I absolutely love this song…..it sounds like it’s straight out of a 1940’s , Smokey piano bar.
Btw to get that sound from Roger, you use what’s called brushes, probably on a snare drum.
If you like this I think you'll also like Dreamer's Ball---very much in a similar vein.
The word" melancholy" evokes a kind of wistful sadness. This song seems to be a tip to a jazz favorite, "Stormy Weather"; in the line "I'm heading for that stormy weather soon". It's a great song from the News of the World album and really shows off Freddie's piano ability. There's another like it by Brian May in the next album, Jazz: "Dreamer's Ball".
Such a nice intimate feeling from this song...great fit with John. Yes, a small nightclub sound.
This proves the diversity of Queen’s songs
This is probably the only show where you find John Deacon seated while playing his Precision Fretless Bass. Outstanding!
The musicianship, the musicianship - it's not just raw talent, it takes a lot of practice to play piano like that and then to compose a song like that!
This song is one of my favourites. The (rock 😉) band absolutely got the blues vibe, the piano dominates and all the other instruments just supporting it by a very gently way.
He was using brushes to play his drums. They consist of metal wires(or another thin long material such as nylon) fanned out flat for a subtle sound. You will notice he played with long strokes. He was playing relatively hard, but brushes are very quiet.
You could see them in a smokey piano lounge playing this song. Melancholy is a feeling of sadness. Freddie, John and Roger had just cut their hair for the News of the World tour. Brian never cut his hair. 😂Roger is playing with whisk drumsticks which are wire brushes. They are usually used in jazz songs. Thanks for the reaction to this song. It isn't reacted to enough! Dreamer's Ball is a beautiful Brian song that is very jazzy. One of my favourite songs of his.
Tq. I have been waiting for this song.
One of my absolute favorites.
No guitar on this one.
I see a lot of people recommending dreamers ball. Must do Paris ‘79
A Brian penned ode to Elvis blues.
ty for your comment! we will get there, so far we have over 200 request in queue we take in orders, unless is patreon. so far is mostly Queen
@@CelcaReact there is a version of My Melancholy Blues with guitar from BBC Sessions released on album Queen On Air
Wow, 🥰 beautiful Freddie ❤️ this song always reminds me of Casablanca the film"Play it again Sam"😁
Freddie is "channeling" Ella Fitzgerald and George Gershwin, 1930's - 40's blues.
I love this song. I think most fans prefer the studio versions because few bands can play live like Queen can and they don't have Freddie...lol. For that reason, I think most Queen fans prefer live performances. However, sometimes Queen will do something very different to the song on the album or the video that will prompt people to point it out rather than a live performance. Usually it will be pointed out because it's unique, funny, brilliant or historically relevant and could not be replicated live. Some may simply have never been performed live, like the post 1986 Queen songs. I definitely prefer live performances because of Freddie but I also want to know as much about Queen as possible so it's worth it to me to listen to studio versions as well simply because I know they will be different from what I've heard live. They did that on purpose but you may not want to take the time to do both. We are lucky we have so many live Queen performances to use as a comparison. I depend on fellow Queen fans who have been around longer than I to point out things I may not know that are unique among the songs and even among the performances. If there are a lot of requests for some particular version of something, you can bet there is a good reason why it was pointed out but only you can decide if it's worth your time. I am not offended by what you choose either way. Thanks for the reaction!
very nice comment! your suggestion is what we did with Bring Back That Leroy Brown, because so many wanted us to look at the studie version, we did it :) ty for your comment
The implement Roger is using is called a brush. it is a series of stiff wires in the shape of a small fan with a handle. Here is an example ua-cam.com/video/gnw65KfhYJM/v-deo.html
I love this song. To me the studio version is better. Great reaction
I like this very much - but technically not so good. Restaurants in the olden days - en hyggepianist. Isn't the great difference on the drums what drum you use?? There are 5 versions of this!!
The best queen songs are not hits, I'm sure you are probably getting that, well hopefully you are
