    HongKong is just perfect for cyperpunk, the beauty from the outside and the ugliness in the inside, rude people, dirty streets, cramped houses, night markets, street racing at night, night clubs, illegal gambling, sky high rated violence, riot police on the streets sometimes with helmets you see in movies, a police state city in a totalitarianism country, and yea tall bright buildings, yes trust me I am a Hong Konger too. Hope more people in the world know about this small small city.

    Increasingly it is also a cultural crossroads. West and East meeting and creating a future that is constantly in tension with itself. That is very inherent to Cyberpunk.

    Cyberpunk it’s not fiction it’s the near future and Hong Kong its already there
    Edit : mega cities are being built everywhere, conscious AI and robots are on the way . Augmentations as well . Totalitarian governments and mega corporations checked . Mutations from radiation of an atom bomb ? Hiroshima Nagasaki? 🤔

    • @SorchaSublime
      @SorchaSublime 5 років тому +2

      Radiation doesn't give you the cool sci fi mutations, just cancer. Mega corporations (using the cyberpunk definition), well it would be a stretch to apply that moniker to any modern corporations. Mega cities? Nah. Nothing which exists today comes close to a megacity. The only thing which came close in terms of density was the kowloon walled city, but that was just one block and got demolished in the 90s. Nothing today comes close in terms of density in the scale of a city. Conscious ai... uh, no. We are no where near even remotely understanding what consciousness even is never mind recreating it. I will give you the augmentations part, but only because of how good prosthetic limbs are nowadays. We aren't close to actually fucking with the brain and putting computers in it yet and won't be for some time.

  • @mattb154
    @mattb154 6 років тому +6

    A brilliant video that really goes to the core of the connection between that cyberpunk (both the genre and the aesthetic) and that great city.
    One thing I find particularly interesting is how the cyberpunk aesthetic has evolved and become codified. There are undoubtedly cultural markers in cinema that have helped solidify what cyberpunk looks like - themselves influenced by HK - but I think there have also been influences from other fields. In particular, I feel but cannot prove that some of the visual tropes we associated with the genre have their roots in mid-90s computer graphics. The black/cyan/magenta colour palette that we see so often in synthwave cover art is an obvious example. As well, certain graphics programming tricks like palette cycling have probably contributed to the modern cyberpunk aesthetic. More recently, even Unicode technology probably played a role.
    Once again, this was a brilliant video. Please keep making more!

    I think that another large aspect of cyberpunk is the combining of metropolitan areas into one large city, or a megalopolis. This in mind, I think the over 120 kilometer urban sprawl of Tokyo would also make a good case for cyberpunk, not to mention the way the city looks when you are in it as well, it isn't quite the level of crazy that HK is, because it is kept cleaner, however I think that only applies to the streets, as I have seen some gnarly mishmashes of signage in commercial and mixed use areas.

    I disagree that HK should be a perfect setting for cyberpunk, at least at the moment, maybe back in the 80's & 90's. Because a lot of signs are being removed nowadays due to light pollution and a lot representations that should be regarded to a cyberpunk setting such as stalls/food stalls are all removed, at least from what I can see. So imo I think many other cities in other countries out there such as Tokyo or Seoul should be the best examples as of now.
