I was looking for someone to give me a good workflow to start with, I was so unsure of how to go about organizing tiles and modifying them in terms of what layers to use and stuff like that. This seems perfect for me, of course I will slightly modify as I learn what pains me personally but this is a great workflow

Another excellent tutorial! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge here. Tile sets and backgrounds are my biggest weaknesses atm. This helps my game dev :D Do primarily work in top down or do you like 2D platforming as well? Level design is tough!

Thank you!! Yes I think that's a good idea, maybe a more general introduction to tile making. When I first started out I watched adam c younis videos, so you can check out his channel as well. And thank you for the sub! I'll try to make more videos
yes, you can do that. you can look into the size of the camera/game window too. if you have the camera zoom out more, you can still have a lot of details on the screen even if your tiles are 16x16. cause when all these tiles are arranged in batch, the outline of a tile tends to blend in with the whole batch. so practically you're seeing the resolution of the whole area, even camera/window instead of seeing the details on a single tile. There are cases where its better to upsize your tile. For example, if you're making a sandbox game and it requires the player to interact with each single tile then yes the player would pay attention to the details on a single tile (and that's relating to tile resolution). Then it would be nice if the tile looked more detailed. These are just some of my suggestions. I'd say, experiment with all of them and see which one suits your style the most!
@@hanapixelme My concern is, that the ground might look too blurred from up above. My belly is telling me to rather go for 32x32. But I know what you mean, the area can still look ok while every single tile is "simpler". Alot to figure out. Your videos are super helpful though, keep em coming! :)
@@LaserGadgets i think if it actually looks blurry then you can have pixel perfect camera on (depending on the program that u’re using). If not, or if its already enabled but the issue is still there than you can upsize to a 32x32. Its pretty convinient to go for that size cause from where your old tiles are, you can just stack 4 of them together. Which is pretty convinient, so ye, no need to worry, just test it out and see how it looks
I'm confused on one thing. How do you know how big to make the tile or the big patch of grass? At 9:05, you have a big square that overlaps a lot of tiles in the center of the view, not sure how to use this exactly or where to apply it. Just grab sections of it for use later?
So you can decide how big or small you want your tiles to be. In her case she added a grid of 16 * 16 (you can see it while she’s working) and it helps her to see where each tile ends. Also she added a background layer to see how well the new tiles will look with dirt. I believe she’d delete that before saving the tiles. In game engines, you import the tile set you made and tell it what the dimensions are.
I didn't understand the colour value bit :(( Does that mean I just have to make sure I don't use the tile colours in my main character? Or I have to use a whole different palette for the tiles? Or I have to add that layer to change the colours when drawing tiles only? I'm sorry I got confuseeed :(
no worries! preferebly, like you said, we should have different palettes for different objects. Doing this would also mean that there's no color shared between objects (meaning you shouldn't use tile color on character). Doing this will avoid color overlapping. E.g., [Color Overlapping] if the character has a same green scarf color as the grass, when our character walks on grass, we can't see the green scarf. Or simply, the color green on the scarf overlapped with the color green on the grass makes it really hard for players to see the scarf. As for the color value layer, its like something you can toggle to check if they have overlapping value. You can check out more about how color values explains why some color, though arent the same, are still deemed "similar", which causes color overlapping (or simply - it's as if you're using one color though you're using two colors for each object) here: ua-cam.com/video/gJ2HOj22gDo/v-deo.html (he does a very good job at explaining it :D ) But these are like good practices, so it's not like you have to follow it 100%. It's just that it will make it easier for players to see your character or your background. Sometimes you can break the rule if you're going for a smaller palette. Like if you're doing a 2-3 color game or like a Gameboy palette, then certain colors can overlap. But if you're just starting out with colors, I'd recommend you go for something with more colors. Hope that answers your questions. If you still have more that u're unsure, feel free to ask

what is the size for each tile you are doing?
It's 16x16
Would it make sense to do tiles in "higher resolution" and shrink them a bit in unity so they look a bit less blurred / sharper with more details?
yes, you can do that. you can look into the size of the camera/game window too. if you have the camera zoom out more, you can still have a lot of details on the screen even if your tiles are 16x16. cause when all these tiles are arranged in batch, the outline of a tile tends to blend in with the whole batch. so practically you're seeing the resolution of the whole area, even camera/window instead of seeing the details on a single tile.
There are cases where its better to upsize your tile.
