We lived in Ipswich and went to Felixstowe often. I remember everything in the video, including the boating pool, as we had a model yacht and used to take it there. One day a kid fell in and my dad jumped in to rescue him - but the kid's mother shouted and screamed at my dad - not a word of thanks!!!
Good video of the lovely seaside resort of Felixstowe, but I'm surprised that you walked past the Fludyers Hotel without even a mention or any images of this very popular attraction of Felixstowe, it's a super place to stop for a coffee or beer, & serve excellent food, with a lovely view.

Great video. I spent two weeks there almost ever summer, from 1965 to 1977. This place has changed quite a bit and I feel sad that so much of past has gone. The pier was an icon for me, but although the new pier is impressive, I miss the old one. I am sure the old one could have been renovated. Fond memories of going to the Pavilion with my family to watch the wrestling. Seeing stars of that era like, Jackie Pallow, Mick McManus, Kendo Nagasaki, Catweazle and many others. Manning's Amusements was, and still is, The Felixstowe for me. I do remember the fair ground attractions in the middle and the Big Dipper, although I don't remember it working. The Crooked house, when I was there, had a cakewalk at the exit that threw you back and forth and up and down. It was brilliant and quite scary. I don't think health and safety would allow it these days. The Cavendish, was quite a posh place, as I remember. From there, if you head down the road away from the seafront, towards the old station, you pass by a cafe that has been closed since the 70's and still has old net curtains hanging up. It is like a time capsule and I don't know why it's not been used since. It is a little bit spooky, if you peer through the window. The road just past the holiday caravan park, used to a dirt track that led all the way to Trimley Saint Martin. There was another big fort there, like Landguard Fort and I had many an adventure searching the ruins and finding bullet shells and stuff abandoned since the second world war. My Mum and Dad would take us there for a picnic and some peace and quite. It has all long gone, with the expansion of the docks. Anyway, sorry for going on and on. But I love Felixstowe and watching videos like yours bring the memories flooding back. Thanks again.

Thanks Tim. It brought back memories. I was born in Felixstowe in 1949 and lived there for 8 years. You did not show the old LNER Felix Hotel up on the cliff. My Grandfather was manager there in the 50s before it was sold to Fisons and later turned into luxury apartments. My grandparents retired in Felixstowe and I used to go back to stay with them in school holidays. I have n't been there for 40 years, you could walk to the end of the pier then. Back in the 50s boat men on the beach used to shout 'Round the bay in the motorboat' or 'Trip round the lightship'. It is a shame they filled in the boating lake. Had many a nice time on the paddle boats and sailing model boats with my Dad in the 50s. Further along before you got to Mannings amusement park there was a roller skating rink and an electric track with 6 different coloured trains with bells kiddies could ride. One summer holiday in the 60s I worked in a slot machine arcade at Mannings Amusement park, unjamming the machines mostly and helping people. It is a huge shame they pulled down the wooden rollercoaster. Today it would have made good money as a retro ride. They are hugely popular as very few are left in the world. It could be seen from every vantage point along the sea front. A lot has changed, not everything for the better, but I am glad to see they are trying to keep the sea front gardens in good shape.They are a treasure and a true link with Felixstowe's past.
Thanks for the video. My 87 year old Mother grew up going to the beach with her family . They took the train from Ipswich. They had a tiny little day use beach building. I see those are still there. She took me over in 1960. I was three years old. I remember the fish and chips. I remember parts of the sea front garden. She talked about how upset all the kids were when the beach was closed during WW2. She passed away last year. So wonderful to see her old stomping grounds.
Great video. As a lad back in xmas 81 my pal and I got racers for Christmas. We literally cycled to Felixstowe from Ipswich on Christmas day, we cycled to Landguard Fort where we dug (scraped) in the soil with our bike pumps looking for war bullets! True story. Ironically my bike was purchased from Felixstowe Market. My family had a beach hut not far from the Cavendish, we were No 5, Titchys Hut (my nickname).
I really enjoyed this one. I used to go with my grandfather to Felixstowe in the 70s. It was always the Bawdsey End first to get some fish then down to the seafront. I remember a tea room which looks to me like it could have been the Cavendish, it seemed very regal and old world even then. I'm glad to see that Mannings is still there but no roller coaster or dodgems maybe itll get a revival it was my second favourite after Yarmouth. As for the pier I have sad memories of an incident involving a large bouncy castle inflatable whale getting blown off and out to sea with kids on board.
Fantastic video. So many memories in everything shown. The Marlborough. I use to be a kitchen porter at 14. The pier. I worked on the slide (the slippery dip) in a booth collecting money. 25p for 3 slides. Girls came to my booth. Mannings, I was a dj in the night club, top floor. You missed a huge historical fact though. the fact that king edward viii miss simpson stayed in one of the historical buildings you almost showed during the period of abdication. Never been to Felixstowe, although we have seen Felixstowe many times while on the Ferry. Next time we will definitely visit Felixstowe. Thanks again for the beautiful walk.

Felixstowe is a brilliant place to take the children I have many happy memory's of my childhood and then taken my children there when they were little my children loved going to the fort at land guard which I would recommend as it is interesting to see how life was back in the day .
I used to live in Cavendish Road in the early 70's and the boating lake was also popular with the model fraternity. There was a golf mini-putt, and lots of traditional seaside diversions. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you Tim for a trip down memory lane. I used to canoe on the broads as a child. Felixstowe certainly has changed since I last went there. A school friend lived in a wooden river house with her mother and sister. The ceiling was quite high in the large living room. Brick houses on the river banks may have proved too heavy, plus if floods occurred it was cheaper and quicker to rebuild. The little wooden houses you mentioned are originally from Norfolk and Suffolk. You'll find them dotted around various parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, Kent and other seaside/riverside places. (English) and Dutch people took the idea to America. Hence why you'll find Yarmouth, Bristol and many more English town names in America. Probably New England. Pumpkins also originated from England. English monks took them, or the seeds to America centuries ago.
No sand on that beach when I was a kid 1950’s 1960’s. Used to do our ballet recital at the spa. As the coast goes toward the docks. Past the huts. There was ministry of defense property. Lots of stuff left from world war 2. Interesting place. Think it’s gone now.

Filixstowe, is really an awesome seafront !! It has a long coastline that offers a lot of adventures such as,fishing,boating and swimming.It is an important port because big ships enter its coast,either for resting or loading and unloading and for connecting to other parts of the world.The coastal region is lush and green and very fertile because of the presence of several types of plants and trees found in the area.Its inland is also long and broad and appears beautiful with its most beautiful gardens and large grasslands.Its coastal region also offers certain historical spots and several places of entertainments such as snack and food centres,restaurants and bars, where one can relax and enjoy the beauty of the beach.For this reason,it is an important tourist centre where people come to enjoy its beauty and to make explorations ! I have such fond memories of Felixstowe camping holidays at pewitt camping site buying pippa dolls in the toy store in the town and the camping shop was always a place to visit on visits to Felixstowe as well as cordys cakes on the seafront I could go on for hours
I visit here often as its in my door step. Even proposed to my wife at Laungaurd as the sun set. I take my kid to the fort too, its lovely. Great video mate
Oh I just fell into this video...what a joy. When we married (50 yrs ago this year) we had to wait a few months for our house, so we rented a caravan at Landguard caravan site. I took holidays in Felixstowe with my grandparents I one visited RAF Bawdsey with my grandfather who had met Robert Watson-Watt in the war when he was a range finder with the Royal Artillery anti-aircraft units in London.
Never been to Felixstow, always thought it was just a port, however last month I had to go there for work. Its so beautiful, a few weeks ago I had to just North of it to Alderburgh, I have never been to such a sweet place, cant wait till we can get out again with the caravan.

I used to spend a lot of time there. Never had time to really look around. I know all the pubs tho lol You missed Fludgers and the Alex, both very notable and enjoyable. I am going back in a few weeks to have a good look around. The Fishermans lovely pub and food.

In the summer, we used the ferry between Harwich and hook of Holland and whilst that’s a huge ferry, it’s nothing compared to those container shops we sailed past in the dock at Felixstowe!
Just watching your walk round Felixstowe. I remember going to stay with my aunt in about 1954. All I can remember is she lived in a white-washed house set back and somewhat hidden down a short path to it (it may have been a bungalow or a one storey place). I think it was above a bakery (remember the lovely smells) and there was a peacock in one of the gardens, which made a terrible noise early in the morning. I think there was a big, old (orange brick?) house next to her house and a footpath next to that which went down to the shops/promenade(?). I must have been 7 or 8 and remember clearly my younger sister and I meeting an American girl and siblings(?) on the path (I think her name was Renée Laroux (pronounced not spelt, Im sure, like that!). We used to go there a lot and spent our time talking to an old man. We always thought he was a tramp but might have been doing some poor old chap a grave injustice!! He used to sit on a bench and we knew him as 'Fred Soup'. There was nothing 'funny' about him Im sure but I find it unbelievable now that we were allowed out on own at that age, let alone befriending an old man/tramp! I also remember the boating pond and helping the man. I also remember getting a free ride for helping in the paddle boats with the handles, and on one occasion doing the classic one foot in the boat/ one foot on the edge.....and ending up in the water, having to go and find my mum on the beach, dripping wet! Very embarrassing!! Only other thing I remember, is seeing a man threatening to jump off a church roof (that might date it). He was brought down safely but I think I remember my dad saying that later he successfully committed suicide by jumping off somewhere else. I cant remember how many times we went to Felixstowe. Not many I dont think and my aunt ultimately moved to Cambridge. Is anyone else so old that they recognise any of the above - particularly FRED SOUP??

You can see the Felixstowe cranes from Lavenham church tower. Always loved the Sunday market when they had the 3 Magazines offer stall and where the Sunday market is now they used to have traders based in the surrounding alcoves back in the early 00s.
Enjoyed your meander along the Felixstowe seafront, the WW11 tower was originally named Churchill forte, though it was more famously known as Sealand when it was occupied after the war. Being local I thought you might be interested in another historical fact, there was a Roman forte that was situated off Bawdsey Point. Its possible to see, at the time of very low tides, a large mound where the forte was situated, further evidence in recent years has been a number of Roman coins unearthed by people metal detecting on the beach nearby.
Hi Tim - sorry to see that you missed out all the new amenities between Mannings and Landguard. It used to be a car park for the Sunday Market, now it's a long thin park mainly for kids, loads of playgrounds, fountains, food, toilets, parking etc. I had no idea it was there until I saw it this year 2022, it almost makes up for the removal of all the facilities near the pier/leisure centre!

My Mum loved going to the Rattan restaurant in the Marlborough hotel for Sunday lunch; yes, a shame to see it all boarded up. At 23:50 you mention the role of Languard fort during World War II in 1951...about 6 years out, as the war ended in 1945 ☺ You mentioned the ferry between Old Felixstowe and Bawdsey at the beginning of your walk; there's also the ferry running from the lookout point where you finished across to Harwich and Shotley. I've used both of them with my cycle.
The site where the boating lake used to be is now the Events Area. On carnival weekend, it has a stage for bands and music and is packed with people picnicking and enjoying the show!
Wow I love the video I live in Felixstowe and Sealand has its own prince and used to be the base for pirate radio they have there own currency and used to have there own passports

Great to see you visit my home town Tim. I walk along that seafront every day with my dogs. The Leisure Centre by the old boating lake is going to be redeveloped so the area including the Marlborough Hotel will look quite different again in a few years.

I've been going to feilxtowe since the mid sixtys. There used to be a house in the fenced off area at the langar road car park and a lot more small building s with target practice when the army still occupied it .They used to put up a flag .there is a nice park for kids in langar road now .

Prior to Sealand it was a WW2 anti aircraft platform, they used to run boat trips around it circa 1953? which was circa when Manor end lido got destroyed by the sea. A small kiddie railway was at the end of Manning's funfair. Felixtowe docks had about 1 visiting tramp coaster a week and you could fish off their pier. Lovely video, thanks

(English) and Dutch people took the idea to America. Hence why you'll find Yarmouth, Bristol and many more English town names in America. Probably New England. Pumpkins also originated from England. English monks took them, or the seeds to America centuries ago.

No sand on that beach when I was a kid 1950’s 1960’s. Used to do our ballet recital at the spa. As the coast goes toward the docks. Past the huts. There was ministry of defense property. Lots of stuff left from world war 2. Interesting place. Think it’s gone now.

Filixstowe, is really an awesome seafront !! It has a long coastline that offers a lot of adventures such as,fishing,boating and swimming.It is an important port because big ships enter its coast,either for resting or loading and unloading and for connecting to other parts of the world.The coastal region is lush and green and very fertile because of the presence of several types of plants and trees found in the area.Its inland is also long and broad and appears beautiful with its most beautiful gardens and large grasslands.Its coastal region also offers certain historical spots and several places of entertainments such as snack and food centres,restaurants and bars,
where one can relax and enjoy the beauty of the beach.For this reason,it is an important tourist centre where people come to enjoy its beauty and to make explorations !

I have such fond memories of Felixstowe camping holidays at pewitt camping site buying pippa dolls in the toy store in the town and the camping shop was always a place to visit on visits to Felixstowe as well as cordys cakes on the seafront I could go on for hours

Oh I just fell into this video...what a joy. When we married (50 yrs ago this year) we had to wait a few months for our house, so we rented a caravan at Landguard caravan site. I took holidays in Felixstowe with my grandparents I one visited RAF Bawdsey with my grandfather who had met Robert Watson-Watt in the war when he was a range finder with the Royal Artillery anti-aircraft units in London.
Never been to Felixstow, always thought it was just a port, however last month I had to go there for work. Its so beautiful, a few weeks ago I had to just North of it to Alderburgh, I have never been to such a sweet place, cant wait till we can get out again with the caravan.

@@WalkWithMeTim i was thinking of doing one myself like this but you done much better job than i could have done 😂 one fact you might not know is that the pier used to be the longest in the country but was blown up during WW2 to stop the Germans from docking at the end

In the summer, we used the ferry between Harwich and hook of Holland and whilst that’s a huge ferry, it’s nothing compared to those container shops we sailed past in the dock at Felixstowe!

Just watching your walk round Felixstowe. I remember going to stay with my aunt in about 1954. All I can remember is she lived in a white-washed house set back and somewhat hidden down a short path to it (it may have been a bungalow or a one storey place). I think it was above a bakery (remember the lovely smells) and there was a peacock in one of the gardens, which made a terrible noise early in the morning. I think there was a big, old (orange brick?) house next to her house and a footpath next to that which went down to the shops/promenade(?). I must have been 7 or 8 and remember clearly my younger sister and I meeting an American girl and siblings(?) on the path (I think her name was Renée Laroux (pronounced not spelt, Im sure, like that!). We used to go there a lot and spent our time talking to an old man. We always thought he was a tramp but might have been doing some poor old chap a grave injustice!! He used to sit on a bench and we knew him as 'Fred Soup'. There was nothing 'funny' about him Im sure but I find it unbelievable now that we were allowed out on own at that age, let alone befriending an old man/tramp! I also remember the boating pond and helping the man. I also remember getting a free ride for helping in the paddle boats with the handles, and on one occasion doing the classic one foot in the boat/ one foot on the edge.....and ending up in the water, having to go and find my mum on the beach, dripping wet! Very embarrassing!! Only other thing I remember, is seeing a man threatening to jump off a church roof (that might date it). He was brought down safely but I think I remember my dad saying that later he successfully committed suicide by jumping off somewhere else. I cant remember how many times we went to Felixstowe. Not many I dont think and my aunt ultimately moved to Cambridge. Is anyone else so old that they recognise any of the above - particularly FRED SOUP??

You can see the Felixstowe cranes from Lavenham church tower. Always loved the Sunday market when they had the 3 Magazines offer stall and where the Sunday market is now they used to have traders based in the surrounding alcoves back in the early 00s.

Enjoyed your meander along the Felixstowe seafront, the WW11 tower was originally named Churchill forte, though it was more famously known as Sealand when it was occupied after the war. Being local I thought you might be interested in another historical fact, there was a Roman forte that was situated off Bawdsey Point. Its possible to see, at the time of very low tides, a large mound where the forte was situated, further evidence in recent years has been a number of Roman coins unearthed by people metal detecting on the beach nearby.

Hi Tim - sorry to see that you missed out all the new amenities between Mannings and Landguard. It used to be a car park for the Sunday Market, now it's a long thin park mainly for kids, loads of playgrounds, fountains, food, toilets, parking etc. I had no idea it was there until I saw it this year 2022, it almost makes up for the removal of all the facilities near the pier/leisure centre!

My Mum loved going to the Rattan restaurant in the Marlborough hotel for Sunday lunch; yes, a shame to see it all boarded up.
At 23:50 you mention the role of Languard fort during World War II in 1951...about 6 years out, as the war ended in 1945 ☺
You mentioned the ferry between Old Felixstowe and Bawdsey at the beginning of your walk; there's also the ferry running from the lookout point where you finished across to Harwich and Shotley. I've used both of them with my cycle.

The site where the boating lake used to be is now the Events Area. On carnival weekend, it has a stage for bands and music and is packed with people picnicking and enjoying the show!

Great to see you visit my home town Tim. I walk along that seafront every day with my dogs. The Leisure Centre by the old boating lake is going to be redeveloped so the area including the Marlborough Hotel will look quite different again in a few years.

I've been going to feilxtowe since the mid sixtys. There used to be a house in the fenced off area at the langar road car park and a lot more small building s with target practice when the army still occupied it .They used to put up a flag .there is a nice park for kids in langar road now .

Prior to Sealand it was a WW2 anti aircraft platform, they used to run boat trips around it circa 1953? which was circa when Manor end lido got destroyed by the sea. A small kiddie railway was at the end of Manning's funfair. Felixtowe docks had about 1 visiting tramp coaster a week and you could fish off their pier. Lovely video, thanks
