christianbrecht, Asai was obviously experimenting with "blending" methods, grasping, and more "alive" footwork, all of this most likely was in karate at one time. What is taught today in shotokan as "blocks" are actually throws with distance, grasping and blending. Often this requires a lot more flexibility with opening and closing the fist than what is taught in today's shotokan. Funakoshi's writings talk about traditional training for gripping. What do you think that's all about?
that"s a good observation, I often find my-self doing the same,I think in an actual situation Asai would never of used a closed fist-only open hand techniques.
Asai can't keep his left fist closed. I think for both hands he has the bad habit of opening the fist. I don't think his fist also travels a straight line to the target something of with the alignment of his fists with the forearm shoulder etc. I now what they say about this guy but his karate does not impress me unlike Kanazawa, Osaka, Yahara, etc.

Asai sensei had a injury in his left hand that kept him from close completely his fist during technics over the years

If you look carefully that's a wave of energy going through his arm.
Bigrobuz honestly i think its because Asai's kihon is really degraded. Its not a 'better' way, Asai's karate is just way overrated IMHO
この稽古は果たして意義のあるものでしょうか?自分には滑稽なものにしか見えません。
