I think the reason some people don't like the game's appearance is the contrast between terrain and the two factions. In Starcraft2, there is a lot of the same materials, colors and textures in the terrain that match the units and building, as well as plain old nature. There is also more organic patterns in the map layouts. This helps harmonize the game's look. If Stormgate was to add that to their maps, I think some people would like the look of it a lot more.
Everything looks so clean and polished, it's not 'realistic'. From the enviroment to units, everything looks like came out of different 3d printers and then you've put them together. Literally, look at the first frame, it looks like the units are walking in plastic grass. Luminite seems it's from a different game and therium doesn't look like it's part of the enviroment. Actually both resources look like items on top of other items, like you put your phone on the table and you can clearly tell these are two seperate items. You don't have the feeling that you're mining resources from the earth, but from an item that was placed there. The building itself has some nice details in the edges where it blends with grass, but the rest of it is so glossy and polished. Compare that to a S2 Command Center which looks slighlty dirty/used/scratched.
@@StormGate We need a production tab ASAP :) for me the game is ugly, but if the gameplay/ tactic/pathing/ micro is good , letz try. For now its far from StarCraft. Remember me more of WC 3 .
Love seeing the progress Frost Giant is making on this game! I don't really understand what certain people don't like about the look of the game. I know some of these are placeholders and work is in progress, but everything looks fine to me. No part of it looks bad to me!
I think at lot of it is personal preference. But I don't mind the graphics either, and as you already said, I expect progress as development continues as well!
I'd say the biggest gripe with the graphics for me right now is the maps themselves. The still mostly rudimentary terrain and tilesets seem to really clash with the buildings/units right now. Balance wise I think the doombringer (infernal dropship) needs looking at, it just seems so ridicuously fast. A proposed solution is perhaps lowering it's move speed when it's filled up is a solution here? (or lock the movement speed behind an upgrade). Perhaps also look into how much units it can transport at once. It is allready a mobile shroud area which is pretty strong in itself.
I'd take gameplay, responsiveness and fluidity over graphics everyday of the week. How many AAA titles have we had that have wonderful graphics and play like tosh recently. So long as there's enough variation in each faction to develop counterplay and new strats then they're onto a winner.
its really nice to hear you again casting an RTS mate :) hm ... maybe homestorycup stormgate ... a man might dream ... i always had the best talks with people at hsc :)
Dogs can be very strong vs. Infernal. But of course Infernals also learn how to adapt to them. Oftentimes that results in them having to give up the map in the early-game.
no matter what graphics might be changed, the style is here to stay so it doesnt really matter if u like it or not, if u wanna play the game you have to accept that this is the style its very simple xD i think its good because this comic style ages well, as more realistic as you go as worse your game ages and as easier you see outdated graphics
Is this the developers channel, are they reading criticism here? Stormgate has the same art style as Warcraft 3, bulky, like overinflated baloons. Not my type, but I can live with it. But I would love if this game were more like Broodwar, with sieges on the map and blocking off areas. Right now I see too much melee vs melee, which I find a bit boring. But I love that these aren't insanely huge armies like in SC2, that then evaporate in a second.
haha I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna ruin a 2nd channel with Spoiler protection xD As much as I'd like to include it, it just ruins the algorithm way too much
Graphically this looks closer to a mix of Wc3 and Sc2 than Sc2 looks close to Sc1. Personally I don't hat it, but considering that there has more time passed between Stormgate and Sc2 than between Sc1 and Sc2 (releasewise) and Sc1 and Sc2 are supposed to looke similar, while Sg is not, this is not good at all, it's sad. If I didn't know anything about Sg and you'd show me footage telling me that it was released one year before Sc2 I'd be "Wow, looks good. How come I never heard of it?", but I wouldn't be doubting the year of release.
Complaining about graphics when the game has more than a year left in development is just silly. The gameplay is what really matters anyway. Worry about the "paint" after.
I mean, both matter. And this test was advertised as an open beta which is usually close to release not 1+ year off. Hence the confusion, probably. I still think the game looks fine for where it is, just explaining where the complaints are coming from.
@@HighLanderPonyYT Obviously the graphics will matter at the time of release, but this isn't the time of release. So graphics objectively do not matter right now. Your second point is also objectively false. Go look at SC2 when it was still in beta. It's almost a completely different game. Frost Giant has also already said that there is more than a year left in development for StormGate. So common sense would suggest that the current build is not anywhere near final. The thought process of "beta basically = finished" is because of modern games that release in a beta state, which Frost Giant has expressed that they do not intend to do.
As for graphics - it's a bit like LoL vs Dota for me. I just don't like the candy-clean esthetic, and it especially clashes with RTS for me. There are notable exceptions ie Army Men using toy soldiers and somehow coming out of it gritty. Or HotS where it's more tongue in cheek - but those last two embraced the candy and made it it's bitch Heisenberg-style. But there's an easy visual aid - everything I find "meh" esthetically about StormGate - ZeroSpace gets that itch perfectly, despite having fairly similar graphics. But ZeroSpace has a bit more detail, and it all goes towards making it just less... sterile. And when it comes down to it, a good RTS should retain it's tone when dialed down in graphics settings, because people will often want to do that if it ends up giving any edge in performance or visibility. So if this is still negotiable, please take a look at that title. Well, when it comes to map and units. It's control menu looks like an unfortunate WinAmp skin from 1999.
Visually it just looks terrible, and the argument about how smooth it is to control doesn't make any sense, they aren't mutually exclusive. Look at any frame in your video, 18:50 as a reference, Therium looks sharp, terrain, buildings and units are all a muddy mess but the health bar on top are sharp. It looks like part of the game is running at different resolutions, and at all times. But the worst part is infernal design, the colour scheme is red, gold and greyish black. Look at 17:25, everything is in that colour scheme including the infernal terrain, it's a huge grey blob.
While I don't hate the graphics, sc2 is quite old by now but looks 10x better than this game currently does. The parts that stand out to me as lacking are sound design and especially the aesthetic of the maps. Beyond that it's hard to say, difficult to judge the buildings and units when they just look out of place on the map.
A lot of the sounds are still placeholders to my knowledge. I'm personally not too worried because they've heavily improved the game with every new build and fully acknowledge that there's still a lot of work to be done
That was weird to watch, i mean that this human race seems to no have time to properly set his unit etc. And got flooded everygame. It looked like there is some balancing problem.
There's several factors at play here. Of course the game isn't fully balanced yet, as mentioned in the video there's lots of things still missing. But you also have to keep in mind that one player had vastly more experience playing SG than the other
i dont like the graphics because it looks like an animated kids show, thinks are kinda chunky and look like playdoh. Also thematically it looks like multiple things mashed together. Robots that seem to be inspired by police with smiley faces vs beasts and cartoony monsters from hell? all taking place in a warcraft 3 map. Needs alot of work imo
@StormGate I totally agree. I watched his YT channel when HOTS was in its prime. Yours too actually :) Very happy to see some old faces in a new and fun game. Looking forward to the casts Khaldor!
Vanguard buildings seem so uninspired graphically. "It's early" is not an excuse for me, first impression matters. I already don't wait for release, so probably won't play or watch it regularly, or not at all.
Wondering why "it's early" is not a valid reason for you? The game is literally still in development. If you are expecting a fully polished product wouldn't it make more sense to wait for the actual release before you judge it?
You probably never developed a game did you? I have. You design assets at the end of the dev cycle, after you have finalised the game mechanics, because it doesn't make sense to waste work on high def game assets that won't make it into the final game. At this stage of the game it is all about game mechanics, and balance.
its really not as much an experience thing as vanguard is just severely underpowered right now. All of these games were complete walkovers, their skill gap is not THAT big.
One player played for months, the other played one day. I assure you this match would look very different in even a few weeks. I'd also recommend for you to watch my latest upload to see how strong Vanguard can be against top infernal players 😊
Huh? There's thousands of people already playing... Of course this is all still super early but it's not like these guys don't have a massive eSports background
Nice to hear Khaldor casting :') brings me back to the earlier days of sc2
