      PLANETCHEAT I wish I could explain to you just how wrong you are, but I know the argument would seem pointless and hostile. However, the gaming industry is on a rise not a plummet, and many designers and developers are creating more interesting graphically involved and story driven games in order to reach different audiences. This game wouldn't have fit as movie because the act of becoming one with the character is what makes this game - and others like it - so emotional and unique. Movies have a constant way of reminding you that you are not involved. Games diminish that wall and allow you to take part of the action. Also, I respect that you feel this way.

    • @trixicenby999
      @trixicenby999 5 років тому +17

      @PlanetCheat No your wrong. A game needs a good story and sometimes interactive stories is the best way to make a story. Stories like this wouldn't fit in a movie because it needs you to be a part of the experience and feel like ur in that world. Ur just a angry gamer who can't appreciate a game that doesn't involve much movement. Btw this game is really beautiful and has a great story with magificient telling of that. U seriously need to act Up and respect how the gaming world blooms into different styles and genres. I'd say the gaming industry mostly has been improved but in some cases not

      @alman8908 5 років тому +8

      @PlanetCheat " I don't play games to be told a story - I play them for the challenges they offer" Good for you, others dont. Just because you dont like this GAME, it doesnt mean its not a game. I actually love playing games with a deep story line. If a game focuses on a story, its not less of a game. Its just a different genre. Bet youre one of those fortnite kids that are literally too braindead and lazy to enjoy story based games.

    How this story hasn't been turned into a real movie yet, is beyond me. With the right cast, and the right person doing it, Tim Burton comes to mind, this would be an instant classic. Plus, I think you could get a little deeper into the characters, that way.

    • @MsRee713
      @MsRee713 6 років тому +67

      Derek Lindsay Helena Bonham Carter would make an incredible Great Gramma Edie. Vera Farmiga as Dawn and her little sister, Taisa Farmiga from American Horror Story as Edith would be perfect.

    • @reverendsaul
      @reverendsaul 6 років тому +26

      All those would be great choices, especially Helena Bonham Carter. She was amazing in Big Fish, and has no problem, pulling off different ages, which Edie's character would probably need. I think Willem Dafoe would make a great Sven. Gary Oldman, or J.K. Simmons as Sam, I know they are a little older than the character, but could easily, pull it off. Maybe Dev Patel as Lewis, and Hayden Panettiere as Barbara.

    This all reminds me so much of growing up with psychosis. I knew much of it is fake, but it was more real and important than any bland reality could be. I'm legit crying because of how well some of this is portrayed.
    The subtle paranoia (more like realistic paranoia) of Walter, isolating and living in a bunker for fear of the danger outside. The imaginary world of Lewis taking over his life slowly until he tries to join it. The whispers.

    The Lewis finich part got to me really, really hard. Letting your imagination carry you away, escapism, then, ultimately, suicide. My boyfriend, my mother and my sister had all attempted, all survived, and this just broke me. I can't describe it besides empathy, happiness that they are still with me, and fear, and guilt, because I've treaded along those lines before, and although I never hurt myself or attempted, I could've. Now I'm mourning Lewis without even knowing him. He was my boyfriend with a different face, he was once myself, my sister, my mom.... especially my boyfriend though, from his room to his imagination, it was.. a lot.

      As someone who has ADHD and has maladaptive daydreams, I broke at his story too. Creating such complex and investing worlds to escape the mundane hell you live in, it’s something I do to escape the mounting pressures of my life. Lewis and his death are, in my opinion, the scariest and the most real. Mental health is no joke.

    This game was so hauntingly dark and beautiful. I’m so scared of death but something about the calmness with which Edith narrates about the deaths, put me at ease a bit and I felt tremendous peace about death, when I finished the game.
    I want part of the last line to someday be on my tombstone or at least spoken at my eventual funeral:
    “It's a lot to ask, but I don't want you to be sad that I'm gone. I want you to be amazed that any of us ever had a chance to be here at all.”

    Even though he was born five years after Molly died, Walter's room's walls were painted in an undersea motif, with a shark in the corner swimming towards Molly's room, representative of how Molly recorded herself from her dream, and always visible from the foot of Walter's bed. The book "Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", hiding the lever to get into Molly's room, is known to feature a giant squid, or kraken, which is, again, reminiscent of the tentacle shown in Molly's dream which showed her in a monster's form, only the tentacle visible, suggesting she imagined her monster form was that of a giant squid. And, under where the head of Walter's bed had been, on the carpet beneath, was added a long, blue, creepy tentacle, with branches snaking off of it, both suggestive of the monster under Molly's bed, waiting for her to fall asleep to eat her, now being under his own, as well as of the Finch family tree, a wall painting behind the side of his bed showing the old, sunken house, and behind the head, near the floor, a wall painting of a sunken wooden board reading "Finches", with finches painted atop it, showing what the fate of the Finches would be with the "Curse" . Walter was surrounded by the last horrific vision Molly had, and the vision of the "Finch Curse", his entire life, even if only subconsciously in his mind, and when he had to hide under his bed, he had to lay right on top of the monster's tentacle the entire time, between the dead, sunken house, and the sunken family name, and if he looked up from the foot of the bed, his eyes would rest on the mouth of the shark.

    Also wanted to point out the neat parallel between Sam and Dawn. For Calvin's death, Sam writes a poem describing his brother's death. Dawn does the exact same thing for her brother, Gus. Another one is Lewis and Milton, how Milton in the end escaped to his fantasy world (and presumably lives depending on what you believe happened to him) while Lewis during life realized that though the world he created in his imagination is one he is proud of, he can never be apart of it and it can never be real, thus the only way he could be apart of it is through death.

It is pretty well understood by most everyone that his story is one about your imagination wandering during the monotony of daily work,and how you can feel like a robot (like when you see him from third person in the factory just moving his hands even with no fish). I thought taking the long break between chops detracted a lot from that part. Otherwise everything else was well timed and thorough. Great quality as well.

    Lewis's story felt like reliving my last suicide attempt. It made me pause and wonder if I actually died and I was experiencing this game in my final moments as part of my own "imaginary world" the way Lewis did. I've never had a more visceral "this was written about me" experience consuming any other work of literature than I did playing through his story. Since I experienced this game, I bought a copy on Steam to family-share with my friends/family to explain my mental illness to them. This is the single best representation of it in art/literature I've seen to date.
    Not only did this allow me to feel like other people are dealing with the same issues I'm dealing with, but it finally allowed my family and friends to finally "get it." And it made me feel doubly stupid for almost putting my loved ones in the same circumstances as what I assume inspired the writing of Lewis's story. This is truly one of the best works of art to have ever been created.

    Edith Finch changed my life. It’s a comfort game, you see I’m horribly nostalgic to the point where I’m homesick for a home that’s no longer mine. When Edith said “The house was exactly like I remembered it. The way I'd been dreaming about it” I realized I was envious. Envious of the fact that she got to go back to her childhood home (under unfortunate circumstances) a place that held good and bad memories but memories nonetheless. It made me feel every emotion because I too want to see my childhood home again, shit I drive by it everyday and it sits there empty decaying and it makes me want to cry. But when I play this I feel that in a way I am seeing my childhood home one last time. I’m seeing all my memories and things that were left behind. Milton’s story:
    Milton wanted to pursue his dream of being an artist and the paint brush was something he admired and gave him the thought of being one.
    So sadly he left and disappeared for a long amount of time.
    Dawn (aka his mother) kept looking for him since it was her only option of getting him back. Although she wasn’t happy with the result of the discovery.
    Milton disappeared when Edith was very young. Dawn wanted Edith to not know what happened to Milton and decided to say ‘he left’,
    Eventually Edith knew from the posters that were hanging around the forest.

    Love that the title can be interpreted in several ways, Edith’s son, her diary, her family history, the house, or even the stories of you think that the Edith in the title is Edith Sr. This game is just spectacular in so many ways and I love that even the title reflects that.

      and i think walter died differently, to be realistic those tracks had stopped their routes and such, so i think the paranoia or the anxiety of the so called “curse” got to him and he died that way. barbra died i believe by her boyfriend murdering her and the press came up with something for it since he wasn’t found either which led me to believe that he did one of two things. option one being to get the hell out of the area, or option two would be to commit sewer slide so he wouldn’t be convicted of a crime.

    Mollys story always strikes me as odd. A child would not be that ravenous to eat toothpaste and Holly berries from skipping one meal. I truly believe that her mother (Edith) was abusive. The way she speaks makes me believe that it wasn’t just one meal or even two, she had possibly been hungry for days. She talks about wanting to eat her own fish, she eats gerbil food with obvious animal droppings in the bowl, she eats a whole tube of toothpaste, she eats poisonous, bitter holly berries which cause her to hallucinate and probably was the main factor in her early demise. Then whilst hallucinating she emphasised her hunger even more to the point she eats PEOPLE too. Another thing I saw is she emphasises on ‘mother’ animals e.g. mama bird, mama rabbit. That seems very significant to me as it’s her mother that is starving her. It’s almost like the only type of revenge she can take at her age and in her mentality altered state. Edith is known to be pretty selfish and strict e.g. allowing Brianna to be a child star and work at such a young age, forcing her children to sleep in the same room that memorialised their own siblings. It’s crazy.

    God this is such a great story. I've been watching it for a few days now, spacing out how much I watch everyday. I feel like apart of me was lost with every death of the Finch family. This story is just so powerful, it astonishes me how someone could go through all of that their entire life. A few quotes stuck with me, specifically "we believed in the curse so much that we made it real." I'd 10/10 recommend this story to anyone.

    this is honestly one of my favorite games. not just because of the storyline, but how creative it is with its characters, gameplay, and overall storytelling. not only is the story good, but even the art. i’m not usually a person that enjoys these types of graphics unless theres something to compensate for it, yet even without the storyline does the art do an amazing job of immersing you into the game. the graphics give the game the surreal feeling it portrays. it also makes the game feel more alive, like all the detail and mess thats in the house, which really makes it feel like a long generation of a family has lived there. overall, this game is amazing and, as i said, one of my favorite games.

(can’t help but notice it’s the same arrangement for the credits list).
    anyways, I became so emotional too. loved the game, the storyline, it was absolutely dope af. The section with Lewis blew me away the first time, how they used the constantly evolving gameplay mechanics to mirror Lewis's descent into his fantasy life, the dread and tragedy of him being lead to that moment. The last thing you see as him is the black and yellow hazard painted metal, a brief reminder of reality before it all goes black.
