Thank you for the input....much appreciated. ...I was leaning toward the surly troll with rohloff set up.....that won't leave to much extra from the $6k....but the budget is for tent, kitchen, panniers and my whole set up.....hope to be riding soon.....till then I'm enjoying the ride and crash course on touring through you... thanks for letting us ride along.......
Here is a man touring the US and instead of people coming to him to say hi, they call the police. It's a shame some people are so afraid of their own shadow.
CJ no one should be calling the police on a guy ridding a bicycle. I mean if a person is curious, then they can just say hello and that will spark up conversation.
I agree your choice in music is excellent.... also as I value your opinion and your experience I would appreciate your help... if your budget was about $6k what would be your top 5 choices if you where to buy or build a new touring bike???
must admit i'm far from a bike expert so not the best person to ask... I learn how to fix my bikes but as far as other brands/parts are concerned don't know much. But with $6k you have almost limitless options. Love my Thorn Nomad, has never done me wrong and the ongoing customer service is a big plus, if you're in the US would just go for a Surly with 26" rims and save some of that $$ to travel with. But also a big fan of the Rohloff hub if you're able to add that to a build. And if you're planning a world tour would look into some of the european expedition bikes like Santos or Kyoga?
hey, Ive thought of this a few times but never asked--never any problems with oil leaking out of the rohlof when you overturn your bike at night? Must not cuz you always seem to have the bike that way. No rattlesnake meetings/surprises?
No rattlers recently, but in the past in Alberta I've come across a few on the roads. As far as the rohloff... someone left a comment a while back about oil leaking. i used to leave the bike on its side but now flip it on its back to prevent that. I've never noticed any oil leaking, but I've done a handful of oil changes now and every time it seems drier than I expect it should be after extracting the cleaning fluid
sorry, didnt get back right away. Ya, I had heard some things and I know a guy from Montreal on a long trip with one, figured I'd ask you if there were any tips to mention to him. Cheers
Hey, Is it best to post random questions on your video comments or in the 'discussion' tab? had a question in there for a while, but while I've got your attention....for us 'armchair adventurers' with unlimited bandwidth and data can you make more mention of different areas you're passing through or run some text across the bottom of the screen? particularly some of the nice scenery areas. I'm only up to #98 so please irregard (darganism) this if you have done so. I've been able to follow along pretty well on Google Earth but sometimes get a bit lost and you 'pop up' some miles away from the last road sign I could make out! Not a biggie and thanks for being out there! Cheers Chris
Thanks man! yea no problem, I've really only been writing starting and ending towns in description for each specific vid. If I have the time and motivation and battery power left on my ipad could add some more text. Also I do everything on mobile so rarely have access to discussion tab sry! Only discovered it recently, I'm not good at youtube ahaha
Brilliant music choice on this episode!
Great taste in music! Beautiful big sky country... :)

he gets alot more people giving help and that are curious than police calls.

What do you do for money out on these trips also what about water when you get out in the middle of nowhere?
Strange you got an invite for lunch and calls for police all in the same afternoon. Cool vid though. Hope you're doing well, Derek.
hah yea, actually the reason i love doing this, get the whole spectrum of human interaction
My city's senior center has pool tables. I'm guessing that if you'd taken on some of these old guys, you'd be broke. ROFL!
hustlers i know, but I'd be broke if I took on anybody at pool really

Small town small minds....i feel sorry for any ethnic people in that town. I can't believe they called the police on you...wow.
ah, happens, gave me a laugh, really not much of a bother. But good thing I'm not a drug mule
