  • One morning, Thomas is being cleaned when Gordon arrives covered in mud. Thomas remarks that Gordon looks like he took a mud bath and should have a wash down instead, but Gordon does not care about his appearance and puffs away. A strong wind is blowing and Gordon's driver tells him to slow down, but that only makes Gordon more cross at being dirty and late. At a goods yard at the next station, Gordon sees a sign saying "All trains must wash down daily." James is also in the yard and has just finished being cleaned and Gordon's driver tells him it is his turn now, but Gordon angrily lets off steam and mud flies all over his driver, the workmen, and even James. Gordon's driver scolds him and now, he has to wait until James gets another wash, but Gordon still doesn't care and leaves to pull the express. Sir Topham Hatt is waiting for Gordon at the big station and is shocked to see the big engine looking filthy. He tells Gordon that Henry will have to pull the train instead and orders the big blue engine to get cleaned up at once.
Gordon finally receives a wash down but he doesn't like the process one bit and afterwards, he is ordered pull and shunt freight cars for the rest of the day, much to his anger. James finds the idea of Gordon shunting funny but the blue engine doesn't and continues roughly shunting the cars. Later, James is given the job of pulling the express and is just about to leave when Gordon arrives. He warns James about the hills being slippery and urges the red engine to ask for some help, but James denies this and swiftly departs. Earlier, a storm swept across Gordon's Hill, blowing leaves onto the tracks. Although the storm has passed, the hill is still slippery and difficult to climb. When James comes to the hill, he picks up speed as he tries to pull the train over the hill by himself. But halfway up, despite his best efforts, his wheels begin slipping on the leaves and he rolls back down the hill. Gordon sees everything and after teasing James for not listening to his advice, he decides to help the red engine up the hill. Then, thanks to Gordon's pushing from behind, James makes it over the top and continues on his journey.
That night, Sir Topham Hatt comes to visit the engines at the sheds and sees Gordon looking rather downcast. Thomas then asks if Gordon can pull coaches again, to which Sir Topham Hatt says that Gordon may do so, as long as he understands the importance of having a good wash down and taking pride in his own appearance. As the other engines drift off to sleep, Gordon states that "Dirty or clean, I'm a famous machine," even though there is no one else left awake or around to hear him.
