The human respiratory system is a vital network of organs and tissues that work together to help us breathe. It supplies the body with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism. Here’s a detailed look at the parts of the respiratory system and the mechanism of breathing:
Parts of the Respiratory System
Nose and Nasal Cavity
Nose: The primary entrance for outside air into the respiratory system. The nostrils (nares) lead to the nasal cavity.
Nasal Cavity: Warms, moistens, and filters the air. It contains mucus and cilia that trap dust, pollen, and other particles.
Pharynx (Throat)
A muscular tube that serves as a pathway for both air and food. It connects the nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx and esophagus.
Larynx (Voice Box)
Located below the pharynx, the larynx houses the vocal cords. It also protects the trachea by preventing food and drink from entering the airway.
Trachea (Windpipe)
A tube that extends from the larynx to the bronchi. It is reinforced with C-shaped cartilage rings that keep it open, allowing air to pass freely to the lungs.
Bronchi and Bronchioles
Bronchi: Two main branches from the trachea that lead into each lung. The bronchi further divide into smaller bronchioles.
Bronchioles: Tiny branches of the bronchi that spread throughout the lungs, leading to the alveoli.
Lungs
Two spongy organs located in the chest cavity. Each lung is divided into lobes (three in the right lung and two in the left lung). The lungs are where gas exchange occurs.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles. They are surrounded by capillaries and are the site of gas exchange. Oxygen passes from the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the alveoli.
Diaphragm and Intercostal Muscles
Diaphragm: A dome-shaped muscle located below the lungs. It plays a key role in breathing by contracting and relaxing to change the volume of the chest cavity.
Intercostal Muscles: Muscles between the ribs that assist with breathing by expanding and contracting the rib cage.
Mechanism of Breathing
Breathing, or ventilation, involves two main processes: inhalation (inspiration) and exhalation (expiration).
Inhalation (Inspiration)
Diaphragm Contracts: When you breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, moving downward.
Intercostal Muscles Contract: The external intercostal muscles contract, pulling the rib cage upward and outward.
Chest Cavity Expands: The expansion of the chest cavity reduces the pressure inside the lungs compared to the outside atmosphere.
Air Flows In: Air rushes into the lungs through the nose or mouth, traveling down the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, finally reaching the alveoli where gas exchange occurs.
Exhalation (Expiration)
Diaphragm Relaxes: When you breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward to its dome shape.
Intercostal Muscles Relax: The external intercostal muscles relax, allowing the rib cage to move downward and inward.
Chest Cavity Contracts: The contraction of the chest cavity increases the pressure inside the lungs compared to the outside atmosphere.
Air Flows Out: Air is forced out of the lungs, traveling back up the bronchioles, bronchi, and trachea, and out through the nose or mouth.
This continuous process of inhalation and exhalation ensures that oxygen is delivered to the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is expelled from the body, maintaining the crucial balance necessary for life.

At 1:03:23 point you've said that in-between the visceral pleura and parietal pleura there's an empty space known as the pleural space or pleural cavity in which there's a lubricating fluid called the Pleural fluid....But in book page#320 it says pleural cavity is filled with a fluid called the "SEROUS FLUID" does it mean the same?? or there's a mistake? I'm completely lost.
