A lot of people are saying Eastern Catholic priests can get married, that’s not true. Married Eastern Catholic men may become deacons or priests, but if their wives die they cannot remarry without being reduced to a minor order.
Both in the west and the east, once a man is ordained a cleric he cannot contract a new marriage.
In the west, married men can become deacons and in rare cases priests.
In the east, married men can become both deacons and priests.
All of this exists in a framework that recognises the religious life to be the life of perfection and a greater state.
In both east and west a man must be celibate (not married) to become a bishop.

The secular clergy do not enter the religious life, as the regular clergy do. So, for the secular clergy, who do not take religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, whether or not they are permitted to marry is a matter for the Church. If the Church did decide that they were free to marry, then they would not be breaking any religious vow if they did then marry. The regular clergy can never marry - they have taken religious vows which permanently exclude entering into the married state.

Why would God choose a married man to be an Apostle of Jesus Christ (Peter) and then the church that claims he’s their first pope (Do you realize Jesus Christ is an Apostle?) does away with the ability for a man like him to be chosen by God in His body again? Do you think man’s rules will stop God from anointing any man He wants to be an apostle today? But men will stand in the way and say we should be more like Jesus and be celibate as priests. Why don’t you be more like Jesus Christ and read His words and let His Spirit help you to think like Him so you can look like Him.
Peter would have been rejected by the Catholic “priesthood” today.

Peter, our first pope actually gave up everything and followed Christ.
      Including his wife and family.
(Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed thee: what therefore shall we have?)
He did not lead a married life after becoming a disciple of Christ.
A priest is In Persona Christi. He is married to the church.
How can he have another wife? His heart belongs to God alone.
This is why in the early church itself, priestly celibacy was made a norm. It is a gift by God to the priest and also to the church.
A married man is not free to give his all to God and His church. He is pulled in all directions. It is not fair even on a natural level- to the person involved, let alone the wife and children.
A priest has to put God and the church first- before himself. His life is a sacrificial one. Just as Christ whom He represents.
Even in some eastern churches with married priests, only celibate men can be consecrated as bishops.
I hope you made a typing error. Jesus Christ is the Son of God- the Second person of the Most Holy Trinity- Truly God and truly man. Our Lord, our King and our saviour. Not an apostle.

@@Lambsown78 you all twist scripture. They left all things. A wife is not a thing. Read 1 Corinthians 7. It explains how a married man is supposed to live. It’s not saying to divorce your wife. Peter did not do that. God would not command to love your wife as Christ loved the church in one breath and then by the same Spirit “Peter, and all men must leave their wives.” Is God confused or double minded? A man is devoted to Christ and that’s why wives are commanded to submit to their husbands as to the Lord. God will always lead by the head and the husband is the head. He created life for order and if there’s going to be marriage there must be a leader. It’s not to be controlling or more important. The man bears the responsibility of listening and following the Lord like Abram and Sarai. If you have a wife who wines and complains as you go you still have to follow and if she wants what’s behind you have to let her go and follow.

As someone who is Eastern Rite Catholic, we still value celibacy however we do not see it as a barrier to priestly ordination - celibacy is a gift, not a given, and just because a man has not received that gift does not mean he should be barred from said ordination (though episcopal ordination is different). As an avid Bible reader, I have also struggled with this passage in regards to Catholic discipline. It is clearly Biblical that priests should be allowed to marry if not encouraged in some instances. Even the first Pope, Pope Saint Peter, was a married man. While the practice may be beautiful in some ways, the enforcement of is not biblical and goes against the practice of most of church history.

Priests can't be married, but decaons can. Priests have to give their whole heart to God because it also says in the bible(book of corinthians I believe) that when a man is married his heart is not given completely unto God its given to his wife and his Time is spent on earthly duties that stem from his marriage. Whereas a priest is free to serve God with his entire being.

I think you don't need to defend this because if you follow the church then it is mandatory to follow canon laws. This celibacy is more a church law and discipline than a dogma or doctrine IE a pope or the council of bishops can change this. Whatever, this is a church discipline and it also shows how successful the church is such that even after 2k years there are people who gives up their bodily pleasures and serve the God.

      @TheCakeStudios7 Місяць тому +2

@@eoinMB3949 You're correct, there is a portion that talks about deacons. But it also talks about bishops, actually the chapter starts out with bishops clearly stating they should be allowed to be married.
You are also correct about 1st Corinthians, however, that is in regards to all men and not specifically priests. Is 1 Corinthians then calling all men to be celebent as you are saying? Of course not, the Bible says a man is to leave his parents and be joined to his wife. Paul also speaks of the wonders of marriage in Ephesians. He's simply speaking of the gift of celibacy, as Paul himself was celibate, but he certainly is not calling all people nor priests to forced celibacy.

    • @TheCakeStudios7
      @TheCakeStudios7 Місяць тому +1

@@AthanSMaliakkalwhile I don't disagree with you, priests were allowed to be married in the church longer than they've been denied the sacrament. If you look into the history, the main reason that celibacy was enforced was due to property rights and the church losing property due to marriage. The enforcement of the practice was not necessarily a religious one.

This is correct. If the celibacy law ever gets repealed in the West, only already married men could enter formation, with the wife having 100% veto power. Once the wife or her priest-husband dies, neither spouse can ever remarry. Those single men who enter seminary will still be bound to celibacy from the get-go. The secular clergy do not take religious vows, as the regular clergy do. So, the secular clergy do not take religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. The secular clergy would break no religious vow if they were to marry. So, if the Church decided that the secular clergy were free to marry, then they would not be breaking any vow if they did so. Celibacy is considered to be a “discipline” to which a Priest is invited to agree prior to ordination. If he decides that he is not prepared to submit to that discipline, then he would not be ordained. However, for those clergy who have come into the Church through the Ordinariate, who are already married, they may be ordained and remain married. However, they would not be able to enter a religious order and take religious vows - the married state precludes the religious state entirely and this is not just a matter of discipline, but something which is inherent to the religious life.

This is a doctrine I can't get behind with the basis of Holy Scripture supporting priests getting married. St. Peter himself was married.
    Matthew 8:14 (ESV)
"And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever."
This verse indicates that Peter had a mother-in-law, implying he was married.
    Many other apostles were married.
In 1 Corinthians 9:5, St. Paul refers to the fact that other apostles had believing wives.
    1 Corinthians 9:5 (ESV)
"Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?"
This verse implies that other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas (Peter) had wives.
St. Paul's charge to Timothy is for church leaders to be "one woman men." Here is evidence that church leaders, including bishops (overseers) and deacons, could be married. Here are a few key passages that address this topic:
1 Timothy 3:2 (ESV): "Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach."
1 Timothy 3:12 (ESV): "Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well."
Titus 1:6 (ESV): "If anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination."

Yes, they can. There are tens of thousands of married Catholic priests today in literally every rite, including the Latin rite. That’s right, you heard me. The Latin right contains priests inducted through the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter from Anglicanism. The Ordinariate is part of the Latin Rite, and many Ordinariate priests have actually been transferred to ordinary Latin dioceses, where they continue to live and serve while married and fully sexually active. Because Catholic priests CAN be married, and have always been married, since the non Latin rites are ancient. Before the 1100s, married priests in the Latin rite were the norm. Before universal enforcement kicked in, they remained in existence quite commonly in the Latin Rite for centuries after. There is absolutely nothing in Catholic doctrine or the essence of the priesthood that forbids a priest from marrying, it is a mutable and changeable discipline that has not existed for the majority of Church history and desperately needs to go away. The Byzantine Catholics and Ordinariate do not have a vocations crisis.

Perhaps a married priest has more commitment to his family. It shouldn't. At any time a priest should be able to approach the faithful entrusted to him at any time, be it night or day. The priest doesn't give couples counseling, but spiritual guidance. To encourage and guide you in the path of sacrificial love for your spouse, children, and your 'neighbour' (i.e. those God has put around you). Who better to show this path of love if not the man who chooses LOVE itself, sacrificing the desires of the flesh to have a heart more available to your concerns?
On that same token (one could argue), how can you have a meaningful relationship with Christ in his sacred humanity since he was celibate? How can you relate to Him or Him to you? That beauty lies there, in that he loves you (each one of us) so much that he forgoes that natural good desire for spouse and family to give his heart fully to you and me. That's the point of celibacy.
It also gives hope (with witness of good celibate men) that God is worth a lifetime to wait for, to belong just to Him.
I'm not the kind of guy to ever comment on youtube videos (first time I have, I think). It's just that I've seen this said by many others and it saddens me. That priest has made the sacrifice for you, as Christ has.
For struggles of married life per se, or to exchange ideas about married life more specifically then it makes sense to chat to other married men. Those who are living a good Christian life in particular.

The Catholic Church in communion with the Pope allows its priests to marry, as in the case of many eastern rite catholics, or oriental Churches. The Roman rite, or the Latin rite which does not allow its priests to marry is just one of the many Catholic Churches in communion with the Pope. Celibacy for priests for those in the Roman Catholic Church is a unique gift to the Church and the world, and the struggles included make it more precious especially in today’s world that idolizes carnal pleasure. Celibacy has continuously produced saints and martyrs than sinners and monsters; many just refused to see and accept it.

The same is the case with American countries. I am an Indian. Christianity is in the minority here. However, many Indian saints have been canonized by the Pope in recent years. The number of priests here is increasing day by day. First, live a role model for your children. Raise them in the faith. Then there will be many vocations in the church. The Pope had to accept many sins because of your ruined life. What should I say? Remember that when there are crises in the church, Jesus is at the helm of the boat that is the church. The 23 Churches sui juris in the Eastern Rites that ordain, as the norm, married men all have a shortage of Priests. Your solution is specious at best and refuted by facts.

@@josephjacob3274 perhaps one could consider the fact that the video was titled as it is in order to attract the attention of Christians of other denominations who might have an innate objection to this Church discipline without wanting to get them bogged down in Catholic ecclesiological structures. I’m certain that the person who titled this video is well aware of the 23 other Catholic Churches outside of the Latin Church.

Well,no....That not true. It's true that there are some Eastern Rite priests who are married, however they were already married BEFORE they become a priest. Not after. An eastern rite priest cannot get married after he becomes a priest.

Which Catholic Bible is the most accurate ?
    Eg Gal 2:7
Duoay Rheims & Vulgate write Paul - Gospel OF the UNcircumcison, Peter - Gospel OF the circumcision.
RSV-CE, New Amer Bible write Paul - Gospel TO the UNcircumcison, Peter - Gospel TO the circumcision.
    Which is correct ?
Gospel TO or Gospel OF ?

I am of the opinion that married priests should be allowed.
I'm actually of the opinion that priests should be allowed to get married even after ordination.
That's my opinion so take it for what it is worth.
