Moana has a sibling relationship/dynamic with Maui, but I'm not sure why are people shipping them, because Moana is 16 in the first movie and that's weird.
Even though I’m accustomed to Disney heroines not having love interests, I would approve of that for character development reasons. I mean, I freely admitted that everyone could see Broppy as canon long before it actually happened, so it can certainly happen with a ship from a movie people actually like 👍. And both ships do have similar canonical energy, so that fits even better
@ Exactly. Both couples were practically made to be shipped to the point that becoming canon would essentially be a non-event, so nobody should've been shocked by the shipping, just like (I assume) no one was shocked by Broppy being canonized in Band Together. That movie had the BroZone plot to horrify people lol 😂. No lie, everything about how that plot handled boy band dynamics was horribly wrong -- emphasis on "horror" in Baby Branch's case
@@bullmonty764 Originally I was referring to Moana/Maui and Judy/Nick, they’re the ones with very similar dynamic with Eugene/Rapunzel being the original. Older guys who gets dragged/blackmail by their younger heroine forms an unlikely relationship, older guys had sad backstory they’re vulnerable enough to reveal said backstory, etc etc both Eugene and Maui ended up risking their lives to save their heroines, with only one of them end up in a romantic relationship
If it has to be anything, let it be some other guy than Maui. Seeing Maui change into creatures to be Moana's "big brother" to check and see if the guy is actually good for Moana could be funny. Or Maui acting like the guy's rhetorical and actual 'wing-man' toward her could also bring up funny shanigans.
This is the 1st ive herd of a Moana and Maui ship. when the 1st film came out, film theory made a video that concluded with Maui potentially being Moanas' real father. Just in case anyone wanted to feel even more uncomfortable. But hey, that's just a theory, a film theory.
I feel like people just want to ship her with someone and they just latch on to the make character she has the most screentime with. As someone on the aroace spec, I like the idea of Moana never having a love interest and that being a thing that isn't treated as necessary or less than.
I really dig Moana and Maui’s dynamic, but I’ll be SO for real, they both have more romantic chemistry with *Matangi* than with each other - Maui is Moana’s weird favourite uncle, and we love that for them
Well, to a question like this I say to each their own regarding their dynamic, but in my personal opinion, I don't quite get a possible romantic vibe between Moana and Maui. For me, Moana and Maui's dynamic works better as a platonic bond than a romantic bond but if there's a spark there then good for them. Through their interactions while it can be a foundation for a romantic bond in some, for Moana and Maui theirs seems more like a foundation to be besties and a little bit like close siblings. The way Maui cares about Moana may seem similar to someone having romantic affections for someone, but for me it feels more like close platonic or familial affections due to the fact that Maui's past showed that he's never had a close attachment or bond to someone before, so Moana coming into his life changed his life for the better. Like in Maui's song in the sequel, he said that there's not many people that he calls a bestie meaning that he's never had a close attachment to many people but Moana became that exception. This may seem romantic in some contexts but in the case of Moana and Maui, it seems more like Maui has never had someone he could call a friend who cared about him and he cares about back but now he does. So, yeah, to me Moana and Maui's dynamic works more platonic than romantic but to those who ship it and see the romantic spark in it, good for them and I'm eager to read the fanfiction.
I completely agree. They definitely have more platonic vibes than siblings, though I do also agree with the sibling part, but I like them better as platonic soulmate. That said I can definitely understand where the shippers are coming from, if you watched Tangled and Zootopia and came out shipping Eugene/Rapunzel and Nick/Judy, it shouldn’t be a surprise that you also ended up liking the idea of Maui/Moana.

The next theory I'd like to see you tackle on Moana is about her mother, I've seen some theories floating around that people think her mother is actually also a demigod because she has the same tattoo on her arm that Moana has or at least a similar tattoo and we know that people get tattoos when they become a demigod it would also explain a lot of her mother's behaviour within both films I think, so that could be a cool thing to explore for a future film like finding out her mum also has demigod powers and what that means for like giving birth to children as a demigod like I feel like that would be a kind of cool thing to explore like maybe her sister has some powers or maybe it explains why she looks like Graffiti like there could be some supernatural aspects around her mother giving birth to both her and her younger sister that we don't know about because her mother is a demigod and then like what that means, I also have seen people say that they don't think her father is her real father and that maybe Maui is actually her father and stuff like that which is also interesting to think about especially if her mother is a demigod like did she go on a similar journey and then just never told anyone about it so that be cool to see or like a cool thing to explore in the third film so I'd love to see your thoughts on that And whether or not you think that's something that has weight or is just one of those loose fairies that doesn't really hold anything, so I'd love to see you make a video on whether or not Moana's mother is a demigod. Also sorry for any spelling mistakes I use speech to text and it just writes what it thinks it here is cause it may not understand certain words that I say and we'll speak to text it just takes what I say and turns it into words, and visually impaired and the font on UA-cam is quite small so it's quite hard for me to edit and so I use speech to text, but hopefully my comment made sense.
Maui is more of a father figure heck in the legend he was with Moana's mother and that kinda might hint he is her real father don't know if Disney intended that but might explain why she has some power if they make a 3rd I bet the father reveal might happen
I’ll tell you why people want it - because even over a decade after Frozen, they still cannot grasp the concept that not every Disney heroine is required to have a love interest. They also seem to have no regard for the massive age gap between Moana and Maui, which was *certainly* noticed with Ralph and Vanellope… All in all I legitimately feel like the chances of Moana, or for that matter, any other chief’s daughter/princess/heroine in general (except maybe Judy Hopps, cause her best option is right in front of her), successfully finding true love are lower than even the possibility of Nalo being a proper villain. *insert knowing J. Jonah Jameson laughter here lol 😂*
Ew... Moana was literally a baby when they told stories of Maui stealing the heart... He's wayyyy older than she is! Doesn't matter if he's immortal and doesn't age, its still weird.
"Is it too much to ask that a male and female character are just friends or share a storyline or scene without it being a forced romance?" Couldn't have said it better myself. This kind of shit bothers me as well especially the latter. Hell even same-sex characters get this kind of treatment and it's baffling! Can people just not understand that friendship isn't always a gateway to romance?
when i first heard that moana wouldn't have a love interest (i was just a kid back then) i was furious. but then on my first watch i interpreted the heartwarming scenes that moana and maui shared could be romantic. but now, i just see them as a big brother-little sister duo.
Ok i heard this video from a friend that happens to ship them. Personally I don’t have a problem with it, I do like the possibilities of it, especially after Moana 2, if people ships Nick/Judy from Zootopia and Eugene/Rapunzel from Tangled (who I might add also met each other when Rapunzel was still underage) so this ship should not be a shocker for most people. As for fanarts, well buddy you see Maui? And his tattoos? You see how he’s probably incredibly difficult to draw? 😭 also if you’re intriguedI do recommend the japanese tag of their ship they’re pretty popular in the japanese side of the fandom on twitter and their fanarts are mostly just clean wholesome stuff so if you’re somewhat into it but dislike it for being overly romantic take a look, but do avoid pixiv at all cost! Though it is intriguing after seeing Moana 2, I saw a lot of non fandom, non shippers, even ship haters reviewed it and saw some slight romantic sparks between them that not even the shippers themselves saw it, someone working on the sequel must’ve shipped them in some way. Moana 2 also added some scenes and moments that made their relationship very much “not siblings-like” Moana accidentally inappropriately hi fives Maui’s chest they acknowledged how awkward it was, even his mini Maui gets flustered by it, there’s a scene where Maui (probably accidentally) flashes his crotch to Moana with Moana covering her face but also looks like she’s peeking to see then looks away gets awkward about it. I also think their age gap might have an appeal to some, and I say age gap because despite Maui being an immortal 3 thousand years old, he does saw Moana as someone way younger than him, that can muddies thing, if he ever develops any feelings he’s going to feel weird about it or if Moana develops feelings for him (which is a bit more acceptable if the young one is the one catching feelings) Maui wouldn’t know what to do about it, he’ll probably tease her or gently rejects her, its how you play with these characters interactions is what’s interesting. I also disagree about Maui possibly being physically the same age as Dwayne if anything from the way he acts, he comes more as college student/graduate, probably 30s at the latest, but regardless your point about him being older still stands. Edit: so I commented on this initially not being interested in the ship but your video ended up with me having to defend this ship lmao I have to disagree that romance might dampen their good platonic relationship and i’m saying this strictly in the world of shipping not whether or not they should be canon in the next installment, just because friends ended up becoming a romantic couple does not dampen anything special they had with each other. There is such a thing as slow burn, and Moana 2 definitely opens up lots of stories for fic writers. A lot of the shippers i see only like to see them happening years later and not immediately when Moana comes of age. I also have to mention that a lot of the shippers of this in the fandom I’ve seen DOES NOT WANT them to be canon.
in the new one she is 20 but i agree it would still be wrong for her to end up with Maiu since she is tousands of years old and they first met when she was a teenager
Honestly, I just want atleast one story where the female lead and the male lead are just friends. Seriously. Why do people think that women and men can't simply be friends?
Some people seriously ship Moana with Maui? Ew! Moana was 16 when she met Maui, who was already an adult and likely thousands of years old. This reminds of that weird and unhinged AI image of Maui with a pregnant Moana, implying that she’s carrying his child. Gross.
That wouldn’t be a great idea cause Maui is not a teenager like Moana but moni is the new character in Moana 2 so it would make much more sense if he and Moana were a couple
I see why people would ship hundreds of years past and moana love ones died from old age the only familiar face she got is maui in retrospect it makes sense and could be good if it wasn't for the fact that they met when she was 16 plus like u said i think their friendship is honestly great don't want to ruin that but i do see it unlike bruno and mirabel
Immortality makes things interesting here and always muddies the waters when it comes to romances, so what is normally wrong for some is considered okay for others, which you do acknowledge . You bring up the Rock playing him in the Live Action, but personally, I don't think the Rock(and how old he is) is meant to reflect the age Maui is meant to appear as in the 3D movies, and even if he was, I don't think most people view him as old as the Rock. Personally, I would think Maui is presented as being in his mid 30s, some people I've talked to view him more in his late 20s, this would, make it more acceptable in those peoples mind, especially since the Age of Consent in some places is 16(Moana in the first movie, also even some of the states in our own Country of Australia has it this low) and 20(what I've heard Moana is in the second movie and what she might be stuck as age wise as a demi-god) when the theoretical it happening would be more okay in their eyes. If they view it through that lens, I could see how they would think it's okay to ship the two together. Personally, I don't ship, to much learning from each other and growing in a non-romantic(or "Charged" way for the more Primal side of things) to do so. That might change for them in a few centuries down the line, but for now I feel they are more Friends and happy that way then seeking something more between the two.
Oooo Jelsa redemption, do I hear Smartypants?? 🤭🤪 I love romance and crazy ships just as much as the next shipper - but this one’s a “eh, I’ll pass” from me. I can see the concept that makes them “work” in theory, but I can’t *ever* picture it. He gives too much massive young uncle/protective big brother vibes. Heavily agree with your takes about their age gap - she wasn’t an adult when they met, and since he’s a demigod stick at 29 mentality and physically it’s most likely that he’ll always see her as “a baby” in comparison; doesn’t matter if she’s an adult once she became a demigod herself. I highly doubt Disney would let it happen - especially with the Rock standing next to a teenage girl in the live action… 😳 their friendship is wonderful as it is. They are the best of bros for the rest of existence, and that’s just as beautiful as any organic romantic story.
Some shippers are gross. Maui and Moana have a huge age gap so it is a big no no. But Mirabel and Bruno are uncle and niece! Discusting! You shippers need to chill. Take a step back, relax and focus on the thing that is infront of you and stop living in a fantasy.
SPOILERS also Moana was 19 and Maui’s body is theorised to be between 24-25 They’re both demigods now so Moana won’t die but it did feel like they were building it in this movie. I think if disney wasn’t going through their anti romance phase they would have gotten together. I didn’t ship it until I watched Moana two my fave moment was Maui goes to leave for the final fight, turns to Moana and says. “Go as fast as you can. Moana.. I can pull a thousand islands from the sea.. but it would mean nothing if you weren’t there to find them.” ALSO when he loses his powers he looks at her and smiles like “This was worth it because Moana is okay” AND when she gets hit by the storm Maui jumps into the sea to get to her AS A MORTAL. GUYS MAUI CANT SWIM HE WAS LITERALLY GOING TO DIE TO BE WITH HER And he does he just drifts there with her in his arms, then ocean gives them some air and gotta say Dwayne Johnson’s performance got me teary over how emotional he was over her like he was more upset than her grandma 😭
honestly i feel like the small demographic of people who do seem to ship Moana and Maui is mainly kids who see disney movies, hear about shipping, and are too young/ignorant to know why such a gigantic age gap would be an issue. It seems very likely to me that they see the excellent friend dynamic the two have and project romance onto it because they're still trying to conceptualize what romance is. Obviously there are probably exceptions to this, but this likely accounts for why the shipping seems mostly contained to youtube comments and not the wider internet.
maui and moana i am not sure about hiccup and astrid make more sence then moana and maui i just cant see those to be a couble in moana 3 ive always shipped someone when it come to shows and movies i watch like brooklyn and darius from jurassic world or nightwing starfire from dc or marinette and who ever from ladybug unless they are building toword it i just cant see moana and maui get together
You know, when I first heard of this shipping, my first thought was... eww. Like, are those Deviantart-esqu shippers crazy? I agree, fandom ships can be pretty wild, but they're getting out of control very quickly as of late. Moana and Maui should NOT have a romantic arc... EVER! I think they're better off as friends. Plus, I don't think Moana even needs a love interest. Disney is probably going to have her use her demi-goddess powers in any future projects that have her as the main character. Long story short, these fandoms have lost their minds with these shippings, and they're only gonna get worse as time goes on.
Originally I was thinking about Maui and Moana being together while watching the second movie. But Maui was a Demi god n can live basically forever and Moana couldn’t. Then moana became a Demi goddess and I was like YESSS they belong
Moana should focus on herself before opening up to a relationship. I think in Moana 3 in the end credits, when Moana is fully grown, she'll probably have a significant other that is NOT Maui. Maui is like the strong mentor/older brother to Moana. :)
Most Hooked Wayfinder shippers prefer the slow burn, mainly because neither of those characters seems the type to just plunge head first into a relationship. But from a political and diplomatic perspective, Maui is the best match for Moana out of the available characters in the films. She's from an era when marriage wasn't a romance, it was a trade agreement. And now that she's a demigoddess, she'll basically be obligated to strike a divine match. Again, from what we've gotten so far, Maui is the best candidate for her. That said, I don't want them to make Hooked Wayfinder canon. Because I don't trust them with it. This is a ship best left to the fans to steer. They can keep teasing it, and we'll eat it up. But we've got our own crew, thanks. No mice need apply.
Hmmm a mentor demigod over 1000 years old who can never die (probably idk) dating a teenager even though they previously had a depressed uncle fiery neice dynamic. What could possibly go wrong?
Mirabel and bruno shouldnt have anything more than an uncle/menor to neice/mentee relationship. As for elsa and anna welll thats an anime trope gone LGBTQIAOP
Moana has a sibling relationship/dynamic with Maui, but I'm not sure why are people shipping them, because Moana is 16 in the first movie and that's weird.
The relationship between Moana and Maui is more of a platonic friendship than love, that's why I like it more
It's love, it's just platonic love. There's romantic love and platonic love, we need to remember that.
Judy and Nick from Zootopia make more sense than these two
Even though I’m accustomed to Disney heroines not having love interests, I would approve of that for character development reasons. Ew... Moana was literally a baby when they told stories of Maui stealing the heart... He's wayyyy older than she is! Doesn't matter if he's immortal and doesn't age, its still weird.
Hey. I just decided to comment as soon as I saw the video, and I was somehow the first one to comment. I will be considering this a minor achievement.
There’s no way people flamed you for not agreeing with an uncle niece ship. Are we living in the Middle Ages?
people are weirdos
"Is it too much to ask that a male and female character are just friends or share a storyline or scene without it being a forced romance?"
Couldn't have said it better myself. This kind of shit bothers me as well especially the latter. Hell even same-sex characters get this kind of treatment and it's baffling! Can people just not understand that friendship isn't always a gateway to romance?
Maybe yes, maybe no. If we do get Moana 3, I guess we'll just have to find out for ourselves.
This title elicited a visceral reaction out of me. Cringe doesn't begin to describe it.
when i first heard that moana wouldn't have a love interest (i was just a kid back then) i was furious. but then on my first watch i interpreted the heartwarming scenes that moana and maui shared could be romantic. but now, i just see them as a big brother-little sister duo.
Edit: so I commented on this initially not being interested in the ship but your video ended up with me having to defend this ship lmao
I have to disagree that romance might dampen their good platonic relationship and i’m saying this strictly in the world of shipping not whether or not they should be canon in the next installment, just because friends ended up becoming a romantic couple does not dampen anything special they had with each other.
NO!!!! Moana's a kid!
in the new one she is 20 but i agree it would still be wrong for her to end up with Maiu since she is tousands of years old and they first met when she was a teenager
Honestly, I just want atleast one story where the female lead and the male lead are just friends. Seriously. Why do people think that women and men can't simply be friends?
Hormones I guess
what is it with the fandom and shipping? just be friends is more than enough
Desperate for fictional love
It's so fun to watch your videos
Imo no because Maui is older
Short answer. No
Long answer. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Some people seriously ship Moana with Maui? Ew! Moana was 16 when she met Maui, who was already an adult and likely thousands of years old.
This reminds of that weird and unhinged AI image of Maui with a pregnant Moana, implying that she’s carrying his child. Gross.
No. They aren't compatible at all.
I ship Moana with Loto, Maui with Moni and Matangi with Te Fiti (with Nalo as Te Fiti's ex-lover)
Oooo Jelsa redemption, do I hear Smartypants?? 🤭🤪
I love romance and crazy ships just as much as the next shipper - but this one’s a “eh, I’ll pass” from me.
They shouldn’t. He’s a demigod, she’s a human voyager!
Some shippers are gross. Maui and Moana have a huge age gap so it is a big no no. But Mirabel and Bruno are uncle and niece! Discusting!
You shippers need to chill. Take a step back, relax and focus on the thing that is infront of you and stop living in a fantasy.
you’ll find it’s the same kind of people who ship both. I literally get deja vu reading comments of people defending shipping maui and moana.
@@BellaFalk95 This is not as bad as bruno and mirabel. Get some hobbies and get some help and stop getting your panties in a twist over this
@lilac3266 Yuck! And I thought Jesla shippers were gross and pathetic… well they still are but I think these shippers are worse.
Spoilers:
Even though Moana is now a demigod, it’s still weird because Maui is way older than her.
Maui and Moana Forever. 😘❤️
SPOILERS also Moana was 19 and Maui’s body is theorised to be between 24-25
They’re both demigods now so Moana won’t die but it did feel like they were building it in this movie. I think if disney wasn’t going through their anti romance phase they would have gotten together. I didn’t ship it until I watched Moana two my fave moment was Maui goes to leave for the final fight, turns to Moana and says.
“Go as fast as you can. Moana.. I can pull a thousand islands from the sea.. but it would mean nothing if you weren’t there to find them.”
ALSO when he loses his powers he looks at her and smiles like “This was worth it because Moana is okay”
AND when she gets hit by the storm Maui jumps into the sea to get to her AS A MORTAL. GUYS MAUI CANT SWIM HE WAS LITERALLY GOING TO DIE TO BE WITH HER
And he does he just drifts there with her in his arms, then ocean gives them some air and gotta say Dwayne Johnson’s performance got me teary over how emotional he was over her like he was more upset than her grandma 😭
I love Moana
They want it b/c it is an older guy getting w/ a hot young girl.
honestly i feel like the small demographic of people who do seem to ship Moana and Maui is mainly kids who see disney movies, hear about shipping, and are too young/ignorant to know why such a gigantic age gap would be an issue.
I think we just need more friends with different genders
You know, when I first heard of this shipping, my first thought was... eww. Like, are those Deviantart-esqu shippers crazy? I agree, fandom ships can be pretty wild, but they're getting out of control very quickly as of late. Moana and Maui should NOT have a romantic arc... EVER! I think they're better off as friends. Plus, I don't think Moana even needs a love interest. Disney is probably going to have her use her demi-goddess powers in any future projects that have her as the main character. Long story short, these fandoms have lost their minds with these shippings, and they're only gonna get worse as time goes on.
if you ship incest I will publicly shame IDC😭
Tamatoa X Maui Yaoi fight me
Originally I was thinking about Maui and Moana being together while watching the second movie. But Maui was a Demi god n can live basically forever and Moana couldn’t. Then moana became a Demi goddess and I was like YESSS they belong
No
One word. No.
I describe Moana and Maui's relationship as more of friends or something like that 😂.
Moana should focus on herself before opening up to a relationship. I think in Moana 3 in the end credits, when Moana is fully grown, she'll probably have a significant other that is NOT Maui. Maui is like the strong mentor/older brother to Moana. :)
The shipping life is a hard life
7:04 Carrying somebody's lifeless body and asking for help is... a very intimate thing?
*In other news, apparently Disney is now being sued because as it turns out Moana is actually plagiarised.*
Hmmm a mentor demigod over 1000 years old who can never die (probably idk) dating a teenager even though they previously had a depressed uncle fiery neice dynamic. What could possibly go wrong?
Yes
Mirabel and bruno shouldnt have anything more than an uncle/menor to neice/mentee relationship.
As for elsa and anna welll thats an anime trope gone LGBTQIAOP
Ok I think unless we get a thousand years time skip no romance
short answer: no he met her when she was 16 that’s weird
I agree with you
Shipping is strange sometimes
Disney made Rey & Kilo kiss so wouldn't be surprised if they surrendered to the weirdo shippers
I feel like I don't normally say this, but no, they should not be a couple. Even as a shiper, no no no!
Me: idc 🤷♀️
Isn’t Maui in like an adult? And Moana is like 16 or something?
Ew, no.
lmao what?
NO-TP
