautiful,accomplished sand mandalas and distribute the tainted sand in the ocean or wind...t o t a l l y non attached..and they go the next town or country ,performing their divine magic and artistic accomplishment again...and again leave without leaving traces .MEMENTO MORI is a c o n s t a n t part of Buddhist life..FLIP THE SWITCH so to say....LIFE LIKE A T A P D A N C E W I T H D E A T H....open and novus/nova like a toddler and always emotionally detatched from but curious about THE NEXT DAY...

impermanence-is much desired/expected by our Ego-these sand mandalas which are alike "group project-efforts" are made with great care/devotion/& total commitment for the sake of teaching us-to let go of Ego-IT IS: having created something supposedly from what is the proudest creativity within ourselves-then just like THAT! Letting it go-in return: We free ourselves! impermanence-the expectation of it to REIGN-Is what holds us PRISONERS OF EGO-by letting it go-we are made to return to true SELF.
