Pete Best was a perfect drummer for The Beatles from 1960 to 1962 but he had a limited palette for the progression of songs from John and Paul. If they had kept Pete for live work and used a session drummer for studio work their history would've been shorter and less innovative. Going with Ringo as a musical and personal fit was a 200iq move.
Best sealed his fate when he failed to show up to gigs in Hamburg and Ringo sat in and gelled with the other three. Seems like a nice guy but didn’t have the same ambitions as the other three.
The song was What'd I Say by Ray Charles...Ringo sittin' in playing the exact drum part from the record where Pete and other bands would do the typical beat for bar bands. McCartney tells the story in an interview where Paul, George and John, in the Cavern Club at the looked at each other in amazement within a few bars of that song...."Holy Crap! This is different, this is professional, whoa..." kind of look. Amateur drummers, professional drummers...which would you choose for YOUR band? By Best, turns out you're not the Best. We won't make it big with you....
@@thomastimlin1724 there’s also the bootleg Hamburg tape which luckily had Ringo sitting in that night, you can really feel the energy they put into those shows

_The Beatles_ had hardly played together until Best came along. The Quarrymen did not have all three guitar Beatles. They could hardly play. They all learned for two years in Hamburg, forming their style and sound. Pete Best was an integral part of that moulding. Pete and his mother managed the band. When Best was fired (well he could not be fired being a partner) Ringo was 4th choice. *Bobby Graham* was a London sessions drummer who formed a made up studio band, the Bruvvers, to have a name on a Joe Brown record. Joe Brown went on tour asking them to go along. They dropped the studio work for a few weeks and went along. The Beatles opened for them on the tour. That is how they knew Bobby and admired his playing. They offered Bobby the job first, who naturally rejected it. He went on to record in many 60s hits as a sessions man playing with Big Jim Sullivan, Jimmy Page and Vic Flick (James Bond theme). U.S. Producer Shel Talmy (The Who, Kinks, Manfred Mann, etc) used Graham exclusively. *Ritchie Galvin* of Liverpool band The Galvinisors turned the job down as he disliked Lennon and knew Best, not wanting to be a part of it. *Tommy Hutch* of Liverpool band The Big Three never liked The Beatles music, or Lennon much, and also knew Best, so turned the job down. Ringo was 4th choice. They were after any half decent drummer for sure, with no one in mind. All this begs the question, why did they did get rid of Pete Best? He has never been told. He was a good drummer for sure, so it was not his drumming ability. When Ringo turned up at EMI Abbey Rd Martin again said he will get a studio drummer, which was the norm at the time.
Here's what I think. Paul, John, and George knew they 3 had a star-showbiz worthy chemistry, knew they could go all the way. But they didn't think Pete was up to it or would work out, he would be a problem and a "weak link" in the PR aspect. But they finally had a drummer willing to stick around so they didn't want to mess up their momentum by firing Pete and not being able to find and gel with a new drummer efficiently enough. So they wanted him gone but weren't sure what to do about it. But THEN when they met George Martin and it became obvious they were about to start high level business, Martin understood the situation and used Pete's mediocre drumming as a solid excuse to fire him, basically helped J, G, and P get him out the door. They pretty much used Pete 😂
Unfortunately Pete Best was unable to remain with the Beatles because of a very simple word: Destiny. It was not Pete's destiny and instead it was Ringo Starr's destiny. The day Ringo joined the Beatles was the day they became the Fab Four we all know and love today. Ringo fit in perfectly in every way, musically, personally, and creatively. He was a much better drummer then Pete, and his exceptionally unique drumming enhanced and enlarged their sound. Ringo was meant to be, and Pete Best was not. There was just something special that those four young men had together which cannot be explained. We will never see any band to compare with the Beatles ever again.
Go find the Parlophone/EMI recording of Pete Best falling off the bridge in "Love Me Do" and you will understand why George Martin kicked him out of the Abbey Road studio and called in Andy White. Quite simply, Pete could not keep time.
The Love Me Do recording at Abbey with Best was work in progress. Martin asked them to do something they were not familiar with. They were to do back to it.
Three separate producers said Pete Best was not good enough, in spite of Pete's mommy saying Pete was the world's best drummer and so good looking. Contrary to the video, Pete never stopped complaining about being fired, never once considering he could have practiced more and improved himself.
When Paul and Pete were arrested for the alleged arson, you forgot to mention they all left Germany for another reason. George was busted by the theater manager also for being underage in the country and working in the band.
He can SAY he was a better drummer since Best is dead now.... He was fired because of jealousy of Pete getting more attention from the girls than anybody else in the band combined... So they found a drummer that couldn't ever do that,,,, and if you think that kind of stuff hasn't and doesn't happen, you have no idea what you're talking about... Had Pete not been a good drummer, they wouldn't have kept him around for the first 2 years of being a group/to band.... it doesn't take 2 years to know if a member is good enough... and abruptly throw them out when things start opening up for the band... He was the drummer that got them through up to that point. There are very few accomplished drummers in the world that ringo is better than.....
He finally got his severance pay in 1995.

You can tell Pete wasn't the best of drummers, I believe that is why they got rid of him. Ringo was better and fitted in perfect for the rest.

Johnny Hutchinson was the first Beatles drummer. Colin Hanton drummed for the Quarrymen.

There isn't shred of truth to the idea that the three felt any loyalty to Pete. I'm sure they felt bad about it though.

He was fired for being really really really good looking
