  • Today we are going to talk about Jesus’ seemingly obscure words about wineskins and why his words were ringing in my head as I watched the new Disney film: Turning Red.
    What did Jesus mean when he told the parable about putting new wine in old wineskins?
    So we continue our Easter season series through some of Luke’s gospel and today’s reading has 3 distinctive parts that all point to the same big idea. Those three points include discussion about fasting, sewing, and wineskins and they are all really about the same big idea - WHICH has an uncanny connection to a movie I watched this week with my kids - Turning Red.
    Here is the main theme of this section of scripture - Jesus’s ways and ideas are different and incompatible with the ways and ideas of the culture he is breaking into.
    Luke 5:33-38
    33 Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.” 34 Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them-then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.

    Branch Together brings Christians together to read the Bible every day. We know as Christians that we are called to "branch out" and reach the world around us, but first we must come "together" and develop habits that help us grow to be more like the people Jesus is calling us to be. So before we Branch Out, we Branch Together. Some people might call this Daily Devotions, or Quiet Time...whatever you call it, our videos kickstart your most important daily habit.
    In addition to starting your day with Scripture, we create videos to help you study, memorize and worship.

    Further Discussion
    1)In verse 34 Jesus talks about not fasting when the groom is present. There was a common rule that you couldn’t fast during the seven day celebration of a wedding. Jesus was playing with that; he was saying that now that he is on the scene, the game has changed, the groom is here and you can’t fast while the groom is at the party!
    2)Verse 39 follows with “And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’ ” At first this was a confusing conclusion to the section we discussed today. Here is an excerpt from the Baker Exegetical Commentary on Luke that helps shed some light on it: Some argue that Jesus is saying that the Pharisees will not change, except slowly, while other people may respond quickly (Godet 1875: 1.282). This is thus a call for tolerance: accepting the existence of Judaism, Jesus asks the disciples to recognize that change from the law comes only after reflection. However, in light of Jesus’ later rejection of the Pharisees and the mention that the new wine is not even tried, it is better to see the point as, “You have set your course, you will never change your ways” (Plummer 1896: 164). There is a note of rebuke here in the realization that some people will not alter the way they look at Jesus. They reject the new way he brings. Some people will not taste the new wine of the gospel, since some tastes never change. Rejection of the new message by many in Judaism is very likely. One will not try what one does not sense the need for. {Bock, D. L. (1994). Luke: 1:1-9:50 (Vol. 1, p. 522). Baker Academic.}

    Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

    It's so true how corrupt our society has become through everyday advertising, movies an TV, and even songs. As followers of Jesus, it's our job to share the glory of God, to share the light of Jesus throughout the entire world. Nomatter who you are or what your going through, through the power of Jesus, we can become new wine or new creation. Thank you Branch Together for another fantastic video, and God Bless!

      I think our society has always been corrupt. Christianity doesn’t exactly mix with American society either, nor does it mix with any other government system. Christ has to reign as King in our hearts. Then the Scripture in Jeremiah 31 would be fulfilled:
      And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord.

    I found this teaching so interesting and so eye opening. The millennial/gen z culture is so full of messages of how best to serve ourselves in all aspects of our life. It’s hard not to believe this to be the ‘right’ way to live when it is so heavily promoted by others and on social media. Thank you for the very thought provoking message and for all your videos.

    I don’t know about letting the inner demon out but I do think yeah the idea of not pushing the bad stuff away is kinda sus. It feels very like embrace the sin.

    I humbly disagree even though I love your message.
    I think this movie has more to do with not ignoring your true feelings rather than “letting your inner demon” out. Kind of exposing “toxic positivity” culture. If we completely ignore our “dark parts” they can never come to the light to evolve. Keeping it locked in isn’t the way, when Mei’s feelings became overwhelming, that’s when “the beast” came out. I personally thought that it’s a great metaphor to what happens inside us if we ignore our feelings.
    Confession (talking it out) and bringing those ugly feelings to Jesus is how we evolve. He can’t redeem us if we aren’t honest about our inner darkness.

    • @BranchTogether
      @BranchTogether  2 роки тому

      Hello Adam. No, none of the leaders on Branch Together are catholic. I suspect you ask that because we mentioned Lent. Many Christian traditions celebrate Lent. We simply use the season as a time to focus on Jesus in expectation of Easter.

    Why don't you think this was more of a generational metaphor (similar to "can't teach an old dog new tricks") rather than what you are suggesting?

      You miss his point. That's the problem with a lot of Christian teaching because it does not address what really happens in the world that people can relate to. If he does not use relevant examples, he will be preaching based on theory - like from an ivory tower far away.
