Two sea stories: 1) following an overhaul our submarine was being evaluated at a navy acoustic range. Basically you drive back and forth while the facility measures how quiet you are. While doing so we communicate between runs with a boat on the surface via an "underwater phone". Also in the area was a school of dolphins. At times their constant chatter, cursing us, whichever was so loud we had to pause for the dolphins to either shut up or go away. 2) Also after the overhaul we head out to sea for local operations to test things and train. There is one toilet (head) for the enlisted and one for the officers. For some random reason the enlisted head toilet faced aft (toward the back of the sub). If somebody left the seat up and if the submarine changed depth to go shallow, the boat would of course point up and the toilet seat would THUD shut...making noise. The senior enlisted Chief (called the Chief Of the Boat or COB) had the toilet seat removed for a week at sea in order to train the crew to leave the seat down.
Who the hell cares about a toilet seat thud. It doesn't drop all the time. Lmao. Bit of bitchin Betty Stigler that COB is.

Great video! Can you do a video on anti-submarine warfare? It's amazing to me how lethal and stealthy subs can be but there's not much information out there on how they're countered, or if they even can be.

By sonar from ships, towed array sonars and sonar buoys that are dropped into the water. Subs are then attacked through depth charges, sonar honing torpedoes and other subs.

Sure the video claims no sound is to be made by the crew. Then we compare that to the real world and? Yup we got a submarine commander ordering his crew to make some noise!
Like puppets the USN then records that sound and expects it will be the same next time they pick up the sub ... But that is not how it went down ofcourse. ;-)
Sonar is for WWII submarines at best. Modern submarine sensors have moved on decades ago.

The russians also have a nuclear particle sniffer on some subs. So they can detect if a US nuclear powered sub or carrier is around.
At this point I can't remember if you have made a video on it.

Yeah, they utilize a bunch of sniffer dogs located in kennels at the rear of the submarine. The Russian's are a little more 'down to Earth' with their approach.
As if, nobody would know if 2.2 million pounds of US Navy Aircraft Carrier was nearby... lol

I live a quarter mile from the lake where they do tests for the sonar units that get put on ohio class submarines. Its a platform sitting a mile and a half out of the lake and they get there and back by smaller boats. I see that platform sitting out there every day,
That's pretty cool. Do you know what they do to test them?
@@xenophagia they have two huge cranes on the platform that lowers the sonar unit into the water, the lake is almost 800 feet deep and is almost perfectly uniform in temperature which is perfect for testing for the accuracy of the sonar. I dont know of the details of how it all works though.

The day someone invents a computer programme that instantly converts passive sonar signals into a recognisable shape and projects it onto a screen will make steering a submarine as easy as steering a car. The screen could be like a windshield, and the crew piloting the submarine could literally see what's ahead all in REAL TIME.
I guess it'd be more like a complex system full of redundant validation engine subsystems with exposed API services with possibility to fallback to elder level of technology...

Not to be overly critical, I'd like to point out that there's a bit more to be told though. For example: one would expect that subs also take samples of the seawater at a regular basis of the area where they're operating in order to detect currents, variations in temperature and salinity in order to fine tune their sonars to that. Also, oceanography (the mapping of the ocean floor) and accurate Inertial Navigation are of great importance to know where your ship is at and with which oceanographic conditions one has to adapt to sensor/ and navigationwise. The INS meanwhile has got to be adjusted for minor deviations that occur over time by sticking out a GPS receiver on a mast, to keep the navigation precise within certain parameters.
As for towed array sonars (TAS); if one wants to look behind the baffles, some submarines have rearward looking passive sonar in some sort of bulges either on their tower or rearward fins, placed in such a manner that its propellor (or pumpjet) is not likely to interfere. That has several advantages over towed arrays, as it takes no time to deploy and is less prone to get stick in fishing nets or underwater rocks, debris or what have you. Also note that a TAS is not looking rearward as such; its multiple hydrophones are placed in line looking sideways/upward/downward, so that a small sector behind the sub still is not covered. Some more advanced TAS may cover that area, but that was initially not the case.
One aspect you might consider covering as well is countermeasures against sonar, such as decoys that simulate a cavitating propellor.

nice video! explains almost everything but i can't find any video that explains how the actual active sonar sound/pulse is created. is it mechanically? it's supposed to have up to around 250db!! how is the machine creating this intense sound and directing it. that would really interest me.

This is a brilliant video. The accuracy of all the topics you covered actually had me concerned that the average person knows this much about it. I enjoy coming across videos like this, I usually never think many people have an interest in submarine life or how they operate.
Also found it comical that you were describing everything as fascinating. Haha haven't heard it put like that in awhile. I guess you get desensitized to these things after awhile.

I want to say Japan did some practical testing with MHD, but the impulse you can generate from it is too weak to drive anything other than basically toys.
In the book, it was actually a pump jet that was ahead of its time. I suppose by the time they made the movie, pump jets were in common enough use already that they felt they had to do something more extreme to make the "undetectable" aspect seem plausible to audiences who don't know anything about sonar. Or perhaps they felt the subtlety would be lost on audiences in general, and I think they would have been right about that.
4:13 plot should start at 0 and move past 270 to eventually settle around180, if the orientation legend at 3:30 is correct. Something moving fast past 0 should mean that it moved perpendicularly to your orientation just in front of your nose. Or that you are moving sideways past a slower or stationary object in front of your nose.

Bubbles created during cavitation are actually boiling water due to extremely low pressure created by the propeller.
The lower the pressure the lower the temperature for water to boil
actually its caused by a change of pressure. imagine twirling your hand around underwater, you will see bubbles. essentially the same concept.

@@richardpatton2502 Yes, pressure can cause things to boil, no, cavitational blade rate is not attributed to boiling water, it is difference in pressure. im a sonar operator. i know what im talking about.

what if there was a sub a very small sub about 60 meter in length or less with a mini nuclear reactor, highly maneuverable,
than can go as fast as a torpedeo because off it small size. then i would not have to worry about torpedo attack i can than use passive sonar on approach and than active sonar on attack and cause absolute havoc. and they cannot shoot back at me. is it possible i ask.
