Yeah, I guess they made a huge mistake expecting kids to have the attention span to keep watching to the "you probs thought this was real, didn't you?"
@@ayden3133 House Hippo was still on in the early 2000s? I remember this from when I was a kid during the late 90s, but I didn't realize they kept showing this commercial into the early 00s :P

@@SallyMankus130 I never believed this was real, but that's probably because in 1999, I was already 8 or 9, so perhaps I am a bit older than the people making these comments :P I am 31 now
When I was young, after I saw this psa, every time my mom got chips I would close it really tight and tell my dad to put it on the top of the fridge because I was scared about having house hippos, nostalgia I wish I could remake those days :(
They need more like this, maybe a bit quicker to reveal the point of not falling for everything (it seems it was common to believe in it instead of realizing what was said at the end)
It seemed so much like a national geographic documentary that it was thoroughly believed by people, many missing tge end revealing the point to be not to believe everything you see or hear
Okay. Cool. The house hippo. Don't believe everything you see. Fair enough. A cute, harmless, even educational PSA. Good for you, Canada. I will not have nightmares tonight. Okay. We good, Canada. We good. Thank you for that enlightening, very pleasant PSA.
I WANT A HOUSE HIPPO! I'd Make it a Little Mini-Apartment in my Closet & Serve it Peanut Butter on Toast Everyday! (In Fact, When Spring & Summer Roll Around, I Still See it on TV Sometimes!)
Oh my gosh, I am looking at your videos for an assignment for an online course; I remember almost each and every one of these commercials from when I was a little kid! My gosh, so much nostalgia!
This commercial made me hate concerned children's advertisers growing up because it made me believe this beautiful, wonderful, majestic creature was real and then suddenly, as quickly as it was introduced, tore it away.
The House Hippo: The greatest myth since the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Leprechauns, The Lochness Monster, Sasquatch, and the illuminati.
i remember the first time i saw this commercial. i was soo excited i was going to go find my mom and insist we get a pet house hippo that day. then it got to the part where is destroyed my happy hippo visions. i think i cried.
Who else has seen the new one? I flipped out with joy when I saw it on television. Love it. (It's not quite like this, really it's a commercial talking about the commercial.)
I love how looking back on this ad we all realized the message it was saying failed to reach us, we just started looking for the hippos, SORRY CCA! THIS BACKFIRED ON YOUR ASS! YOU MADE A WHOLE GENERATION OF KIDS SOUND CRAZY!
I remember this commercial when I was young, I saw it so many times,. One time when YTV had a Prank Patrol marathon they would play this on every commercial break.
aww, i remember this, i'm 12 and i didn't remember it, till i saw it just now, all of these i remember from when i was little. I would always leave my mittens in the closet on the floor and drop my peanut butter crumbs hoping one would come lol, i wanted one so bad.....
This was actually the best commercial for children. With so much fake news everywhere, an entire generation grew up questioning what was in the television. That was the Boomer's biggest downfall.
When I was little and this ad was more, like, new, I remember thinking, I want a house hippo! Now I saw this on tv recently and I'm like lol wtf crumbs from peanut butter on toast?
I remember looking in my closet for this! I thought my room was perfect for the house Hippo. I want a house hippo! I never understood the last bit of that commercial till... well now....
The way they structured this commercial, I honestly believed the commercial had ended, and a new commercial had begun, so I never understood that the house hippo was a video editing trick to make you question what you see on TV
I forced my cousin to search for one of these for an entire year. We almost shit ourselves when we saw the top of a grey frog this one time. :D "But you knew it couldn't be true, didn't you?" Dunno why I never heard that part -- I was just too pumped by the prospect of hippos living in my house and eating my toast crumbs!

The ironic thing was that when I was little this commercial almost convinced me House Hippos were real. It kind of back fired on them.
It's basically a right of passage for late 90s/early 00s kids to think that house hippos were real.
I legit asked my parents for one!! I don’t know how I missed the end of the PSA

6 year old me getting mad at my parents when they tried to tell me house hippos aren’t real HAHA
This was the most counter productive PSA ever; I mean, every child in Canada believed this up until about 2004.
I’d say up until like 2008 cus I remember this and I was born in 2002

I disagree we need more ads like this nowadays promoting thought about what you see on the internet and TV!
I have no regrets going on the countless "house hippo hunts" as a kid... i still leave the peanut butter toast out on the counter till this day
Probably the greatest comment on this video
As you should .. You never know when a house hippo will stop by
Mari SP I’m told it’s when you least expect it
It's the fact this PSA's message is needed more then ever in this day and age. It's crazy.
I was so PISSED that I never found a house hippo in my own house. The message of this PSA went right over my head as a kid hahaha
This should play before UA-cam vids LOL
yeah maybe less people can skip them

This is still the best commercial I've ever seen. I would watch this then go to the bathroom when the TV show came back on.
I remember when I was little and I saw this for the first time. I had never been so amazed before. The end ruined my week.
I love this. I love how they parody nature documentaries (which most people take to be completely factual) and ask viewers to question what they see.

Me too.
Even all these years later, this ad still makes me laugh.

Man this ad should be shown nowadays so many gullible people falling for misinformation these days
I loved watching this commercial years ago... the message is still very relevant today.
In that case, maybe this PSA is only trying to make me _think_ house hippos don't exist.
Wait... There's a second half to this commercial?!?!? I just thought it was warning me about the house hippos😂😭
When I was little, I didn’t care that it’s a PSA about some things are not real on tv, I just wanted a house hippo 🦛
