The app used in this video: apps.apple.com...
The app used in this video is called InsTuner free. I’m an iPhone girl so this is not available on Android but if anyone has any good suggestions for Android apps please comment below!
apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
The target notes are G3, D4, A4, and E5 👍
@@reubeno3475 brilliant, thanks for the suggestion!
That same tuner that you mentioned I cannot get it to E5 it says E4 just fine but not E5 and I'm afraid of breaking the string and the violin
@@nicolenya you might be surprised, I’ve found that with some of the violins I tune in school when it feels like they’re at the limit, there’s sometimes a bit more unless the pegs are getting stuck (a separate issue I’ll address in another video at some point!) If the strings are particularly old or poor quality it could snap but you only know if you try unfortunately! Go slowly though 👍
As a 12 year old playing the violin this video made more sense then others becaus of how simple she explained it and i didnt get confused as much as the others
Thank you! This is a marvelous resource, I appreciate you taking the time to publish this for the internet's benefit!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching 😊
New sub here, I just found this channel. I appreciate this video SO MUCH as you explain it all very clearly. I was never a real player, had only taken about a year of lessons, but still loved practicing with my little student violin. Now, my violin is hopelessly out of tune as I haven't practiced in several years. I had given up getting it tuned myself and have been saving up to take it to a music store for help, but still feared never being able to get it in tune on my own. I'm going to search for an android tuning app and give your method a try later today. TY
Thanks for your message, I’m glad you found it useful! I think I’ve linked an android app that was recommended in the comments, it’s called DaTuner. Hope you managed to get it tuned, more content coming soon 👍
Thank you so much, this is was thorough and well. The app was great too!
My pleasure, really glad you found the video useful and thanks for the kind words. It’s a great app isn’t it! 👍
Thank you so much it helps a lot in my violin 🎻🎻😭🙏🙏
Thanks ,helped a lot❤️
Awesome! Very happy the vid helped you 👍
Thanks, this was really helpful 😊
Amethyst Music Tuition I once tuned the Violin to FCGD & that tuning is "Whole Step down Tuning for Violin".
The reason I did that is because I found music for "Star Spangled Banner for Violin tuned down a whole step" so I can play along with the original recording but with easier fingerings.
CircuitsAndStrings 2 Mr Stern wow, heavy metal violin! 🤘
CircuitsAndStrings 2 Mr Stern that sounds pretty cool! 😎
@@ThePinfieldsMusic Not just heavy metal, but for vocal accompaniment in song covers. I did that with a 7 String Electronic Violin tuned Ab, Eb, Bb, F, C, G, D so I could sing in a lower key.
@@ThePinfieldsMusic That tuning is also called "Cajun Tuning" & the reasons Cajun guys do it too is because in Cajun Music the C Diatonic Accordion is so popular, that they require the fiddle to play an Open C String in order to blend in, take a listen:ua-cam.com/video/HHnpag9TCXs/v-deo.html
Hi, when I try to tune my D string it’s says it’s a G or an A. I can’t get it to recognize the string D
It might be very flat and need tuning up with the large pegs first. Once it recognises it as a D, or at least a C/C#, then you can start tuning from the small pegs. Hope that helps! 😊
@@ThePinfieldsMusic thank you, II’l try that
love you!
I'm gonna fix it right now 😃😃
What if the app doesn’t guess the tune right when I flick A it says F (I’m using the same app)
Does it say F4? If so you’re still a fair way below the correct note. You would need to tune from the large pegs first until you hit A or G# as shown in the latter half of this video. Hope that helps!
So when I went to tune the D string it said it was a C. So I tried to use the pegs like you said too but my string became super lose and won’t even make a sound now. What do I do?
You may need to try taking the string out and rewinding it around the big peg, as it might have slipped out of the hole. If the peg itself keeps slipping, you can draw some pencil on it and the graphite should add enough friction to prevent this. One other idea - perhaps the string has broken and needs replacing. Strings can perish over time so it’s worth checking that the whole string is in tact. It might have snapped in the peg box so it won’t be immediately obvious. Try loosening enough that you can take the string off the violin and take a look at it. Hope this helps!
I didn't understand the name of the turning app you used! How can I find it?
It’s called insTuner free 😊 apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
Hi I’ve just brought my first violin and I’m tuning it using an app and for some reason a lot of the strings have been tightened to the max using the minor tuners at the bottom but still I’m getting g-138, d-141, a-341 e-277 and I cannot tighten anymore 🙈 please help
Sounds like they are still too loose - on the second half of this video I focus on how to tune your violin using the big pegs which is what you would need to do at this point. Hope that helps!
Hey I've a silly question, how is that app connected to violin or... Yeah??😭
Pls tell me wht the app is because I didn’t understand wht app u said pls
Suhana Shrestha the app is called InsTuner free, you can find it here 😊 apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
ur explanation is easy to understand. thank u
@@rchen8464 Thank you!
Do you know if any are available on the playstore? My A and E strings are really out of tune
I’ve heard that DaTuner is good, hope that helps!

What is the app called because I just bought my very first violin 😊
It’s an iOS app called InsTuner free 🙂
apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
Hey! What is the difference between E4, E5, E6 and so on?
They are different pitches of the same note. The lower the number, the lower the pitch. So, E4 is the lowest out of the 3 notes you mentioned and E6 is the highest 👍
@@ThePinfieldsMusic Thank you so much
The app isn’t recognizing any of my strings as the correct strings 😭what do I do
Your strings are most likely very flat, you would need to keep turning away from you from the large pegs (2nd half of this video) until the note is in range. It’s unlikely the notes would be higher than they need to be as strings tend to slacken over time. You’re looking for the following target notes - G3, D4, A4, and E5. Hope that helps!
Hello can i ask? What is the app again?
InsTuner free 👍

Hi what app is this? I need to tune my violin now
The app is called insTuner free 😊 apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
Hey
I always get E4 instead of E5
What should I do ??
Hi thanks for your question, you’ll need to turn the big peg for the E string away from you (as shown in the latter part of this video) as your E is an octave too low. Hope that helps!
Could also be a tuner error - have a listen to the sound of the violin strings (there are apps for this, or search UA-cam) and check it by ear as you wouldn’t want to push it too far and risk breaking a string!
@@ThePinfieldsMusic thank you...
I've a silly question, how is that app connected to violin or... Yeah 😭
The app uses your devices microphone to pick up the sound from the instrument. It then recognises the pitch of the note and this is then displayed on screen. No external microphones or cables are required. Hope that helps!
Can u tell me a good tuner app plz... anyone?
apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027 this is the one I used for the video 👍
App name?
There’s a link to the app in the pinned comment 👍
Why does it say b on mine
It depends which string you're talking about - a bit of music theory knowledge is useful here. There are 12 musical notes in total and 7 different musical letters from A to G. An out of tune violin could show any one of those 12 pitches, so you're not necessarily going to see G, D, A and E when you start tuning. So you are either too sharp or too flat. The notes you are aiming for are G3, D4, A4 and E5. Hope that helps!
I don't find the app
apps.apple.com/gb/app/instuner-free-chromatic-tuner/id603425027
It’s an apple application but similar apps will be available for android 👍
Is it eastern tuning or western tuning?
Hi thanks for your question! The app uses equal temperament (western tuning) 👍
@Flower8 There is really only one traditional way to tune a violin - G D A E. Some players may use unconventional tuning methods if playing Irish or American fiddle music or perhaps Middle Eastern music. As a classical musician, I’ve only ever tuned mine the standard way! 😊
