  • With the firmware 2.0 finally released, Panasonic has offered owners of the GH5 an amazing new way to distribute content with their new Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). This new profile allows users to record content for HDR distribution. But how do you actually set it up? In this video, I break down the best way to record your HDR content while maintaining the necessary metadata to produce beautiful images on an HDR video.

    Could you explain what you’re getting by moving HDR slider on Atomos, please?
    I mean how do you determine the correct exposure, I was under impression one should put it to the max level ande then check if it is clipping or not.

      It depends on your camera. Most cameras log profile give a 2 stop over expose leniency.

    How will the HDR content show omn a standard rec709 TV?

      Paul Burgess Unless you have an HDR monitor it will convert itself to a SDR rec709 image and loose the HDR information.

      I have a shogun but that is not my question.
      'Iff I record in camera as you show isn HDR and edit in HDR then can this be shown on a non-hdr tv which is the bulk of the TYV's out there? Also FCPX does not see the HDR footage at present- what to do?

      @JamesJacksonFilmz  6 років тому +1

      Hi Paul:Apologies, I am not exactly sure what you are asking. Are you asking if you record and edit HLG can you put it up on a SDR TV? Or are you asking if you can Film rec709, edit in HDR and put it up on an SDR TV? Either way, the only way to view content in HDR is through an HDR workflow and on an HDR TV, though the latter has a far more complicated process of an already heavy post workflow. Trying to put HDR content that you edited in an HDR post workflow will simply take the HDR content and convert it to a rec709 as soon as your TV detects it. Keep in mind that HLG is really designed to be directly sent to your HDR distribution (HDR TV, UA-cam ect). The codec was design to go with HDR Broadcasting like BBC, so it wasn't really intended to be edited. You can edit it, it's just makes things more complicated as you have to make sure your editing program properly imports and set to an HDR workflow. In terms of editing programs, Davinci Resolve (Full version not free) is the only one I know of that has the capability of editing HDR content properly. I do believe there is another program but I cannot think of it off the top of my head. I would check out CRFTSHO's videos on HLG for the GH5 as they broken down how to properly set up HDR editing in Resolve and they do mention another program that can work with it.

      That was a very informative reply but I think the question was much simpler and something that I am also curious about, not having viewed much HDR content myself. James you mentioned that the HLG footage looked under-exposed on the rec709 screen on the GH5, but looked properly exposed on the ATAMOS HDR screen because on there we can view the extra image data. So that's what I am curious about: does the arbitrary conversion from HDR to SDR force the image to appear under or over exposed, or altered in any way, now lacking the extra and more precise information built into the HDR footage? Or will it just look like a rec709 image with the limited data but a proper exposure (if I set the exposure correctly of course)? This question might also help people making cross-platform content and who want the videos to look good on all platforms. I'm guessing, without experience in this workflow, the solution is to grade the footage into 2 separate projects, one for HDR with the right hardware / software, and one for SDR in rec709, assuming that HDR does not translate well directly to SDR.
      And then going further, is there any benefit to shooting HLG for SDR content? I've seen demonstrations that claim it is in a way easier to work with than LOG gamma since very little grading is required but you still get good latitude vs a standard profile. I mean, seeing footage shot on HLG, well-graded looks gorgeous. But maybe a good colorist was at work.

    Hi James, thank you for your video. Just have few questions left...sorry I am a beginner:-). The MP4 HEVC H.265 codec works great with HLG. But it is limited to 72Mbps and 4: 2: 0 10bit. The 72mbps H.265 look amazingly good. I do not see any artifacts. The codec is obviously really good and superior to the H.264. But what I ask myself: Is the restriction to 4: 2: 0 a disadvantage? Should I better go for 4:2:2 (which would not be available in MP4 HEVC H.265). So what would you say, is it relevant to film in 4: 2: 2? The H.265 mode offers only 4: 2: 0 10 bits. Does that make any difference in quality for HLG recording? How are the experiences there? Thanks so much in advance.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz  5 років тому

      Hi Holm. So HLG is not actually designed for it to be edited. The codec is designed for Broadcast specifically, or to be sent directly to UA-cam or other platform that support HDR content.
      If you wish to take it into post then you don't have to limit it to the HEVC codec. But also know if you are planning to deliver in HDR you can do it already in V-log L because log is an HDR gamma. Also no matter what codec you choose HLG has a more narrow color space than V-log L.
      I hope my answer helped

    THANK YOU! This is the 1st YT I've seen that says you need to record HLG with an external recorder. I don't have a Ninja, so while facinating, most of this is over my head. After seeing this I can see HLG is future thing for most people. BUT... maybe you can help me out with how H.265, and HEVC work on the GH5 vs. the color gamut. I'm trying to make less work, not more.
    On the GH5, everything recorded internally other than 6K video seems to be H264. I can't figure out how to get HEVC in any mode other than 6K photo. This is all new to me, just trying if figure out how to use the GH5 for H256 / HEVC.
    FCPX 10.4 & High Sierra ROCKS. Now you can import HEVC video shot in the 6K photo mode directly into FCPX with sound, no converter required.
    6K just looks so much better and requires less color correction.... I don't understand what's going on. V-LOG is a major PITA, even with the new camera LUT built into FCPX, I can't get it to look as good the other mode; 6K photo simply looks amazing. However all other Video options I've tried still say h.264.
    I'm confused, does H265/HEVC help color or only motion or both..
    Thanks, hope this was too long winded, just trying to learn.

      Hey there man.
      Please accept my apologies. This somehow got placed in the spam folder and I did not see it until now. To help answer some of your questions.
      First let me be clear. You don't NEED a external recorder to RECORD HLG. It records perfectly fine in camera. However, You will need an external recorder to VIEW and EXPOSE HLG correctly as the LED screen on the GH5 is not designed for HDR viewing.
      1) To get HEVC activated you need to check your recording settings. HEVC will not show up for certain recording formats first make sure your in MOVIE MODE or one of the Custom settings for Movie. If you have your camera set up for photos HEVC will not pop up. After that, you simply just change your recording format in the Video tab of the menu to HEVC and whalla.
      2) Remember 6K mode is really designed for Photos not video and VLog is designed for video not photos. With VLog it's a bit more tricky as you will have to start out with the VLog-Rec709 Standard LUT (you can download it for free from Panasonic's website) to really make it work. Once you use the standard Vlog LUT, the images will definitely pop more and look better. Unless you edit and grade in DaVinci resolve, Grading VLog straight is not advisable.
      3) H265/HEVC helps with Colors for HDR Content. Unless you are planning to deliver in HDR, the HEVC is not advisable as it's only usable for HLG.
      I hope this was helpful with your answers. Again sorry for the late response.

    Hi,
    Thanks for this great video.
    I need to make HDR demo video in one month for a real important issue and this video helped me a lot to make my mind.
    About the post production, I couldn't find part2 video, if you have it please share link.
    My video should look great on OLED TVs. Do you think Gh5 is enough to make promotional demo videos for OLED ?
    This is my first time on HDR, I don't even know how to edit it. With Adobe, is it possible to use UHDTV which is my target tv as a monitor?
    Right now I am thinking on renting gh5s, atom inferno and DJI ronin. Do you have any other suggest? Are these enough?
    Also could you write some important tips for editing HDR.
    Waiting for your reply, BRs

      Hey there! I'm still working on Part 2. I am planning to have it up sometime this week, it's been asked for quite some time, but I wanted to make sure I had everything I needed as well as the right information before I released the video. Thanks you for your Patience.
      The GH5 is definitely capable for exposing and monitoring your shot with an OLED TV. The editing is simple overall it's just understanding the necessary steps in delivery that can get a bit complicated. But once you figure it out, it's a breeze to deliver in HDR. Again stay tune this week for the video on post workflow.
      I would honestly get the Zhiyun Crane 2 over the ronin. The ronin is great if you have the time for set up. But if you are in a fast past work environment, the crane 2 is far better and far easier to set up. You can even turn it into a two handed system like the ronin with the Dual handle, which is what I use for my gimbal work.
      What post program are you typically using?

      James Jackson Films thank you for answer, I am waiting for part2 :)
      I generally use avid on my projects, but this time for hdr I think I am gonna use premiere.
      Thank you for stating that dji setup takes time, a faster solution would be better, I am going to think on crane. I have never used both of them, so easy one will be better :)

    Your GH5 says on the top center "HDMI MODE2". Doesn't that mean that you don't output a clean HLG signal? I think you have to go to HDMI Rec Output, choose HLG View Assist (HDMI) and turn that off. Once you have done this, you will get HLG over HDMI.

    • @tylerjohnson1352
      @tylerjohnson1352 6 років тому +1

      No I don't think so. MODE2 is just a way to monitor the HLG signal with priority for sky or something else...HLG view assist can be off, Mode 1 or 2 and doesnt effect output signal to Inferno. I just tried it on mine and no issues. HLG over HDMI just works if you have HLG profile active on your camera...the monitor options don't change the signal.

      I know this is a late response but I feel this is still worth replying in case someone else is inquiring about SD cards. Essentially lexar has a series of SD cards that they never updated the data info so there's SD cards that maybe slower than others even though they show the same info.
      Short answer unless your card specifically says it's certified v90, its basically a game of russian roulette to see of the card will actually work with All-I high speed codecs.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz  6 років тому +1

      ChipsLab you won't see the difference on the ninja. Its only using it as a monitor. The difference will be if you decide to take your shots into an editing program, as I don't believe it will save all the Rec2020 data needed to edit HDR unless you shoot with the HEVC codec.
