I read the line, “Adults think they’re wielding power, but really power is wielding them” in Turtles All the Way Down and was reminded of this video(page 145). It’s interesting how things come back to you.

Just donated a foot of glorious red Disney princess mane to Locks of Love. I may no longer get to be called Ariel by little girls, but, with luck, some sick little girl gets to be Ariel in my place.

Becka Harris, unfortunately locks of love mostly doesn't do wigs for sick children. They predominantly sell quite expensive hair extensions under the table....

It's been a hot minute and what's done can't be undone, but for anyone reading this, Locks of Love is far from the best option. Wigs for Kids is a prominent better alternative.

Hi Mr.Green :) My name is Emily Howell. It is around four in the morning and I have just started watching you and your brother's vlog for the first time. I will not say that I am a huge fan because that would be inaccurate. I've only read one of your books, and seen only a few of your videos. But from what I have watched and read, I find that I am blown away by your level of writing talent, your utter humanity and honesty on topics of complete seriousness and loose frivolity, your hilarious sense of humor and your all around awesome nerdiness. You know, my past week has been really crap. I am leaving for college soon, and I am scared and that is one reason why I am up all night watching your videos. They give me something not many things in this world do for me. They give me hope. Thank you, John Green. I appreciate you.

John Green discusses the just world fallacy, Lupe Fiasco, Shailene Woodley's impending hair cut on her road to becoming Hazel Grace Lancaster for The Fault in Our Stars movie, the way that power gets wielded, and how difficult it can be for all of us to see the world as it is and not just as we wish it to be.

Back in January 2013, I decided to shave my entire head to donate my hair to cancer, in honor of my Aunt who had passed away from brain and lung cancer. I had donated over a foot of hair, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I know Shai did this quite a while back, and so did I, but it is still such an important cause, and people all over the world need to know about cancer, and how to donate to help all cancer foundations. Reading The Fault in Our Stars changed me, and when my hair is long enough again, I will donate some more. Thank you, John, for writing this novel, and thank you, for spreading cancer awareness.

What you said at 3:36 reminded me of my favorite Babylon 5 quote: "I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, 'wouldn't it be much worse if life *were* fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?' So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." --Marcus Cole

So I had really long hair last year and my mom said I should cut. I didn't really like the idea but I remember one of my teacher's I was really close to son died of cancer so I donated 10 inches of my hair to locks of love

    • @puppylovergirl303
      @puppylovergirl303 7 років тому +7

SammyisanArtFreak thank you for doing so ❤ I have done so many a few times as well before realizing from a variety of sources that locks of love sells the vast majority of their hair for extensions. They do so under the guise of funding their wig donation, but it seems that unfortunately their minimal wig donation is just a con to make money from extensions, which are best and most expensive when it comes from other people's hair. I donated 14 and then 16 inches of hair to them, so I realize that this sucks to hear.
Children with Hair Loss, the charity John talks in this video about Shailene donating her hair to, is one of the few hair donation charities that is widely respected and revered for the fact that they really do prioritize wig-making over selling hair for extensions. If you ever donate again, which I hope you do, I would recommend donating to them or a similarly respected charity (I donated to children with hair loss last time I donated which was with 18 inches of hair).
Note: donating at all is a wonderful thing to do on a personal level regardless of who you donated hair to so I would like to commend you for that ❤

In college my now husband Thomas and I were in a workshop where each of 10 people randomly was assigned a set of resources and challenges. 3 of the people were given most of the snacks and could do what they wanted, some people had less and needed to complete a task, etc. Thomas was told he could do whatever he wanted, but had no resources and couldn't talk. He spent the whole time getting handouts or stealing from the more resourced people and giving the snacks to the less resourced people all without saying a word. The facilitators told us later that out of the dozens of times they had done the workshop no one had ever become Robinhood but they were impressed with his unique use of power.

Hey john! I just wanted to say I have been going through your videos and this one really caught my eye. For three straight years I have been donating my hair, because my beautiful and amazing aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer. And following her diagnoses my dad was diagnosed as well with stage four colon cancer, It then went on to metastasize to his liver and lungs. Right about this time I had the amazing pleasure to read your book The Fault in Our Stars. It really made me realize how thankful I should be that my dad and aunt were not teenagers when the were attacked with this horrible disease. The I became extremely grateful tat my parents got the "hazel grace and august waters" epic love story! so on behalf of my family thank you so much John Green!

I actually want Nerdfighteria to remain small, out of almost selfish reasons, because I want a community, rather than a HUGE fandom, where we all know the same inside jokes from vlogbrothers and we all want to be intellectually connected, whether it be through Peanut Butter Face or through CrashCourse and SciShow. Nerdfighteria is special to me, and although I realize the benefits of growing, I want it to remain special because of its smallness.
Also, Shailene's hair is nice. :)

I have donated my hair six times to locks of love. My friends think I am crazy for doing it, but it grows long in the winter and then I cut it short in the summer. I love doing, it is also the only time I cut my hair. I feel like a am doing good for the world by doing almost nothing. It's the least I could do, and I don't see how I couldn't do it. It doesn't take much, only 10" of hair. Anyone that can/will please donate your hair, it goes to people in need and most of the time your haircut is free when you donate your hair but not the styling.

I don't think power is something to control and that it really is our own choice to live or not live up to it. I mean; your books are also getting more successful and I could imagine some writers getting an attitude because of that. But no here you are, telling us that your shirt matches the wall and that we can donate our hair to charity. I could definitely say that I adore you, John Green.

    terry pratchet - hogfather
Death: Humans need fantasy to *be* human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.
    Susan: With tooth fairies? Hogfathers?
Death: Yes. As practice, you have to start out learning to believe the little lies.
Susan: So we can believe the big ones?
Death: Yes. Justice, mercy, duty. That sort of thing.
Susan: They're not the same at all.
Death: You think so? Then take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder, and sieve it through the finest sieve, and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet, you try to act as if there is some ideal order in the world. As if there is some, some rightness in the universe, by which it may be judged.
Susan: But people have got to believe that, or what's the point?
Death: You need to believe in things that aren't true. How else can they become?
my take on this video in light of the above text - believe and it will become, just be very careful about what you believe

I have often noted that when people say things like, "What goes around comes around," they are actually trying to accept an unfair situation. The world - life - is not fair. But that does not mean it isn't also beautiful. And individuals can change the world in small, measured steps. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

It was- no, still is- beautiful, intricate, and I love how the characters had their own unique personalities, I love how Hazel and Augustas has such complex, abstract personalities, and how realistic the story was. How cool of Shailene! I've been donating my hair, 10 to 14 inches at a time, to Locks of Love since I was a little kid! It takes a lot of patience to let it grow a whole 8+ inches before cutting it, but it feels awesome to know that just by donating your hair, you're making some child's life a little better.

I have chronic pain and many illnesses and i probably wouldn't have been as thankful and wouldnt have wanted to help others s much as i want to now. I have decided to devote my future career to helping others in pain and bad health try to get better.

i actually cut 13 inches off my hair in may and donated it to little princesses, an organisation that makes wigs for children with cancer and i think it's a great thing of shailene and anyone to do!

I just donated my hair last march. I had about ten inches to donate. Everyone asked why i went from long hair to a pixie cut but I was very happy with my decision!

Yes! I cut my hair off last winter and donated it to Locks of Love, too. But I didn't cut my hair to donate it, I just wanted a change and the the idea crossed my mind afterwards, so I took the ponytail from the stylist so I could mail it out. When my mom would mention it to people, they would think I did it so I could donate it and she wouldn't correct them. My mom is so silly. And then they'd tell me days laters and I was always like, "Actually..."

My hair is currently really short so I can't donate it now, but I've donated my hair twice in my life so I gave in spirit.

I've donated my hair twice before (my hair used to be REALLY long) and it felt really good to be able to do something with the hair that i didn't want other than let it be swept up and thrown away

I've always felt that the reason we name and find fallacies like the Just World Fallacy is that if we do so, we can make ourselves and others more aware of a typical pattern of a human thinking in order to escape the faults of it. I'm glad researchers were able to identify this interesting phenomena and I hope it becomes common knowledge.

In my university sociology class earlier this year, we played a version of the unfair monopoly and the guy in my group who was the worst off pretty much gave up by the time all the properties were owned. He was the only person in our group to go bankrupt but it was interesting seeing how soon off he was willing to give up because he was so poor. It's actually really fun to play in the unfair monopoly with multiple players just for their reactions.

the two times i got my hair cut as a kid (after i was allowed to decide if it should be cut for my self lol), I donated to locks of love. Because i was a little kid, i didn't even think anything of it, I just needed a hair cut, had long hair, and had something cool to do with my long hair. Now looking back I'm happy to have had that experience and if i ever get another hair cut, i will be sure to repeat the gesture :)

Remember guys, if you do donate your hair, it can't be dyed or highlighted. Often times, you can ask your hairdresser to donate it for you. (I'm not sure if places like GreatClips do it though)

Oh my gosh! I do locks of love every time I cut my hair. And then I always get a comment from the hair dresser about how whatever kid gets a my-hair-wig is lucky because it's such a ginger color. And then I think about how so far there are three kids walking around with a my-hair wig and get compliments even though it's a wig and it makes me feel happy. I'd totally participate but I just cut my hair three months ago, so it's not long enough.

AUSTRALIAN NERDFIGHTERS. If you don't want to ship your hair overseas, I can recommend the Princess Charlotte Foundation which you can find by googling that name or Tresses for Princesses which does a similar thing but is here in Australia. You will need 35cm of hair and you can follow the instructions on the website on how to cut it.

I donated my hair to a similar organization a few years ago and LOVED it! I really want to donate my hair again, but I have kept it short recently because it is easier to manage. So I am making a long term donation. My goal is to grow my hair out as long as I can and keep it as healthy as possible, so that I can donate as much as I have when the TFiOS movie comes out. DFTBA

So, I finished the fault in our stars the other day, and I'd like to say if I hadn't watched John read the first chapter in one of his videos, it would have been amazing. Except I did watch his video, and therefore couldn't help but to imagine Hazel talking in Johns' voice the entire time
