  • Drimoleague lost some 42% of its people to disease, starvation and death during an Gorta Mór, Ireland's Great Famine of the 1840s.
As part of the Skibbereen Union, this area was one of the worst affected in all of Ireland during that crisis.
The mass grave at Drimoleague's old graveyard was dug as an emergency measure for the hundreds who were dying in the area during that terrible time.
This short video gives an overview of the Great Hunger in Drimoleague, alongside some of the horrific Famine stories relating to this graveyard. We hear witness accounts from Dr Dan Donovan, Rev. Tuckey and we hear how local children saved a man from being buried alive in this graveyard.
The mass Famine Grave is now respectfully marked with a memorial to those buried there, erected by the local community.

Lest we forget how others suffered and how blessed we are and let us always give to others
