Have to agree 100% with Ben's attitude towards the bacon gadget!! I thought it was just me who got annoyed by single purpose gadgets that don't even do the job properly - glad I am not alone!
Agreed. A unitasker that does the job perfectly and with minimal fuss, I'll use (like a toaster) but if it doesn't get a perfect result, I won't buy it
what ive heard from someone who studied food science, the reason those savers dont do anything is because the ethylene is what triggers the decomposition/ripening process... once it has started it doesnt really matter anymore (at least with bananas) and bananas that you buy have already had that process started, so they arent green anymore (they are prevented from maturing before being transported, so they dont go off and then triggered on the last mile so they ripen by the time they are sold) not sure about other fruit - but for bananas, thats precisely why that kind of thing does absolutely nothing
Other fruits (plus bananas) you can put them in a paper bag and trap the gas, causing them to ripen faster. So if you're trying to make a peach cobbler by a certain date and your fruit isn't quite ready you can bag them up the day or two before and get more usable ones. With bananas if you want to slow the process down, separate them from the cluster so they're not egging on each other's ripening.
@@Quest723The still does not matter for bananas - the ripening has already started and it happens inside the peel... whatever you do outside has negligible to no influence beyond potentially changing how fast the peel browns...which doesnt really matter for the banana itself afaik the best thing you can do to keep fruit fresh for longer is to just store them in a fridge (well not bananas - those funnily enough are better to store at room temp)

I agree with Chef 100% with all those useless, unnecessary, time consuming messy gadgets. A cook wants easy quick and useful gadgets that work each and everytime it's used and easy clean up is a must.

I'm so pleased that over the years Ben has become more honest with his reviews of things. Its great to show the negatives of all these things as it stops people buying them - and therefore stops all the waste! Nobody needs any of these things collecting dust in the cupboard.
I think its worth pointing out that the "furry coat" has nothing to do with the "fruit ripening", so if you have to wait for mould to show up before a shelf life difference is noticed I feel this may not be quite so good >.
exactly, the ethylene absorption doesn't replace proper storage. trapping all those items in a moist environment doesn't have anything to do with the impact of the gas. A little disappointed that Ben suggested wrapping a fruit bowl in plastic instead of giving info on how to properly store it.
For the heat sealer one, I got a relatively cheap Impulse sealer with the blue base and swing arm. Not much more expensive, seals in ~5 seconds with auto-off (adjustable for plastic thickness) and can do a 30cm sealing length in one go. Only downside is you have to find a spot to leave it in the kitchen, but really quick to use.
I love when you guys do gadget reviews, of all of those today I think the bag re-sealer would interest me and be useful. I'm going to see if I can find it.
@6:52 i work at a company that makes the bags for Crisps, and other snacks, the way the bag is structured is usually a layer of polyethene/polypropylene film (print layer) layer of molten Poly beads, a metal film layer, another layer of molten poly, then another clear film to seal it. the clear film is what usually is melted when sealing bags of this nature, not the metal. there are also bags for like candy bars that use a glue to seal, not heat (cold seal), thats why when you sealed the candy bars, the plastic melted to the sealer (it was not meant to be sealed with heat.
This is like a back alley version of Antiques Roadshow, 😂 I mean this in the nicest possible way, I'm here guessing the prices and everything! Love it!
I was so interested to see what appliance you were going to use to deep fry the bread. Love accepting that fry bread doesn’t need to be fried. I love this mini recipe for a fast & simple flatbread. I need to watch it again. It’s also fun to peek into your decision process about what to compliment your spread of the day.
I use my vacuum sealer on seal-only mode all the time on chip bags and other plastic bags. It's a great trick if you already have a vacuum sealer, but I'm not sure how good a stand-alone unit like that is. The ethylene absorber is interesting, because they work commercially. It's also the reason behind techniques like putting something in a paper bag to ripen it faster - that concentrates the ethylene. I suspect they don't work on all fruit, or it was just left out too long and bacteria started to break it down.
There's this wonderful little manual contraption made specifically for grinding a different sort of herb that actually works if you want to grind some of those spices. Just toss them in, put on the lid, and twist.
You can buy an inexpensive ceramic-burr coffee grinder for less than the cost of one of those spice grinding pods. They work just as well for spices as any pepper grinder does.
I bet the sealed clingfilm bowls trapped too much moisture for the ethylene gas removal to make much difference. When I want to preserve stuff in the crisper, it’s all about loose wrapping with paper towels to absorb moisture. I’d be interested in seeing how the stickers work in those conditions.
My rechargeable salt and pepper mills also have lights, which I first thought was gimmicky, but have grown to really appreciate. Especially when grinding into a deep pot or the pressure cooker pot, which is not under direct light.
Never in the history of this channel have I seen someone make a comment that leaves Jamie absolutely speechless. Jamie is NEVER speechless! Bravo Kush! "You shopped, I cooked, if it comes out bad it's your fault!" Jamie, you do not stand a chance against Kush's wit!

Probably a very very long shot, but the thought of Alton being angry at kitchen gadgets with Ben gives me life XD I think it'd be neat to get Alton's honest thoughts on the sidekick app as well!
Hey Ben, secret Bay leaf tip - chop fresh bay leaves into rock salt. Store for a few months then use either whole on charcoal BBQ meat or grind onto dishes requiring finer salt. Prove the doubters wrong. Make Portuguese Bay beef skewers. (Espetada)
Barry looked like he was trying hard to not puke from all the rotten fruity smells 😂 And Ben's annoyance with the bacon toaster, oh my gawd! And Barry and Jamie's reactions 😂😂 This whole video is hilarious!
I think wrapping the fruit was the wrong move. The Saver may absorb gas, but I think it's meant to be kept a bit farther away and not left in direct contact with the fruit it's supposed to be saving. You're still isolating all the gas right there in the bowl instead of drawing it away. It's like you're trying to remove the water from a tub by just dropping a towel in it and see what happens.
@@midgetfriendodog the issue is specifically with a fridge drawer, where it's not an airtight container but there isn't much movement of air. Also, I think refrigeration would help, because the time difference between ripening, over ripening, rotting and molding is extended with refrigeration.
@@midgetfriendodog Exactly. Which is why you separate bananas from the bundle if you don't want them ripening past where they are. Pretty much just need airflow. I bet the stickers work better if you throw them in the fridge crisper drawer.
I don't understand why they didn't put the saver on the bottom of the fruit bowl. Seems to me that the saver draws the gas to it but being right at the top just concentrated it in one spot.
Was the product even meant to be able to prevent rot? Everything organic rots eventually, the gadget was only meant to slow down over-ripening, not prevent rot in a humid environment.
Grind whole spices each time. That's what I learnt when I started cooking. The more gadgets you have does not mean the food will be better. Many gadgets aren't necessary. For example, our grandmothers used grinding stones. Refine the process, instead of running after a gadget. Simplicity wins every single time.
I love having frozen blueberries because they last long. Most of the time I love to pop in my mouth, put on yogurt, or make a compote for pancakes. Avocados I put in a paper bag and when it is ripened put it in the fridge. Bananas put in the freezer when it somewhat gets too ripe. Celery and carrots I cut them out up. Then fill them up in a bottle of water. I love to learn how to preserve and keep fruit and vegetables longer.
I had a "Bacon Express," and loved it. I loved the bacon that came out of it. I had a thick bacon that came out great when cooked. It definitely was fiddlin' to clean, and I think that there were more than 3 pieces, but I still liked the bacon.
Husband and I are chefs. One of the things we do with our interns because we work at different restaurants is to go ask the other person for a lentil peeler or some other nonexistent one hit wonder
Classic. We did this when I worked in theatre. We'd ask them "could you go find us a filter 130?" (which is a transparent colourless filter, useless to have separate, it's only used in lighting eguipment that has a rotating reel of filters that can be remotely switched. In a static light fixture, you'd just have it without a filter.) So if they returned having not found it, we'd say "ah, no matter, we'll just go open white then.".
For grinding whole spice I have a small cast iron hand mill. It has nice heft, mills the spices easily. Cleanup is a bit of job preferably using a brush.
I've never used the food discs but I do use the food saver bags from Lakeland and they work really well. Stick your broccoli in there and it'll stay ok for weeks. Much less of an effect with already ripe fruit but you'll get a little. Root veg and green stuff they work well, fruit less so I find. Also reusable for maybe up to 3 months so good value and available in 3 sizes.
I think the ethylene thing could work really well but you should know that some fruit is a heavy ethylene producer whereas other fruit is very ethylene sensitive, so that should be taken into consideration when selecting the fruit and I also wouldn't keep it covered with cling film since that is just a recipe for mould growth. I generally keep the ethylene sensitive produce away from the rest which works just fine, except with berries which just don't survive long unfortunately. would be interesting to see you try this thing out in the fridge as well.
For those interested in the first item, aka the ethelyne disk. These in fact do, technically work. That is the science behind them is solid. The problem with them is scale. On the home scale, the fruit do not appreciably produce enough ethelyne gas to notably quicken ripening, so you would not see a benefit for its purchase. For shipping fruit in the giant containers we use, there can be enough Gas, especially if it gets trapped in the pile, to do so, so using this tech, or other means of removing the Gas so it's under the volume required to trigger the ripening response, is a notable life extender(whether commercially viable is another question). There MAY be a fruit that produces an excess amount of ethelyne where they MAY work in a big enough bin, but I have yet to find one which would do so.
It’s always a nice day in the SortedFood Neighbourhood when there’s a gadget review. P.S. I can’t wait for Ben’s reactions. He needs a break from hosting duties.
You can get a battery version if the bag sealer, about a quarter of the size, with one side to seal (and only takes about four seconds to warm up), and the other size has a bag opener, so you can slice just below where you sealed, to open again, then resell.

I love when you guys do gadget reviews, of all of those today I think the bag re-sealer would interest me and be useful. I'm going to see if I can find it.
I have a battery-powered bag sealer. It is quite handy.
God bless you guys. You all gavee the inspiration for the special lunch for my mom today! You changed my life!❤❤😊😊🎉🎉
That’s amazing to hear. Thank you! Enjoy your special lunch with your mum 😁
@@SortedFood Will do guys! Wish You all the Best!
Love it!
The dramatic hand squeeze sold me on Ben's opinion of the fruit saver.
Ebbers crushing that fruit in his hands is the coolest I've ever seen him.
💪
@@SortedFood 💪
He was channeling James
If this is the coolest you've seen ben, you haven't seen him with a coconut machine!! 😎
This is PEAK Ebbers. 😂 I love seeing him be angry at dumb appliances.
It’s brilliant to witness huh? 😂
You can buy an inexpensive ceramic-burr coffee grinder for less than the cost of one of those spice grinding pods. They work just as well for spices as any pepper grinder does.
Ben’s frustration level was at an all-time high! 😂
It is usually a polite and always open-to-new-ideas Ben in previous reviews, but I am kinda liking the sassy Ben in this one. ❤
I'd just like to thank you all for so consistently uploading such quality content. 😊
Love the videos always a great Sunday pick me up! ❤
Thanks for watching 😁
Thank you so much for this video! I love it when some things are good and some things are bad, it makes the video more authentic!
Ben pulls out giant bag of m&ms and says noone could finish all of these.
Me: Challenge accepted.
....yes I can! And pay for it painfully...
I was confused by that, because in the US that size/shape of m&m bag has a zip closure to reseal. (And, obviously, could still finish the bag...)
Lol America has entered the chat (with no shame in our game)
@@myladycasagrande863I've never even seen that size bag in the UK - I think they went to somewhere like Costco for them!
@@hannahk1306 party size bags are pretty easy to find here. Not exactly surprised that it's different there. Who really needs that many m&ms?
My rechargeable salt and pepper mills also have lights, which I first thought was gimmicky, but have grown to really appreciate. Especially when grinding into a deep pot or the pressure cooker pot, which is not under direct light.
Ben was on one in this episode😂 love it
Never in the history of this channel have I seen someone make a comment that leaves Jamie absolutely speechless. Jamie is NEVER speechless! Bravo Kush! "You shopped, I cooked, if it comes out bad it's your fault!"
Jamie, you do not stand a chance against Kush's wit!
I think it'd be hilarious if y'all could get Alton Brown to come on the show and participate in a game and/or review some gadgets with Ben. Probably a very very long shot, but the thought of Alton being angry at kitchen gadgets with Ben gives me life XD I think it'd be neat to get Alton's honest thoughts on the sidekick app as well!
Especially Alton's extreme distaste for uni-taskers.
Hey Ben, secret Bay leaf tip - chop fresh bay leaves into rock salt. Store for a few months then use either whole on charcoal BBQ meat or grind onto dishes requiring finer salt. Prove the doubters wrong. Make Portuguese Bay beef skewers. (Espetada)
Barry looked like he was trying hard to not puke from all the rotten fruity smells 😂
And Ben's annoyance with the bacon toaster, oh my gawd! And Barry and Jamie's reactions 😂😂
This whole video is hilarious!
That's exactly what I need today! Thank you!
Yeah but if your not wrapping it is the etheline gas not escaping anyway?
Kitchen gadgets is always entertaining! Love the honesty 😂
These are always fun vids 😂
Glad you love them!
I love product reviews. These videos are some of my favorite!
ben- ' you remove a chocolate ' *agressilvly shakes away a chocolate*😂😂 🍫
and then seal it to keep the "individually wrapped" chocolate "fresh" :)
Love Ebbers for his review of the bacon thingy...nailed it!^^
Awesome video once again, Hoping we get a cook off or something like that where the cooks are forced to use multiple gadgets like this ^^
I had a "Bacon Express," and loved it. I loved the bacon that came out of it. I had a thick bacon that came out great when cooked. It definitely was fiddlin' to clean, and I think that there were more than 3 pieces, but I still liked the bacon.
The more this episode went on the more I realised I'm just like Jamie and Barry.
Ebbers pead all over the place 🤣🤣🤣
Great to see honest reviews rather than just puffing up bad products. Keep it up, great vid!
OMG! Hilarious to see Ben's reactions and he clearly wasn't anticipating the impact of the avoBomb!
Of the gadgets tested, I liked the APPEARANCE of the bacon cooker. It looked like a really cool toaster...
Bold of Ben to assume that I couldn't absolutely destroy that bag of M&M's.
Doing this is pretty common in every field where there are apprentices or interns, although every field has it's own thing they ask for.
I think Ben needed a hug after this episode
After he washed the Avocado off his hands
For grinding whole spice I have a small cast iron hand mill. It has nice heft, mills the spices easily. Cleanup is a bit of job preferably using a brush.
Ben should use the leftover fruit to make a blueberry banana bread with a avocado frosting 😋
Yes banana for banana bread
I love the Eggger's Rage at that bacon thing. The screaming was mutual as he was ranting.
Still miss the benuendo and out take at the end
Really going to try the cling film on the bowl for the fruit. Thank you.
I love bay leaves, and they do add something. Seems a shame that people with spice badges can't actually recognize that XD
I'd use those resealer things for exactly what Ben liked them for-- volatiles like coffee (or in my case, whole tea).
I just can’t get over the fact that someone thought of the bacon express and that it wasn’t Jamie! 😂
I loved the bacon review!😂 He was absolutely right!
Angry Ben is the best.
Haha 😂
Misread the title as *CRAZY CHEF Reviews Kitchen Gadgets!* ... might be a fun vid spinoff.
😂
loooove a sarcastic, testy Ben! always fun!
It’s always a nice day in the SortedFood Neighbourhood when there’s a gadget review.
P.S. I can’t wait for Ben’s reactions. He needs a break from hosting duties.
I love this series! Ebbers reviews are informative and hilarious.
You can get a battery version if the bag sealer, about a quarter of the size, with one side to seal (and only takes about four seconds to warm up), and the other size has a bag opener, so you can slice just below where you sealed, to open again, then resell.
I have a Finamill and absolutely love it. Didn't use correctly and yes they are airtight. Use mine multiple times a day.
