How to Prune and Stake Cucumbers

In this video I talk about how to Prune and Stake cucumber plants in my garden. Typically cucumbers are grown on a netting or a trellis, but this year I am testing out the method of growing them with a bamboo stake and pruning them similar to tomatoes. Many people warn against pruning - but it will reduce the amount of foliage which will reduce disease, pest, and fungus pressures. Plus it should direct more energy in the main vine, fruits and flowers. This will be especially important for this plant since it is an Armenian Cucumber that can grow up to 3 feet long!

Thanks for subscribing! I got my bamboo at AM Leonard but this year I'm using a coconut netting and steel stakes because bamboo has been kind of tough to come by. The steel stakes are called Takiron stakes and they're really nice because they have some texture that will hold the netting more securely. I'll have to do another video asap!

Hi. Nice video. I love trying out new ideas for supporting plants. Intrigued by this one for cucumbers as it is so clean and doesn't require a trellis.
How did this work out for you? Does the vine top out a 8ft? How many cucumbers develop if pruned to the one vine? Thanks!
