Very small container fpr that size of fish.
A black moor cannot survive in a tank of that size, not to be rude or anything, i'm just a strong fish lover wanting to give input. If you keep the fish in that little tank, which is too small for a betta, its "insides" will grow, even as its body stunts due to the small tank, and eventually its body will be too small for its "insides" resulting in death. Love the aquaponics, super helpful, just looking out for the little fish too though.
I've got those pole barn lights you used, as flood lights in my back yard and on my carport. Saves so much energy but bring so much daylight to those areas. Fantastic!
Nice concept.
To help filter the water of nitrogen, most aquarium enthusiasts will follow the general rule of thumb of 1-3 plants per fish. The same may be applied here.
The more waste produced by the fish you use, the more plants that will be needed.
To also help prevent root rot, consider a flood and drain system instead, by using a bell syphon instead of a stand pipe.
This does mean that a third tank will be needed to serve as the sump tank to stop the water level of the fish tank from fluctuating.
This ain't his first rodeo. Clean. Simple build. Nice
I love it. I originally subscribed to the channel (several years ago now) because of the aquaponics system in your old basement. Glad to see you circle back around to it.
Good to hear from you! Been awhile
SSLFamilyDad I don’t miss a video. I should comment more often. 😁
Great video!!! Going to start my aquaponic build tomorrow 😊
I wonder how important the grow light is? Being a countertop sized unit, couldn’t I just set up the tanks in a south facing window in the kitchen?
depends on what you want to grow, lettuce is fine as long as you get at least 4-5 five hours of direct light. If it something that need flowering, it's going to be harder
I love how you spray painted that tank lol! It gave it a nice matte black look. I can't wait to how this turns out and how fast the lettuce will grow!
Al's Homestead I’m sure he painted the tanks to keep algae growth down. Don’t you think?

Also helps to draw attention to what's inside the tank, and not behind it.
I miss the big aquaponics system you used to have with the tilapia
I'm mainly interested in aquaponics for the tilapia.. So what happened to his system?
The fish looks disproportionately small for the tank. Hopefully it grows quickly.
Its almost 2 months since this video. Can you do an update?
Love it l was just thinking l wanted to reset up my small fish tank 💕🐟🐠
That's awesome!
This is a cool little system. Lately, I have been hearing from some aquaponics sources that the mini systems don't work very well, so I'm hoping that you'll keep us advised on how well this system does over time.
I have an aquaponics of this scale and I have say (in my case) this statement is true. I have mine for 2 years now and I've used various media, water flow rates, number of fish and water supply methods. Up to this point ive found that hydroton(expanded clay pebbles) works best along with an auto syphon.
I am struggling to grow plants by directly placing seeds in the grow bed, i must germinate them first in a sealed wet paper towel or soil and THEN plant them into my growbed.
Ive tried various plants as well, Bassil dies almost instantly or it will grow very slowly, parsley seems to do ok and mint literally thrives in it.
My uncle, who lives nearby, has a large system with a 1000L fish tank and a growbed area of around 8-10m2 with normal gravel instead of hydroton as the grow media and his system flourishes in almost total shade.
So I do believe that bigger system works easier that micro systems and also, all the tips and instructions on large scale aquaponics forums does not seem to completely work with micro system.
My plan is start a bigger system with a growbed area of atleast 1m2....
Saartjie_69 for how much fish you have, what's your feed rate and the ratio of the feed rate to growing area? IIRC, it's 100g of feed per square meter of growing area. You might not be feeding the right amount to produce the correct amount of ammonia to be processed by the amount of growbed you have in such a small system. Have you tested your ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels?
cool concept, i wamt to build something similar.
pls consider the fish size/amount to tank size ratio.
the light was also probably too strong for the lettuce, but excited to see a good start!
Do you have to change the pebbles ever?
Very Nice For Kitchen ...
That's pretty cool . . . except for the fish does not seem happy, it's too small for that big lonely fish, it seems. Wouldn't a couple neons works the same and fit that space better? He keeps trying to swim fast and hits the wall, there's nowhere to hide, like under a rock or something. It doesn't seem like a great life for him. I don't know. Is that variety a loner in nature? Do they like to sit out in the open and not move much?
I just threw in one of the fish from our other tank. I think we will be getting a couple little fish for this setup
How many pounds/kilograms of clay balls did u use?
A very nice presentation . Had the fish in the little tank been some other colour than black . It would be an out clasd presentation. Any how . I liked your presentation so much .
hi, can you give me specification of fish tank and grow bed for 10 gallon, if I did use the 10 fingerling channel cat fish and 10 spinach plant .. please guide thank you
I always saw aquaponics as to expensive for what you got in return compared to a grow light and some dirt in a container. That said it looks like you have a clever little system with the fish tank.
Depends on the size of the system, and where you live.
Right now in Australia we are going through yet another drought. The closed loop system I use, allows me to still grow my crops without having to rely on rain water, or be forced to abide by the current water restrictions.
In areas where soil quality is poor, or growing seasons are limited, aquaponics is a good alternative.
@@mathewpoole3589 you make some good points for having a system. Where I live water has never been a big issue but out west I can see were it is an issue and might help some people grow their veggies.
@@chevy6299
A suitably sized system could recoup its initial outlay in as little as 2-4 years. This isn't always the case for smaller systems though.
There are some fairly decent small scale systems available, that while being incapable of producing relative yields, can cost as much or even less than what it would cost to setup an above ground planter in a titled courtyard.
But you are right. If the aim is to grow only a few heads of lettuce a year, than aquaponics will cost far more than its worth.
The finished product at the beginning look so simple.
I pretend I didn't see all the fire bending, drilling, making pcv pipes connected etc.
What kind of fish do you use?
The title alone gets a like: Gardening with your Fish
I didn’t see the estimates in the description, but I’m sure it wouldnt be hard to just make it.
Does that planter ever fully drain?
Cool build. Would be nice if the fish had at least 10 gallons of space. It will be really hard maintaining proper water parameters in such a small volume of water even with the expanded clay as a biofilter.
He’s got a 1:1 ratio of media to water volume, and with how porous the clay and rock is, it’s plenty of surface area. Depending on feeding/water changes/source water quality, he could probably support two mollies or similar sized fish.
@@TheRealConMan98 Sure the filtration will work but it is still a small volume of water compared to the fish. Fish keepers would say even a betta would need at minimum 5 gallons of space. That poor fish doesn't get 2 gallons of space.
@@cryptocorner2253 As an actual professional aquarist and water quality lab manager, that’s not true. Fish can thrive in smaller volumes with proper enrichment, life support systems, and maintenance. Is the average person getting a betta at petco going to provide those? Probably not, but if you know what you’re doing, you can maintain a ratio of 1 inch of body length per gallon of water, especially in an aquaponics system. Environmental quality is way more important than space when it comes to quality of life.
I would love a written tutorial to go with this, if at all possible
the best results that i've ever had was by following the Keiths Ponics Site (just google it) without a doubt the most useful info that I've followed
This is perfect for a small science classroom. Is there an instruction printable anywhere that I could purchase?
A blackmoor goldfish should not be in that 1 gallon container.
im curious about how that bell syphon works, it seems very simple.. im impressed
I tried making something like yours but when I put the Clay Pebbles in they would float and overflow ,how do you stop that ?
Soak them for a few days with something on top to weight them down
Thank You
Good unit to do some concept testing, but too small for reasonable results. Don't expect your fish to survive or be healthy in this small of a setup. That fish should be in at least a 10 Gallon tank to have enough space. you can bump up your aquaponics size.
Depends on the species and what decor/scaping you are using.
Personally I wouldn't recommend anything below 5 gallons for the fish tank for a system this size, with and addition 10 gallons in total for a sump tank, plus grow bed.
@@mathewpoole3589 looks like a fancy gold fish here, gold fish in general need atleast 10 gallon holding tank + their aquaponics system.
@@BillTheTractorMan
Can't say I know much about goldies. Bettas are more my thing.
The shape and footprint of the tank matters more than the capacity size.
A tall cylinder 10 gallon tank is just as bad as using a tank smaller than 2.5.
While a shallow 5 gallon that holds only 6-8 inches of water is a far more suitable sized tank due to its width and depth, not so much its height.
So with that said, if he is using a gold fish, depending on its size/age he will need to get a larger tank a some point. Otherwise, he'll be better using the same sized system with tetras or maybe even shrimp or something.
Very good.. 👍
Please return the fish or get it a bigger tank. No fish can live in that small of a container.
I second that!
For real that fish belongs in a 30 gallon, fuck this guy amirite
Pro tip : watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
but in the larger tank the fish could not poo enough to get the level of nutriant the plants need
Maybe I'm just blind but did you put the measurements for the PVC parts somewhere for this build? I can't seem to find them, thanks for all you do and for the inspiration that you give to many others, including myself!
height of the pvc pipe within the clay media should be 2 inches below the top. so:
height of pipe = total height - 2 inches.
why 2 inch?
1 inch for splash guard (dont want a wet floor!)
1 inch for dry media/clay u will dump on top to keep the wet media from getting algae or mouldy or fungus or whatever.
hope this helps!
Is there any way to get the instructions with items used for making these? I'd like to have some of my 5th grade classes make them (mostly) on their own this year.
The items are listed in the description. You would have to put one together and write instructions down from the video. I never wrote out a step by step on this project unfortunately
I would highly recommend not teaching animal cruelty to your classes. Might as well look into hydroponics if you aren't going to give the upmost care to the fish as well. They fish die, the system fails. Goldfish require quite a bit of space and can live for 15+ years if properly cared for. Killing them off slowly like this... It's unnecessary.
@ce collie chosing not to properly research the proper care for a living creature that depends on you... is that person's obvious lack of care for said living creature. It's not melodramatic to be factual.
@@lookgoodfeelgoodmagick4173 The video author said he put a fish from his other (probably larger) tank in this tank as example of how it works. This fish was not a permanent resident of this tank.
I saw this as more of a proof of concept than an actual plan on how to make a mini aquaponics system. If a person does the research on what species can happily live in a small tank and how to care for that creature, there isn't anything wrong with this method. Obviously one shouldn't try to keep a goldfish in such a tank, but -pond- bladder snails or ghost shrimp would likely thrive.
Nice system! Can't wait to see how it does. Shalom and Blessings from NE Missouri!
Does the water stay clean all the time? Do you ever have to clean it out?
The grow bed filters the water and "cleans" it for the fish. I would say every 4-6 months I will clean out the grow bed
great DIY build. poor fish is way too big for that tank though :P
Correct
Very cool. How’s it growing? Any updates?
The fish probably died from stress of living in this shoebox
Cool
Waste of money
Waste of time
Fish misery
Or death
Not sure about your thinking on this video
But thanks for your good intent
that's the sacrificial cycle fish i guess.
Why didn't you bell siphon the plant tank?
I wanted to add a bell siphon but you need a sump tank in order to do that otherwise the fish tank would drain to half full while the grow bed was filling and then raise to full when it drained. Not ideal for this size system.
@@SSLFamilyDad
I just left a comment of my own advising the same thing.
My only concern would be root rot if there are any stagnant pockets of water.
Your design isn't too far removed from the concept I use for my terrariums.
Be careful heating drill bits and knives. If you get them too hot you’ll destroy the hardness.
This looks great to do with kiddos!
Measurements?
That type of fish requires 40 gallons for one fish. It's a one gallon tank. Good concept but dayum that fish is gonna die n this is gonna fail.
The aquaponics master is back!...... Do you have a video on what kind of lights and why for aquaponic grow beds?
Algae will be a big problem with this design. Especially in your grow bed by the window and at the top level of the hydroton. You should think about painting the entire grow bed black and then having 1" of dry hydroton before the water level goes back down into the tank. Even more if the grow bed does not wick in oxygen by draining of nutrient solution completely.
What does painting black do?
Becky Pelishek light in the grow bed combined with water will grow algae. It’s not good for the plants and can also kill the fish and mess with your water. Pairing it black will keep the light from entering the area submerged in water.
Neat build. Hope you didn't ruin the temper on your pocket knife blade.
he did
... why did you spray paint it ? also fish is too big for the tiny tank sorry dude
he doesnt want algae. the big fish was only for demonstration purpose. he will put tiny fish in there later.
LOL With all that light, are you visible from space?
Any updates on the system now?
Whats the point of priming pvc pipe if you dont glue them?
They were all glued as well
SSLFamilyDad - In the video, you assembled it with purple primer only.
@@kekistanipatriot1644 He used clear glue! Watch the video CLOSELY!
Good system but the tank is way too small for the fish
You should have made the center drain pipe a little bit shorter and covered it, creating a bell syphon which would have FULLY drained your grow bed all the way down to the bottom which would let more oxygen down to the roots and ensure that your roots aren't just sitting in the water.
Fish looks miserable in that tank
There are many factors in learning home aquaponics. One plan I discovered that successfully combines these is the Keiths Ponics Site (check it out on google) without a doubt the no.1 info that I have ever heard of. look at this awesome website.
WHY HE SPRAY PAINT IT ?? DO WE HAVE TO ??
Goldfish, even just one, need WAY more space. They should be in at least 10 gallons. That fish can barely turn around in there. You can find more nano fish and smaller fish. Why torture a gold fish?
I was very disappointed you were not explaining what you were doing each step, for those of us who have NO idea how to do that kind of thing.. I mean yeah you can watch it, but still doesn't explain how to put stuff together, like those pipes, etc..
blind people can't build it anyway, whats the point explaining
that container is way too small for the fish hope he's not in there forever thts fucked up lmao
no he was cooked soon after filming this.
Goldfish need a bigger tank
Ohio State BUCKEYES!!!
I hope the petubers don't find this video. They'll give you a really hard time for keeping a goldfish in such a small volume of water.
Too late! 😂😂😂
You mean people who have basic decency to not torture animals to death? I'm not insulted.
@ce collie No. I meant what I said.
@ce collie by not researching their pets needs before getting it, they are intending to neglect it in one way or another.
the best success that I have had was by following the Keiths Ponics Site (just google it) without a doubt the best info that I've followed.
Ok but isn’t this fish abuse?
sushi is both: fish and stomach abuse
@@gringo77345 Why are you responding to a 1 yr old comment, also sorry if you didn't see my pfp, but my user is named after my pet fish that is in my pfp. ://
Holy fuck please do some research before you put a fish like that in such a tiny tank. Complete negligence
hey ,if anyone else wants to uncover aquaponic gardening system try Tarbetti Amazing Aquaponics Tutor (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my co-worker got cool success with it.
Рыбку жалко
A goldfish is an awful choice of fish for such a small tank
great choise of music. nope
Gotta be honest here... eating from a tank you’re putting fish food into is disgusting. It isn’t a closed system, you literally JUST said you’re *inputting food*. This looks cool, but is non-functional for the purposes of aquaponics, especially since the whole point is that the fish is doing the work, not you feeding it like you would some random aquarium. And if you think that fish food isn’t made with any chemicals you’re in for a rude awakening.
relax it's just a youtube video. its not the reality.
Can I used this to grow Illegal Marijuana?
Sounds like a fun project pal .👍
