    Please note: I was informed after making the model/video that radial engines require odd number of cylinders. I am not an expert in radial engines, and I only tried to design something that is aesthetically appealing. This model may be "incorrect" as a model, but it is still an interesting project so I will upload as it is. I may consider designing an update in the future.

    Attach magnets to the pistons and wind coils around the piston cavity and you made a radial solenoid generator.

    Try an odd number to reduce equilibrium counter forces
    High speed props are odd numbered blades to reduce pulsing of an exiting and entering blades through the surface of water (surface piercing high speed} and hydraulic pumps, Piston type, are odd for the same reason, smooth fluid transition over ports

    Radial engines use odd numbers of cylinders per crank throw. This is because a 4stroke engine has 720 degrees of rotation per cycle not 360. Dividing 720 by an even number will put a cylinder at 0 and 360 for example. All even cylinder count engines with an even firing order will have pairs cylinders at top dead center simultaneously and that could only work with multi row radials. Sure 2strokes could work fine but they would need a positive displacement supercharger to do the pumping like a Detroit 71 or 92 series diesel. With odd cylinder the firing order skips every other cylinder and gets to the skipped cylinders on the second revolution. Radials also have a "master rod" where a certain cylinder has a longer rod that is also the central hub with pins to hold the rods for other cylinders so as the engine goes around the hub wobbles but is still stable. With just a floating hub it's not going to be controlled and do whatever it wants.

    Almost all radial engined have an odd number of pistons. It's required for a four stroke radial to work properly and be balanced.
    This could only work as a two stroke or compressddair engine, but it's not really a good model for radial engines.

    saw one flaw in your design, one of the pistons should be locked, driving the others in their cycles, which also accounts for Tim Deshazers point of odd number cylinders.

    • @EzequielPR
      @EzequielPR 5 років тому +1

      He locked one, look at 4:27

    • @JeffMunson
      @JeffMunson 5 років тому

      I think the number of cylinders is dictated by the firing sequence. An even number won't allow an even, smooth firing sequence, at least in a four-stroke config. Odd numbers allow for equal-sized arcs between cylinder TDCs on a firing stroke over two full rotations necessary for four-stroke function.

    • @plusalphadesigns
      @plusalphadesigns  5 років тому +1

      I'm aware of the problem with even cylinders, but I believe I have the constraint of the pistons correct. 7 of the rods are free to rotate on both ends, except for 1, which is free only on piston end and locked on hub end. correct me if I'm confusing something

  • @ihaveone6086
    @ihaveone6086 5 років тому

    Firstly let me say good work and well illustrated mechanics. However, radial engines can not function with even number of cylinders (otherwise the camshaft complexity would over ride the advantage of air cooled radial with single camshaft the firing of cylinders would be every other cylinder.... example 5 cylinder engine would fire 1,3,5,2,4 back to 1....)..... so just as a thought..... to make it a realistic educational toy, a redesign to 3, 5, 7 OR 9 cylinders may be a good new project.... (happily retired aerospace engineer here.... just for those that would like to argue....)

    • @plusalphadesigns
      @plusalphadesigns  5 років тому

      yes, you are absolutely correct, and I am aware of the problem as I have also written in the description as a “disclaimer.” I will consider publishing a correction once I get a chance. thanks for pointing out!

    • @ihaveone6086

      Something just hit me.... would be nice if you could incorporate the camshaft as well with electric tracks and vipers connect to different colour light emitting diodes so that intake, compression, ignition and exhaust strokes are distinguishable... just a thought.... it might be really neat.... or you can eliminate crank shaft all together, and use the crank housing in the back for electric connections.... (second option would be much simpler)

  • @tomvlucht2414
    @tomvlucht2414 5 років тому

    the idea is great. BUT a 8 cylinder star piston engine will in practice not work. Any star engine has to have an odd number of cylinders, otherwise the cylinder firing will not work. When a specific cylinder has been fired, the opposite cylinder has to fire next. This is nececarry because of friction of the engine. Of course there are 18 cylinder star engines, but then this machine has a 2rows of 9 cylinders, like f.e. the B29.
