I’m one of the rare few who prefer’s the Wolverine brown costume over the tiger stripe one. I don’t think a character like wolverine would wear something so bright, he’d likely be wearing brown instead.
And that's the beauty of Mafex. Sure you're paying almost $100, but it's a one-and-done figure. You don't have to go back every 8 months and repurchase the latest upgraded version like Hasbro's hustle. They make the definitive version the first time. Even if Hasbro started immediately making every single figure pinless, with drop-down legs, ball jointed torsos and waists, etc.; you'd still have that gummy cheaper plastic. I've been without air conditioning for almost 2 months now, and the only figures in my office falling off the shelves in droves is the hasbro figures.
@@SpectacularKorin Absolutely! Between them and NECA, I absolute favourite action figure companies. Jada is definitely making their way in the top 3. I didn't own or handle a single Mafex figure until I bought ESB Fett about 5 years ago. Immediately fell in love. Then I got the RoboCop 2 figure, then started getting the comic figures when they became a thing. I mean they're not perfect in terms of capturing the exact look of the source material/artists they're going for, but they capture the essence well. It's not just the designs, but the plastic they use, engineering, and fluidity of all of those parts that make them something you have to tangibly experience. And I really love how everything is put together like a sturdy model kit. Instead of an arm breaking off (even some hasbro figures I've had have broken), it'll fall off to where you can just pop it back in.
I collect Legends and wish I collected MAFEX instead, but I just can't justify the cost. Marvel Legends is like a cheap bag of assorted candy. Does the job, hits the spot and you get a ton of variety without spending too much, but it is quantity over quality. MAFEX is like a handmade artisanal candy you get from a small shop. Expensive, but you are paying for the experience. It's meant to be savored, not consumed.
One of the things I really like about the Mafex figs is that they are obviously better than the Legends, but you can display them with Legends and they fit right in. Cyclops, Psylocke, Wolverine, and Gambit have all replaced their Legends counterparts on my 90's X-Men shelf, but the Legends hold their own. I doubt Medicom will ever make an Archangel or Colossus or Bishop or Jubilee. So the way forward is to buy imports for the main characters and use Legends to fill in those gaps in the display.
Only flaw with mashed is that they feel weak, like when you move a mashed around in concerned with breaking it. With legends i feel more comfortable moving them. For me mafex are little statues find the pose leave them and change again,
8:55 I think the smirk is supposed to capture Wolverine's joyous _'I'm about to rip you a new one'_ expression...but you could look at it in so many different ways. So, so good for the ACBA ppl.
What really sets mafex apart from legends is they do way better shoulders. Legends likes to drop the shoulders too low. Look how much better the silhouette is on Mafex Wolverine when standing next to Legend Wolverine. The shoulders go along way!!
Yeah, the Legends neck is way too long. I always got around that by posing him crouched over, but it always bugged me for more neutral poses. I love that Legends figure, but the Mafex is definitely stepping into its place on the shelf.
Of course Mafex are better than Marvel legends as even when you ignore shipping and customs fee's, they're still nearly three times the price at minimum. Even though i do think they are superior in almost every way I still don't think they justify such a huge difference in price, especially since Hasbro adopted the new face printing tech.
The circles on the packaging is a large-scale halftone print. It's a style of printing from the vintage days of comics and other thing to simulate a full splash of colour while using less ink. It's an effect you can add to digital photos, too, that can give you a "retro" or "comic" look. That does make it better to look at on this package if you don't like it, but there IS a reason for it.
Yeah, and a lot of them have it. What I guess I didn't articulate well is the fact they left off the pics and graphics they usually plaster all over the package along with it to break up that hypnotic effect. But I don't think I said it was bad?
Being a child of the 80s this is the Wolverine I grew up with and so far the best brown variant I have seen yet. I hope to have this in my collection one day!
I’ve teased you in the past for being a “pusher”, but you’re really not…you just highlight what makes figures awesome! You definitely sold me on this one….I was content with my Legends, but seeing this side by side with the other ML X-Men? Yeah, this is the Wolverine figure I’ve dreamt of since I was a kid!
Mafex should get into the accessory pack game. If they released a Wolverine set (or Marvel/DC variety packs) that had new clawed hands (and gripping hands), some slashing effects, a gold buckled belt, etc., those would sell incredibly well. I've thought about removing one of those standard Wolverine belts off of a retro brown suit, but not sure if I can get one off by popping parts off. It'd be easy with removing the Mafex one's waist, but Legends is another story....and I really don't want to cut it.
That's a John Byrne costume design, not Jim Lee. The dots are reminiscent of the older comics this debuted in where the coloring of the pages was a bunch of tiny color dots that you'd see if you looked up close.
Jim Lee didn't design the yellow and blue costume either, he drew wolverine in both costumes the thing that maker's this a "Lee" Wolvie is the belt with the the X logo ( though he drew both aswell)
So much of this figure is appealing...but for the price point, I just really need that paint to be better. This is cleaner, but it still feels a bit off. Paint should not rub when engaging basic articulation either. For $100 the QC ought to be better. My sense is he ought to be bulkier as well, but that's a nitpick.
A great review of a figure I am buying. I really appreciate the time you spent on the articulation and I had fun watching this. Thank you for this review and well done seriously it's one of the best I've seen and thank you
Thanks...Figure looks great..Glad I did not try to chase the legends one which is so expensive now at the aftermarket..like 4-5x it's original price, might as well jump a little bit more for a higher quality Japanese made product.
I'm pretty new to Mafex, but is it common for them to be very loose feeling? My Psylocke just seems to be so floppy and well as my Cyclops. Also my Psylocke's hands that came attached fall off extremely easy. Good thing I don't want to use those anyway.
Hey Robo, that peg for the head/neck looks so delicate and slim; is that the case? It looks like it would snap or bend with not much pressure at all. I do not own any Mafex figures. Wolverine and Psylocke are my favorite X characters and I am thinking about taking the plunge into the Mafex line, as I am frustrated with Legends. I always trust your opinion, fine sir and just want your input. Thanks for all you do and the quality reviews and comparisons. You have a life-long follower and supporter of your channel and content.
That neck joint is common with MAFEX, and I've never had a problem with any of them. I highly recommend Wolverine, Psylocke.....maybe not. I'm looking at head options, and the articulation in the torso kinda gets away from itself at times.
The smirking head seems to me like it’d be in the situation you referenced at the start of the video. Wolverine smirking, claws out on one hand and gesturing the enemy over with the other. I could swear that very panel exists but I can’t seem to find it 😆 anyway, happy holidays Robo!
Yeah, but I shot that waaay after the actual review, haha! And now you have me picturing that panel too. Or cover. So much good Wolvie art out there. Enjoy the holidays and be safe!
So happy with this Wolverine. Great review and comparison w the tiger striped Wolvie. I def prefer the brown and yellow over the tiger striped costume.
I'd be so awesome if we could interchange the belts. When I think brown suit Wolverine, I think of that big ol' red belt with a normal buckle. And man, wouldn't it be awesome if the claws were interchangeable/alternate clawed hands for each release. There's no Can of Beams switchin' with Mafex unfortunately.
Damn 🤯 that looks amazing. I'm more of a yellow costume Wolverine fan myself, but the claws on this version are definitely superior. Hopefully Revoltech will take a "stab" at this look 👏🤣 (see what I did there?) *Snikt*

I wish there were a 12 inch of this brown wolverine, gambit, and psylocke, all toleranced the exact same way it would be a perfect dream come true!
As a lifelong Wolverine comic book fan but a fairly new action figure collecter, I'm feeling pretty smug. I own this figure, and I now do not need another logan. For me, it's literally perfect.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pre order Jean and hope for the best. And hope wolverine, psylocke & gambit get a reissue. Mafex unmasked sculpts usually come out a little soft for my liking.
Dammit Robo! Now I'm even more impatient for my shipment to arrive! Thanks for the heads up on the potential for paint chip. Will try to keep that in mind.
I love mafex but they need to make their paint a little bit better it’s ridiculous if you don’t keep these basically and Museum poses to get scratched very grateful you showed that I’m not gonna be getting this figure just based off of the fact that they painted the brown over the yellow I don’t get it really for that price it should’ve been molded if they don’t have that good of paint
I believe…..fingers crossed….my wife got me this for X-mas! ( total pun intended there ) It may just be me but I took a sneak feel of the present and it feels and is the same size as a mafex package . I’m pretty sure it is a figure anyways.
3:46 I never noticed the design of the costume has arm holes that goes that far under the arms. Like, look at all that exposed skin...scandalous! But that's crazy it's sculpted and painted like that instead of just being straight up orangish/whatever like all the rest.
If you don’t mind… can you let us know what shipping an final cost after ordering from amiami?? Been wanting to order from them. Just can’t seem to get a final answer… appreciate you!!!

@Steve Vento how is it happy? Tbh it looks both fun and menacing in my opinion. Original tiger stripe suit all the way!!!
I don't think he would choose brown either I think wolverine would choose black
Is that a rare stance!? I’ve always preferred it and felt like that was a prevalent opinion…

That ones gonna be dope as hell
I believe…..fingers crossed….my wife got me this for X-mas! ( total pun intended there )
It may just be me but I took a sneak feel of the present and it feels and is the same size as a mafex package .
I’m pretty sure it is a figure anyways.
Ooooo, good luck! Toys under the tree, I miss that!
I’m so glad this suit got a spot in the Deadpool x Wolverine movie
3:46 I never noticed the design of the costume has arm holes that goes that far under the arms. Like, look at all that exposed skin...scandalous! But that's crazy it's sculpted and painted like that instead of just being straight up orangish/whatever like all the rest.
What is the best website to find this figure and other Mafex?
