Thank you so much. My 2007 Accord has had this for two years now but I knew the trick, just put it in neutral and it's fine and I'll live with it. Car thieves will be having trouble starting this thing lol
Mate i was getting an error P1717 and D light was flashing in ODO meter so i used your trick and it worked for me. Now I start my car in neutral only but my only worry is will this harm transmission in long run ?!
@@nitinkhabrani475 It's been 5 years now and still I'm using the same trick and I'm having no issues with the transmission. If you are too cautious ask a pro. All the best.
I been having this problem for years, all I ever did was put my foot on the brake and cycle the shifter and started the car. It usually did start on the first attempt but after the car not starting for me on NYE before leaving to work I am glad I found this video. I really do hope this solves it for me once and for all. Thank you.
Are we twins or something? I had the exact same experience. Just cycled it to neutral every time until on NYE (a little over a week ago) it did not start at all. Took it to a mechanic and they couldn't duplicate it so they said its probably the battery and wanted to replace it for $250... Looks like I'm replacing this switch myself lol.
This happened to me 3 times. The first time had it towed to the dealer they changed the starter. Of course worked fine for awhile left me sit again. Had it towed again they found nothing it started right up for them gave it back.😔 happened again the warranty was about to run out on the new starter they put in (because thats what the dealer said the problem was). I called them told them what was happening they said you can have it towed in they would look at it. I dont know why i did it but i put the car in reverse then back in park and it started right up. I looked uo your video THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHAREING THIS!!!
This is Awesome info. I have 2004 Honda Accord Coupe but 4 cyl. I will remember this forever . You should teach Honda's mechanics how to proper diagnose issues... In my book you are the BEST mechanic as I mentioned in my previous comment . I am very glad that I found you on UA-cam .
Thanks....great video. I plan on doing my 2015 Civic soon. Another possible indication that the switch is bad could be the fact that both"p" and "d" are lit when I first turn the ignition on. There's also a sizzling sound coming from that area. It's been ornery to start here and there, but hasn't stranded me yet. Thank goodness for the Gold Wing backup! Also, I'd be tempted to give those electrical connections a drink of contact cleaner!
Thank you for sharing this video, my 07 Honda pilot does that every now and then. I have to move the shifter a few times and then it will start. I will definitely do this repair on my own thank you very much again!
I am currently having the SAME issues on my 2004 Honda Accord 2.4L EXL as well, every time my car won't start (usually after I parked the car in REVERSE) I then shift thru the gear and put it back to Park position then it will start. Now that you mentioned the what the problem is, I will work on replace the transmission range switch and I hope the procedures is the same as for 2.4L engine. Thank you for a great video.
Hi there exactly the same happened to me today after parking my 2003 EXL V6 Honda Accord in reverse, it took a good 5 minutes to eventually start it would not even crank over in neutral, it ended up cranking over and starting in park after 5 minutes. I have had this problem before in this car
Great video! I just changed mine today! The detail in your videos are straight foward and easy to understand. Any questions i would have had you answered throught the video, great details thanks
This kind of intermittent problem is good reason to carry a few tools in the car, like a test light and maybe a multimeter. You never know when a critical clue, like no voltage on the S post of the starter, will narrow the hunt for a diagnosis.
Same model accord. A friend of mine had the same problem. He dropped it off and i could not get it to act up after two days of having it. The day he takes it back...boom , no start at his house. He takes it to the dealer and they wanted to charge him $500 for ignitionswitch. Long story short, i ended up replacing the safety neutral switch. Problem fixed
My car parts are not lined up but that’s how the piece is and the new one too, the piece you said not to move it is to the other side, what should I do
I've been nursing a bad switch for months, my mechanic mistakenly thought the chip in the key was failing, causing no crank, no start. . For a while, when Park wouldn't work, was shift into Neutral. Then sometimes back to Park, and then back to Neutral. It would always eventually work by just playing with it. Then when even that failed, I would leave it in Neutral and then just lightly bump the selector down or lightly move it up. That has been my go to of late. The switch will be replaced shortly, but these techniques should keep you running for a while.
Great video, very methodical.. Have a question, where does a 2013 civic 1.8L have the neutral safety switch? What is the trouble code for this Honda or a 2013 civic, if any related to this issue?
Had the same problem. Blasted the sensor with CRC electronics cleaning spray and it was good as new, didnt even take it off the car, and I have a new oem spare just in case. lol
@BigDog50001 great video!!! Just recently purchased a 2003 Honda Accord V6. Previous owner said that the car ran hot and motor locked up. When checking for codes, only one that came up was transmission neutral safety switch. Could this be the problem so far as the motor locked up and not cranking?
I had the same symptoms, having to start the car in neutral until it stopped starting in all situations. I obtained the part, changed it according to these instructions, but it still will not crank in P or N. Battery is charged. What next? Please help.
Very clear with excellent camera work and lighting. My 98 Accord shows same intermittent symptoms but I can get it started by wiggling shifter, stepping on brake or doing both. How would wiggling the shifter change things? Is there a mechanical connection to some electrical starter part? Thanks.
There are electrical contacts inside the range switch and the range switch is connected to the transmission via the shaft it slides on to. If the engine computer does not sense that it is in park or neutral, then it will not allow the car to start. When you move the gear selector then that moves the contacts inside the range switch slightly which can cause either a better or worse electrical connection.
@@BigDog50001 Wow, someone on the vast Internet actually read my question and replied. You made my day sir. Yes, now I understand. The car is in otherwise great condition and we use it for winter driving in deep snow. Now I need to find a mechanic to change the switch at a reasonable price. Thanks again.
After reading all the comments trying to figure out how common this is I feel I should ask a really unrelated stupid question. My 2013 Altima starts but won’t go into gear. Is this why my left front tire wears out faster than the rest? Thanks in advance.

Question: Should that TRS be getting any kind of voltage when the ignition is turned to on?. I know that a relay inside the passenger footwell is activated when the ignition is turned on. However, that relay gets power from the ignition, but the ground is tied to the TRS. So the TRS has to be in Park or Neutral for the ground to be in play, which would then sentd the ground signal to the relay, and in turn, the relay sends power to the starter. I'm asking because I tried to bypass and I can't seem to get anything at the plug to the TRS.
My cat cranks but sometimes I have to put it in neutrals it won't die it runs for a while then it dies it does it intermittent I replace the main relay and check the power to the fuel pump I get 12 volts I hear it bussing It runs fine the indies in the middle of the road ? Any ideas honda pilot 2003 3.0 v6
I mistakenly cranked on the shaft you said to be careful not to move or break like a dummy. It didn't feel like I was able to budge it, but now my sensor adjustment never seems to take. Even when I adjust to neutral with the car in neutral, the car tends to read neutral when I'm in Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. Anyone know what the fix might be if I broke that shaft?
On these V6 Accords, the cam sensor is behind the camshaft pulley, attached to the back side of the back cam cover. The timing belt, the camshaft pulley and back cam cover have to be removed to get to it.
Hey Big Dog, I’m having an issue with the car not starting. Won’t even crank. I thought it was the neutral safety switch so I tried putting the car in neutral to start but still nothing happens.. could this still be the neutral safety switch or most likely something else? I’ve tried a different relay as well and still nothing. Thanks!
Could be a lot of things, battery, loose connections, starter, wiring, starter cut relay, anti theft, ignition switch, transmission range switch/neutral safety switch and the list goes on. I would start by looking at wiring diagram for the starter.
My brother in law has a 2003 Honda Civic lx. When he tried to start the car he turns the key but it won’t start. He has to turn the key over multiple times to start the car. I replaced the starter today but problem still persist. Car starts fine when it wants to but replacing starter didn’t fix the issue of having to turn the key on and off to start the car. There’s no force in turning the key so I ruled out ignition. Any ideas?
had the exact same thing happen on a late nineties jeep xj cherokee. would not crank in park. jiggle the shift lever and try to start would sometimes work. put in neutral and it would start. transmission range selector was the fault. simple fix once I figured it out.
Hey i have a similar problem except mine only is that the light doesn't show when I get in reverse but everything works fine. I've been searching and couldn't find a definitive answer. I was wondering if this would work?
It could be a bad transmission range switch causing it, however it could also be other things like a communication or module issue or a burned out LED in the gauge cluster.
@@BigDog50001 last question is it located in the same place as it is on this honda? Because whenever I go to oreilly or autozone they can't pull it up or even know what its called and I keep telling them its the range switch but they just look at me like I'm crazy 😂😂
It is hard to diagnose a car that has an intermittent problem. If the dealer was to start throwing parts at it and didnt fix the issue now they own it and its theres until they can figure out the issue. You have to catch the issue right when it happens.
It is very hard to diagnose intermittent issues, you need to be able to recreate the problem. That being said, many shops are not very good at asking the owner questions and thinking critically which can be key to solving issues like this one. Thanks for the input!

Can you please tell me where the camshaft position sensor is located in this car.
On these V6 Accords, the cam sensor is behind the camshaft pulley, attached to the back side of the back cam cover. The timing belt, the camshaft pulley and back cam cover have to be removed to get to it.
When I switch between gears it'll show that on cluster except for the D1 which is the last gear

Man I just got done doing 2000 Honda Accord transmission b7X9 V6 those transmission are junk but good tip how to adjust range switch
Thanks for the comment!
Good vdo
So what is the totally different issue my car cranks not wont dtdt
I have intermittent no crank in park and neutral.
had the exact same thing happen on a late nineties jeep xj cherokee. would not crank in park. jiggle the shift lever and try to start would sometimes work. put in neutral and it would start. transmission range selector was the fault. simple fix once I figured it out.
Thanks for the input!
I would expect some independent shops no being able to diagnose the problem but for the dealer not to be able to diagnose it is ridiculous.
It is hard to diagnose a car that has an intermittent problem. If the dealer was to start throwing parts at it and didnt fix the issue now they own it and its theres until they can figure out the issue. You have to catch the issue right when it happens.
@@heyitschinoable Ya, intermittent issues are harder to diagnose but that doesn't excuse the dealer for not being able to find the problem.
It is very hard to diagnose intermittent issues, you need to be able to recreate the problem. That being said, many shops are not very good at asking the owner questions and thinking critically which can be key to solving issues like this one. Thanks for the input!
