Hi from Berlin on the tipping just say " Der rest ist für dich" and give the amount you have to pay plus the tip the waiter will automaticly keep the tip for him that is the way i do it (born and raised in berlin).

You can jay-walk even in front of the police, no problem. But the one rule is that if there are children, you stop because you should be a good example to them. Even Berliners do that!

The calculation in German restaurants (except very expensive ones) ist that 40% of the income of restaurants has to come from drinks. If you just eat without drinking, the restaurant makes a minus. Basically cheap food (compared to other countries) is subsidized by expensive drinks.

Also remember that taking pictures of people (except at an event) is not allowed. You have to ask their permission unless they're just somewhere in the background. Same with using drones to film. People here value privacy and privacy laws are strict compared to the US.

  • @pummysworld369

The tip thing: it's a legal problem. If you leave it on the table, it's not sure, whether you lost it or to whom it should go to. If you give tip directly, the waiter can have it tax-free, because it's kind of personal gift. In some places, they use tip-pooling, but that's their business and does not affect you. At some places tipping is not allowed.
Not to confuse with tip are the donation boxes, you can find at some places. A lot of shops have those for children funds or whatever. Along the coastline you'll find donation boxes in the shape of boats. Those are for the German life-guard assotions on sea, the DGzRS (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger). In the south you may find DLEG boxes. Those are for the life-guards at lakes, kinda 'bay watch'

I like your Videos but most of the time you offer wrong information. You should get away more from thinking too much like a American. People wear suits. People pay a lot with their bank cards. People don’t like it when you be filming them, but nobody cares if you film just the location. You can get tap water here also. Why do you care about being judged 😂 you need to be just more confident.
Also just a small hint, don’t assume things are always like that just because you have seen that once.

All the ticket machines in Berlin (except the very stripped down ones on board trams) accept credit/debit cards. Actually it's much easier to buy a train ticket with a credit card than it is with cash. All machines in the subway stations accept cards but only about half of them take bank notes. So if you plan on buying the most expensive full area month ticket for 201.50€, good luck paying that in cash on a machine that only deals with coins. That's one hundred 2€ coins …
They installed the NFC contactless payment terminals on the ticket machines last year. But you were able to pay with plastic money wayy before that

  • @KidCracken
    @KidCracken 11 місяців тому

You can pay with card pretty much everywhere in Berlin.
On my recent trips (last couple of years), it's almost only in spätis it's cash only or a €5/10 minimum.

Berliners in general are not very fond of being photographed. One person once described it to me like she felt being an animal in a zoo, and I had to agree: I also wouldn't like to be photographed without being asked for permission. It's perfectly alright if you bring a camera to some tourist attraction, or film at a public festival, but as Berlin is crowded with tourists, please try to take your pictures so that you don't stand in anyone's way. Remember, usually you are just a visitor, not a journalist who would have some special rights.
Leaving a club at 8 or 9 a.m. is wonderful especially in summer. You can have breakfast at some street café, or decide to go to one of Berlin's many lakes, where you can go swimming or just have a nap in the shade. Once I decided to watch out for a ship and take a canal cruise. Chances are good you will get a ticket before noon and the ship is not too crowded.
What I also liked about Berlin: You are not frowned upon when you drink a bottle of beer in a park. But, in some areas, you may be frowned upon if you drink from a can, because those are considered not to be environmentally friendly.

When you „jaywalk“ it can cost you 5€. Or your life when you don‘t see the car. 😔 yeah of course many people do that here, but its not legal. When you drive bike when its red, you have to pay 60€ and you get a point in Flensburg. That mean when you have a driver license you can have to 8 points than you must have a new test.
So ok you can walk when its red. Or you wait the 2 minutes and nobody stares at you.

Dana, as you mentioned that we other Germans did have a peculiar relation with Berlin at first hand it is our frustration that it is the only capital in the world that is not able to live on its own and therefore we send our kids to Berlin so that they could witness at their own, what it likes to live in a city without a functional public service. With that freedom, our kids would and should make there own mistakes (they will sow their wild oats) and neither them not we like to see that on the internet. We (the parents) are always worried, but we do not need photos to show us the evidence that our kids are the same kind of stuff that we were as young adults. Have fun and enjoy your time.

You know the reasons, why Berlin is not the industrial and financial engine it was sinde 1870 for decades? The province should be proud of our capital. Move all the FI from Frankfurt (back) to Berlin and Frankfurt will lose everything. Move all the industries outsourced during WW II and during the time of the cold war to other places like Bavaria etc. back to Berlin and Bavaria etc. will lose. The province always hated Berlin - to modern, not conservative enough etc. etc.

    • @lotharschepers2240
      @lotharschepers2240 4 роки тому

@@kvwuppkvwupp834 I do not agree with you, because everything you mentioned did only foster my personal opinion about Berlin. Crying for the things that had gone long ago even when it never was the achievement of the city itself. Berlin was a small village before the Prussian branch of the Hohenzollern family did make it their residence. In contrast to that Nürnberg or Leipzig or Frankfurt/Main or Hamburg or name it. Every one of them was always cities of their own right and all of them were destroyed in WWII and did come back on their own, but 3 decades after the wall disappears it is Berlin that got the overwhelming majority of subsidies and is still lacking behind. If you want the companies back that you mentioned before, why did you do nothing to be attractive to them, the only lament we province folks did hear from Berlin is, be proud of us. Sorry, get your sh... together and show us that you could achieve at least something.
And yes we did not like you but not because you are too modern or anything in that direction, we did not like you because you achieve nothing instead you always cry for more support and even with that you are constantly failing. In the early 1990s, I was upset about the citizens of Brandenburg as they denied the idea of a single Bundesland Berlin/Brandnburg, but now I have to apologize, your neighbors simply did know you better than I.
And be aware I have tried to be polite with that comment, my real thoughts, and feelings towards Berlin did not fit into a public comment section.

I've lived & worked in Berlin and visited there 12 times since 1986. 1.) Yes, some people do wear suit & tie for work. Check out Mitte or many white-collar offices. 2.) I usually tip 5% or so with a few coins if the service is good. Nonetheless, tipping is not expected as in the USA. 3.) I've been served tap water everywhere in Germany, you just need to know the proper word: "Leitungswasser bitte" (faucet water , please) 4.) a big DON'T do you left out is: DON'T ride "black" the U-bahn, ie don't ride the U-bahn with out paying. Undercover Police daily ride the Ubahn and especially in Kreuzberg, Freidrischshein and its a 50 euro fine which must be paid on the spot. I've watched a dozen or more locals & tourists get fined on the spot.

EDIT: I thought my initial comment over, and I decided, that I don't want to come across too harsh. So I want to add, that I appreciate your work for other "foreigners", that you want to give them help and guidance so they can acclimatize easier here in Germany (or in this case specifically in Berlin).
But I think, maybe through your Canadian socializing (or something, I really dunno) you personally seem to be afraid to "stand out" or something ... I think at least in Berlin (or in Cologne) it is okay to stand out, to "walk to the beat of your own drum" as you called it (nice idiom!) ... In Cologne they have a saying "Jeder Jeck is anders", that would translate pretty much to "Every dude is different" ... so ... Dare to be different, as long as you mean no harm to others! :D
Just for completion, here is my mini-rant that I wrote first:
    To wrap it up:
    1. "Don't EVER dare to stand out!"
    2. "Don't EVER dare to have an attitude!"
    3. "Take a nap before go night-clubbing."

In Berlin there are so many streets without lights you have to jaywalk. With suits maybe the younger folks but if you are a high end professional wear a suit. Who cares if a server judges you. Then no tip. She is right. Customer service is terrible. She is right...smaller areas are cash only like the rest of Germany. Not sure who she goes out with but that is a fringe group at 2 or 3 in the morning. Everyone else has a job.

Gonna have to disagree on the crossing against the red advise. Wait. The locals will respect you for it and it will not kill you. Just because they don't yell or say anything, doesn't mean your disrespect was not registered. The advice to the contrary comes from typical Berlin hipster thinking. Also, outside of HIpster-zone, servers are just fine and friendly.

I'm Berliner and a native. 1.You can leave tips on the table. 2.Jaywalking is not common (and really dangerous). 3. No suits? Good Lord, of course, thousands of businessmen and businesswomen live and work here.
Your advice might be very helpful for clubbers, though.
Things you don't do in Berlin? Let me say: Don't expect too much. Learn to let go. The city is dysfunctional - just make your own kind of music, so to speak. DIY is very common, I guess. Berliners love DIY markets a lot. Real Berliners are there! Improvisation is everything. Don't take all the four letter words as a personal insult. Try to use a few harsh cursewords yourself to make your life easier.

Re Jaywalking -- I find this interesting as this is something that must have changed in Berlin over the past 35 years. When I was living in Berlin 1989-92, jaywalking was not ok & would peg you as an American or other foreigner. I was yelled at by old ladies for jaywalking -- one told me she feared the future of Germany if the young people have no respect for rules

This is still largely true. Jaywalking is often frowned upon and generally not the norm

You need to live a while in other parts of Germany, too.
Contrary to the stereotype, most Germans view rules as guidelines that will be observed when it makes sense. Even here in deep conservative Bavaria. E.g. only about a third of all drivers in Germany give a damn about the speed limit.
Asking for tap water is rude. It's like asking for bacon in a bakery. It's simply not a choice. Btw same thing in most other European countries.
German customer service is tailored to their customers' expectations. In cologne people have a different attitude than in Berlin, where the attitude in general is more cheeky, which makes for its specific charm.

she is overtipping and imposing her north american views on berlin or germany, when you eat in germany the menu says in german on the bottom: tip and tax are included in the prices. Therefore in most cases no further tip is needed or has to be done. In germany if the service was really good one would round up or add a euro or two only since the tip was already included. i bet this lady lived home with her parents in toronto and had no big expenses , thats why she was able and did tip too much in canada and now wants to impose this on a unwilling germany. its not the same system at all. ditto cab drivers , one might tip a euro or two max. // tipping is not a big thing in germany. when you eat in a restaurant in germany in many cases the waiter is not a german anyway and even might not even know about extravagant tipping from their home country. never leave any extra money on the table as that is unknown in germany. if you must overtip , just getting off the plane from north america , then hand it to the person directly. in most cases in germany the service , not up to north american standards, is not worth really any extra tip. gruss. R.

The recommendation about not asking for tap water, I disagree with that!
While okay, if you want to play nice and not be noticed, that's a good idea.
But to do the right thing, I would recommend as many people as possible do that. And insist. Maybe leave the place with the whole group if they don't give it.
The more people do that, the more normal it will become, and the less of those horrible reactions you describe we'll have.
