I am having issues where my file is saved onto my desktop, but I am unable to transfer my project onto a flash drive. It says "This item can't be copied because there isn't enough free space."
VidProMom So saving to high mode or custom saves as MP4, and prores as .mov? MP4 reduced the origInal file size by 2/3; whereas, prores increased it by 2-3x. I was rotating video from sideways to vertical normal viewing mode. Why can't I get basically the original file size reproduced when rotating, saving and exporting with iMovie? Thanks!
I have been using iMovie for quite a while, however, I am someone who likes to take a quick review before I do something I don't want to waste time or material (discs) on. This video gave me the information (specs.) that I was looking for. Glad I found this resource. Thank you VidProMom for your time and expertise.
I could hug you right now! I have spent two hours trying to figure out why my video was downloading as an .mov and not .mp4, then you happened, and you saved me lol. I seriously searched through imovie support, apple, and google...nothing! Thank you so much for your description of best vs. high!
Thanks darling. I am transitioning from PC to Mac and find myself looking for so much basic info. Your video helped me. Have a lovely rest of the week. ☀️🌸🌺🌷
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. I WAS HAVING SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH TROUBLE UPOADING MY FIRST VID UNTIL I SAW YOUR TUTORIAL. I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! = D
Just bloody WOW! Ive been searching YouPipe for exactly what you've just explained to me in simple effective detail. Thank you so much for this and I can now start examining your other videos. Thanks again x
I'm tired of using Windows Movie Maker and decided to give iMovie a try. It's been really difficult to learn and find where things are; this video really helped, thank you!
Meredith, Meredith, dearest Meredith. Thank you so much. GREAT stuff. As a new MacBook user, I am so ashamed of still being seemingly unable to ditch my windows default mentality so for me this is a struggle, and you just held my hand and gave me a leg-up. Consider me subscribed. It is really refreshing to see a video on UA-cam that just got straight down to business, which means you are now my best friend, whether you like it or not. Thank you and best wishes from an English guy in a french forest. 🏆🎯
OMG!!!! Thanks so much for this tutorial! I'm a NEW iMovie fan after struggling for the past 3 days trying to get a PowerPoint presentation to work. Exporting and keeping fingers and toes crossed that the Windows person on the other end will be able to view it and show it at an awards dinner tomorrow night.
U just solved the problem I've been facing for the past three years with the sentence you thought might not make anty difference to us ;))) thank you !
I just started using iMovie I had a Windows laptop before where I would edit on Premiere Pro but Mac computers would need a graphic ram for the application to work. So I figured why not give iMovie a try and you were totally helpful, thanks a bunch!!
GREAT JOB. Telling me to hit file was the best thing to do. I looked at a few others and couldnt understand a word they said. Especially the kid on the skateboard with the accent ! lol. Thank you
Meredith!! thank you. I went thru so many UA-cam "iMovie how to's" that were of no help, but yours are clear, concise, and to the point. thank you thank you thank you
well done Meredith , a great video and how well you transfer information , a real teacher , calm , clear and very concise too . Keep them coming , they will help anyone with issues such as these . Love the snow video too .
Thank you. You clearly explained the saving options. We are making a relative's wedding video and want highest possible quality, but part of the footage was filmed using an iPhone and the rest filmed using a high def camcorder. On a different web site, I learned if you have part iPhone (lower quality video) and part camcorder high def video combined into one movie, whatever you put first is the highest resolution option you are offered, so trick it by putting a high resolution photo first, then choose the high def option to save it to file, and then remove the photo and save it again. I haven't tried this yet, but it sounded good for something as important as a wedding where using extra memory is preferred.
This was very helpful! When I exporting the File, however, only one little video clip of my movie actually downloads! Same with trying to email it. No transitions, no music, no other video clips...and the whole thing was fewer than 2 minutes long so that shouldn't be the problem. Is there a place where I need to say Save this as a whole Movie from within iMovie? It still looks good inside the program but I cannot send it to the gift recipient that way. Thank you!
Great video and very easy to follow! I did all that and ended up with a 3.14 Gb MP4 file that fit nicely on a DVD+R disc. But it won’t play in any of my DVD players. Could it be the +R format of the DVD causing the problems?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm use to editing in windows movie maker and I have been struggling trying to figure out how to export my videos since switching to iMovie. I must've watched at least 6 videos that didn't help me much. This is was so simple and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I followed your directions and saved my movie to my desktop. It has the Quicktime logo in it. However, when I click on it to play, it says the file is not compatible with Quicktime. I want to share this with a wide audiance who may not all have a mac. help. Thanks
Meredith, I have been doing this work for my swimmer's clinics, editing etc. your instructions were great to refresh simple moves. My only last question is when I filed a move and I am done, may I just delete all the takes used and take them out of the editor field?
Hi Pedro, yes you could delete them if you’re 100% sure you don’t want to make any more edits! Or you could leave it and start a new project for your next video.
Thanks for the Quick video! My pc crashed... long story short having to edit on my husband's apple! The editor is a million x easier but uploading videos to his computer and then trying to figure out saving it was difficult because it is so different for me...I had to look up videos just to transfer files from my android.. was about to go cray lol. Trying to do this while my daughter is sleeping so you saved me so much time, thanks!
how can I export different little sections of a big video? i have the sections already divided (i want the full version for youtube but the smaller versions of the best moments for social media)
Great tutorial! Thank you. Once I click file and try to open it, it says it is in compatible with quicktime. The original video was downloaded from zoom.
Nice video, but I was curious about getting the video off an iPhone to a laptop, ditto the iPad. Maybe I can find that in another video, but it would be a nice addition to this one. Thx
I am a video teacher from the "old school" and found your video to be VERY helpful. I love how you "explain it to me like I'm a 4 tear old" (Denzel Washington) Thanks so much
thank you for your video....I am looking all over the internet about how to chose the cover picture for my I movie and I can't find anything....my macbook keep choosing the cover picture and I do not like it. Please let me know if you can help me. Thank you so much
Oh my so useful , I’m a complete novice to editing , well apart from iPhone , so for me this was the simplified explanation of iMovie thankyou so much x
Ikon like 3 years late on this video but I’m having problems exporting/uploading from iMovie using my iPhone. The error says movie too long YT Limit is 15 minutes my video is 19 minutes. Any idea how to maneuver this?
All the imported video on top....how do you set it to being synced together? I found that much easier to edit but mine changed and I am trying to change it back
This was fantastic! Thank you! I have a question for you... I'm using my iphone11 pro to record videos, I then use those video's to create a movie in iMovie version 10.1.14. However, when I upload the edited video on UA-cam the video is grainy/ pixelated. I'm completely new to all of this so any info would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks! Great tip on the High quality MP4 file vs. Best quality MOV file. I did not know that. Do you know what codecs are being used? This information is so hard to find. I'm on iMovie 10.1.7
great video! quick question... i just shot video on my cannon ti3... it's from 2013 but still works great. it shoots in 1920 x 720 or 1940 not 100% sure. once i upload in IMOVIE it looks perfect, even better hd quality than the latest iphone video. however, when i go to export, the 1080 option is blurred out... im not sure why i can only export in 720 since the camera shoots in 1920 quality... any ideas? I have seen a few options on youtube that say make sure to upload a 1080 clip on your timeline then just copy and paste your imovie project after, delete the original file and then you can export in 1080 p... but im still a bit confused as to why 720 is the only export option i see when i importing video from my Cannon. Thanks!
Thank you for the tutorial. I tried to follow your instructions but I may have skipped an important step. I imported a mpeg-4 file with 29.5 MB, extracted the audio and exported to a file but I was surprised that it generated a mpeg-4 with 134.4MB instead. What am I doing wrong?
Hi, my movie once saved is showing the error 1008 rendering and there are black screens lasting less than a second. How do I get rid of them, as the file wont save.
Perhaps you could share how to save an edit if you've split a larger video and just want to export a selected part. No matter what I do it exports the entire original clip. I've watched 3 of these things now. There is a step that is missing. Or point me in the right direction.
How i will save this project on my external HDD so that i will delete this project from my mac and whenever i want to work on the same project I can import that project from HDD and start editing again. Can I do the same?? if yes any idea how can i proceed??
This has been so helpful! I was in the middle of a project when the iMovie update was installed....and I was lost! I've battled with the editing, worked out what I needed to do but then what do I do? You've just solved it for me.and I'm so happy that I can now start another project at last.
Hi Meredith, thank you so much for your tutorial, I had spent hours searching for something I could actually understand, your video was so easy to follow and you did a brilliant job of that, so happy I came across your channel. Thank you :)
Export settings often trip people up!!
VidProMom i don’t have that export setting on the top left corner what version are you on?
VidProMom o it is tblet
VidProMom idk I'm dum

Great video so easy!! Thank you so much!!!!
This is definitely one of the most lucid and to-the-point videos I've seen on youtube. Bravo! and Thank you!

Thank you so much for a clear explanation and great examples . You're the best!

Thank you so much!!!!!! You are SO much better than the boys we watched!!!!
Haha - that's great to hear!! :D
This was the only video that actually helped thank u
I see the difference the snow color is much more white and everything looks more brighter in "high". Thanks for this

Hmm I’m not sure to be honest! I’ve never created a dvd before.
Helpful! thanks! My videos are about 20 minutes long and I shoot them in 1080. How can I compress them for shorter uploading times?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm use to editing in windows movie maker and I have been struggling trying to figure out how to export my videos since switching to iMovie. I must've watched at least 6 videos that didn't help me much. This is was so simple and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thank You Meredith for your awesome tutorial!

Thank you Meredith. I exported directly to FB accidently. How do I stop that export? It's been 2 hours and is still 'preparing'.
Meredith, I have been doing this work for my swimmer's clinics, editing etc. your instructions were great to refresh simple moves. My only last question is when I filed a move and I am done, may I just delete all the takes used and take them out of the editor field?

I think you'd have to probably copy and paste you timeline into a new project and re-edit. I'm not sure!
Thank you. Great video. Right to the point!
Great tutorial! Thank you. Once I click file and try to open it, it says it is in compatible with quicktime. The original video was downloaded from zoom.
I have a video taken with my cellphone, I want to transfer it to my laptop then I would like to edit it and upload it to UA-cam!! How do I do that ??
Airdrop is the easiest thing
Nice video, but I was curious about getting the video off an iPhone to a laptop, ditto the iPad. Maybe I can find that in another video, but it would be a nice addition to this one. Thx
Thank you! It doesn't ask me where I want to save it to. When I press next, nothing happens. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Thanks for the tips! Exporting a file first is so much easier and faster! & then I upload to UA-cam! :)
Really great info, but when my movie downloaded to the desktop, my computer won't play it. Any suggestions? It's as an MP4
Not sure on that 😐
I am a video teacher from the "old school" and found your video to be VERY helpful. I love how you "explain it to me like I'm a 4 tear old" (Denzel Washington) Thanks so much
LOL thank you Michael.
thank you for your video....I am looking all over the internet about how to chose the cover picture for my I movie and I can't find anything....my macbook keep choosing the cover picture and I do not like it. Please let me know if you can help me.
Thank you so much
Great stuff VidProMom. Thanks for your help. Btw, what mic do you use? you voice comes out spectacular :)
You're so good at voiceover! You sound so conversational and natural 💙
you cleared my confusion,,thanksss!!
Oh my so useful , I’m a complete novice to editing , well apart from iPhone , so for me this was the simplified explanation of iMovie thankyou so much x

Great video. iMovie is so non-intuitive - but you've really helped. Thank you.
Help please do you know how to save an unfinished Imovie video for editing on another computer or at another time.
I don’t know if that’s possible
You are awesome VidProMom!!!!
Very clear and helpful!
Fantastic update. I wish Apple had put the extensions it would be converting your file to next to the quality ratings.
Thanks I was wondering the difference was between high and best
All the imported video on top....how do you set it to being synced together? I found that much easier to edit but mine changed and I am trying to change it back

Thanks! Are they still that way a day later? Sometimes it takes awhile for youtube to fully parse all the different resolutions
Hey will it save all the edits I did like the transition I did for the video and extra sound
iMovie app on my iPhone is my life line right now. I love it!
I literally love you for this. Macs are so damn difficult compared to the Windows that I’m used to but this helped so much. Thank you.
I do the same steps as you, but it always fails to export. Once it gets to 100% it fails. Any ideas on what to do?
Do u get same features on ur iPhone ??
Thanks! Great tip on the High quality MP4 file vs. Best quality MOV file. I did not know that. Do you know what codecs are being used? This information is so hard to find. I'm on iMovie 10.1.7
What Mic are you using? Your voice is super clear. I need a new Mic, was just wondering. Thanks.
Rode VideoMic. Here's all the gear I use! vidpromom.com/gear
Thank You!
What if I want to upload multiple videos. I have multiple videos put into a movie so how do I up load all of them.
Thank you so much! Very helpful!
Do you have good setting to export to Instagram?
This was perfect! Just what I needed. 😊 Thanks
For UA-cam Videos should I us the Best ProRes or should I keep it at High?
Thanks for this great tutorial! It was very helpful!!
I need to export to share on a CD player or thumb drive in venue with no wifi. Best only for .mov?
great video! quick question... i just shot video on my cannon ti3... it's from 2013 but still works great. it shoots in 1920 x 720 or 1940 not 100% sure.

Hmmm. You stumped me on that one, I'm not sure!
Very clear! I really appreciate how simple and straightforward your instructions are. Thank you!
Thank you!! This helped me soooo much!!
just wanted to say this is super helpful video - and I am sharing it ALOT in my video community!
Thank you so much I haven't been on a Mac in ten years and I recently got one as a birthday gift and lets just say, you helped me out !
So once it’s on your desktop then how do you get it to UA-cam?
What version of iMovie are you on. I don't have that export setting in the top corner...
it could also just say "Share" and be in the left top corner. Or try going to your tool bar under "File"
Great video. Thanks for the help.
So there is no way to export 1080p video if I shoot my video on iPhone?
Thank you. New to imovie and you saved my project....bless you
Can you edit on UA-cam after exporting from iMovie?
This Video has helped me a lot for starting my youtube channel.
best imovie export setting gopro for youtube?
SO HELPFUL Thanks!
the other videos i checked out about the same topic never told me about the high-MP4 and Best-MOV format thing. thank you for that! so relieved
Hi, my movie once saved is showing the error 1008 rendering and there are black screens lasting less than a second. How do I get rid of them, as the file wont save.
Great advice and tips Miss VidProMOM :😁
Exactly what I needed in less than 6 minutes, thanks!
Great video, thanks for sharing.
The only good video on this! Thank you!
Very simple & big help thanks !

Hi Meredith, thank you so much for your tutorial, I had spent hours searching for something I could actually understand, your video was so easy to follow and you did a brilliant job of that, so happy I came across your channel. Thank you :)
Thank you Monika!
I had problems uploading to UA-cam from iMovie too and never understood why. Thank you for the clarification!
