I feel as though many people aren't understanding the true point of the series. It wasn't about being gay or even gay romance. Instead, the series was about one's identity and what happens when the person you thought you were is no longer. In Danny's case, he was always a great swimmer and that contributed a large portion of his identity (as well as being straight, but to a lesser extent). Then he is able to make it to the finals, but fails right before the olympics. Additionally, he realizes that he's into guys. Both of these events are massive blows to his identity and causes him to try to take his own life. In essence, how do we identify ourselves and make sure that our identities are based on concrete ideas of who we are rather that ideas that can be taken away. So while there is only one kiss scene in the whole series, the over all message is so much more powerful.
Hey! Just watched the series and I cannot get it out of my mind because it was so realistic and raw, and I would love to discuss it with anyone! But the relationship between Danny and Martin was so amazing to me, and much more impactful. I really do think they both loved each other romantically. We also did not see other times that they hang out, so it’s up for imagination/ interpretation of what happened during those times. Also Martin always praising and showcasing Danny and his swimming abilities to others (especially at the summer home during Grandmother's birthday dinner) shows that Martin really wanted the family to accept Danny (and begin overlooking his socioeconomic status) and perhaps could gain some indirect support about his sexuality and love for his best friend. All of these subtle, small actions are pretty big pieces of evidence of a closeted individual looking for some semblance of acceptance and support. Also, the dancing scene in the club was another clear evidence of Martin flirting and playing around with Danny. The very constant and intense eye contact really cannot be interpreted as two platonic best friends dancing. I really liked that scene as well. His reaction to the kiss is pretty much another evidence of Martin slowly accepting his love and sexuality, but Danny should have really tried to talk to Martin about it before leaving for his final competition, instead of betting on the fact that Martin would come around to it himself. I think leaving it at that was the biggest mistake which led to the whole downfall. Also when Danny called Martin's home and Mrs. Taylor picked it up, Martin obviously looked terrified. I think it was because he did not want his mother to suspect anything about his sexuality and relationship with Danny. The whole scene really lingered on Martin’s expressions and the cluelessness of Mrs. Martin. Finally, the look that Martin gave Danny after the latter told him he loved him pretty much confirms it all. Its a look of shock and awe that Danny spoke out loud the feelings that Martin also had for Danny, and his reaction pretty much confirmed it for Martin that he truly was either bi or gay. Martin was so shocked because he could never be strong enough to say those words out loud himself, and began to verbally attack Danny and call him a "loser and not good enough". I noticed that throughout the series, no one really mentioned Danny as a loser or not good enough, most of the time it was always put onto Martin (mostly by his parents and Martin himself), thus the tirade against Danny was Martin projecting his own fears and anger towards himself for being gay/bi. It was pretty much Martin being so angry with himself as a failed swimmer and closeted individual, that he exploded with all the anger and pressure of not being accepted. Also it seems that Martin's sister knew Martin was closeted gay/bi, since their relationship seems very close and open, and she either knew about her brother or they spoke about it in secret before. She even tells Danny that "Martin isn't worth it", when Danny is in his room because she knew Martin was too afraid and embarrassed to come out in fear of disappointing their highly dysfunctional and elitist family. I really liked her as well, as she seemed more aware, loving and understanding, as opposed to her parents, and perhaps that is why she accepted Martin and Danny for who they truly were. The sister was also very sexually open and confident, which shows off her maturity and understanding of sexuality and its very fluid and varied nature. I also believe Coach Torma knew that both Danny and Martin were gay/bi and still accepted and loved them. How he always lets them have their own talks of supports and always brings them two together, it just seems that he cared for them fully and always showed support in and out of the pool. In the least, he felt that they had a very deep bond together. Apologies for such a long comment, but I really wanted to get my feelings out. Haha I did not expect this show to be so dramatic and heart-wrenching!!!
Everything you say is beautiful, I really needed to read something like that from someone else. I lived that mini series, danny when he couldn't get out of the pool and gave him a panic attack, he really cried with him, he couldn't believe that the lack of someone as important to danny as he was Martin made him fail, he really I needed and for fear it was not, thanks for your comment.
I bought the series on DVD couple months ago and just watched it all in one go last night (it’s 2:30am now lol) joining the conversation three years late but it was a really good story and chemistry , it was sad that Martin couldn’t Persue his heart deep down and always felt that he wasn’t good enough and judged and cared about whatever one said about him , everything you said is 100% exactly was feeling in the series, i honestly wanted Martin to say something to kelly at the end instead of shaking his shoulders at him, but series conveys an amazing message of resiliency, self discovery and is really good.... who says us Aussie don’t know how to make a good film lol

Honestly martin is not Worth it for danny I was watched a few episodes I really hate martin he and his friends bullying Danny destroyed Danny stuffed I think danny deserved way better

God I hope they'll make a season 2 mini-series, I really love the characters and I wanna have so much more. We got loads but it still doesn't feel enough. And that there will be a sequel book written. When it said 1996 in the beginning, I thought we'd get 20 years later, but that never happened :P
Read the book, there's so much more in there! :D It's not chronological but skips between Danny's childhood and adult life. I don't want to spoil it but it's probably not what you'd expect based on the TV series. These on screen characters look sooo different from what I imagined when I read it haha. Still, equally tugs at the heart strings ;( Must read! :D

I ended up watching the 2nd, 3rd and 4th episodes in one night and couldn't stop crying. No movie or show has ever struck I chord in me like this one did. There is so much depth in the story and I could relate to a lot of what Danny lived through. But nonetheless it was a fantastic drama to watch. SPOILER: One of my favorite scenes in the series is after Danny breaks the world record at Nationals and when he and Martin embrace, Danny says to Martin "I did it for you" :'(

Even tho it was more of a four hour movie, aaah you just want more, and you wanna know how life turns out for them, and if they find happiness and maybe patch things up, and if Danny ever tries to make a comeback, or for Martin to let go of his mother and his family's pressure. God I loved that scene, I think it is my fave one, and the whole sleeping over scene ;)

I had to watch this show for my film and television studies class at university, and I've had to go back and watch it again because it really got under my skin. I never expected to find fanvideos on youtube, so thank you so much for making this - it's amazing and I'm glad it exists because I had no other way, really, to express how the show made me feel.
I KNOW!!! It got under my skin really bad too, and I've ended up with three videos and a fourth on the way. It has been my therapy, and my book just arrived so I'm gonna break that down as well. I just loved this story so much and it's complex characters. God I hope we get a season 2, off book, and get to follow Martin and his family a little bit more as well. I hope they'll soon air it internationally because it deserves all the recognition. Yes! I've actually been working on filling some gaps and silences around Martin's storyline because there's so much that's only said in subtext or that's hidden from the audience, and I want to explore that in writing. It's how I've been coping, much like how you said these videos are your therapy! And yes, I love the cinematography as well.
Oh god all the yes!!! I don't know how many times I've watched the episodes over the last four weeks, and there's SO MUCH! I find new things every time. To me it's clear Martin felt something, and when you put together all the pieces of his family's classist values, his parents (ugh), and all the pressure from them and himself, his actions are obvious. And there's so many small comments, scenes, looks, for interpretation. Just take the scenes where Danny can't perform because he needs to get his head straight (heh oldest joke ever) and feelings under control. I believe it was the same for Martin and therefore he didn't make the cut. Yes, Danny was really good and was Martin's biggest competition, and like his mother said (something like) "since you came here, you ruined everything", I think Danny did to Martin what Martin did to Danny. But Martin chose to prepare for the future, after hearing his mother's finale words on him. God his parents makes me so angry, and that cleaning lady as well lol. Honestly it was such a great series, binge watched it last night, all 4 episodes at once and don't regret it for a moment. Kinda spoilerish; There was one thing that really bugged me though, to the point that I was really thinking about it... like, Danny and Martin obviously had great chemistry (I mean the actors that played them had great chemistry) but at the end of the day in my opinion I really don't think that Martin had any type of romantic feelings towards Danny. I mean he liked and cared for him as a friend, that's for sure, felt some kind of fascination even but they weren't on the same page with Danny on this one. Danny felt in love and it was visible in his actions, when on the other hand Martin was just intrigued I guess. It would explain a lot, in both their actions and so on... I mean I may be wrong but this is how I understood it. Anyway great clip :)
I think Martin's feelings might have been less romantic or sexual or whatever, but just as strong and epic. That can happen, when you have that sort of bond with someone, and one person falls in love, the other doesn't, but that bond is still there. The ending was... I don't know how I feel about it.
They had such a strong bond. When you think about it, they spent a lot of time together in the pool which brings them together very closely. I think Martin felt bromance and deep admiration for Danny. But Danny was in love with his best friend. I've been in Danny's position where I've been in love with my best friend. It's so hard when there's a physical dimension in the friendship (They give each other long hugs, motivate each other and see each other bare chested a lot). And they spend so much time together that it's impossible for Danny's feeling towards Martin not grow stronger. Seeing Danny struggle internally with his feelings and consequently not being able to perform at his best in the pool due to his emotional turmoil was so heartbreaking. That's my perspective
I'm 50/50 on what type of feelings Martin ended up feeling, but they had an incredible bond. I just wished the cleaning lady hadn't walked in on them, you could see Martin was feeling something, however deep or non-romaric that feeling was. Swimming and family ruled Martin's life and actions, he was at peace in a pool under water, and then that was no more. Tho, much time pass, and time we don't get to see, and we do follow Danny, so I guess the situations can be interpreted because of course you want the person to like you back. Did Martin ever talk about Lauren before the party tho? Or, was she just the first girl he saw after he heard the worst he could hear?
in my opinion i think martin did feel a romantic connection, from all the eye contacts, their chemistry, the jerking off lol, and the kiss on the lips!!!
Watching this and reading the comments before watching the show itself, I couldn't even tell who was who because the looks and implied interest seemed to go both ways. Only the kiss gave it away.
I first watched this before the episodes and I thought Martin was the one that likes him and Danny ignoring but it's was completely different. Martin likes him but not like Danny does :( that's kinda sad

No, The Other hated the One, as the One broke the Other's team, but both of them were attracted to eachother from the first and slowly subtly loved eachother but the Other's shame and unable to accept his sexuality and the One's stress about competition led to no discussion about their love and the were not at good terms though the still love eachother. Although this happens always or may be not that often, What do you think??
I wish martin and found out about Danny's suicide attempt them maybe he would've thought about him differently. He should've been clear about not having feeling for him and supported him at the championships as a friend and been there for him
Martin is such a prick tease. I enjoyed the miniseries, but felt like the emotional wrap-up was hurried. Really would have enjoyed a couple more installments to experience the growth the characters experience. If you haven't seen the miniseries, you'll really want to see what happens in the portions of this video that are dark. I held my breath the entire time.

4 years late, I actually think the creators intended for Martin's sexuality to be a mystery. This could explain the scene where the cleaner interrupted their kiss or the last scene with Danny where he just shrugs and doesn't say anything. He could be in denial, the closet, develops feelings with Danny at the end or just sees him as a friend. I think it's up to our own imagination

I had to watch this show for my film and television studies class at university, and I've had to go back and watch it again because it really got under my skin. I never expected to find fanvideos on youtube, so thank you so much for making this - it's amazing and I'm glad it exists because I had no other way, really, to express how the show made me feel.
I KNOW!!! It got under my skin really bad too, and I've ended up with three videos and a fourth on the way. It has been my therapy, and my book just arrived so I'm gonna break that down as well. I just loved this story so much and it's complex characters. God I hope we get a season 2, off book, and get to follow Martin and his family a little bit more as well. I hope they'll soon air it internationally because it deserves all the recognition. It's also really beautifully shot; the swimming scenes, nature shots, and which shooting hours they chose outdoors, are like porn to the eyes, haha. Hope your class went well! x
Yes! I've actually been working on filling some gaps and silences around Martin's storyline because there's so much that's only said in subtext or that's hidden from the audience, and I want to explore that in writing. It's how I've been coping, much like how you said these videos are your therapy! And yes, I love the cinematography as well.
Oh god all the yes!!! I don't know how many times I've watched the episodes over the last four weeks, and there's SO MUCH! I find new things every time. To me it's clear Martin felt something, and when you put together all the pieces of his family's classist values, his parents (ugh), and all the pressure from them and himself, his actions are obvious. And there's so many small comments, scenes, looks, for interpretation. Just take the scenes where Danny can't perform because he needs to get his head straight (heh oldest joke ever) and feelings under control. I believe it was the same for Martin and therefore he didn't make the cut. Yes, Danny was really good and was Martin's biggest competition, and like his mother said (something like) "since you came here, you ruined everything", I think Danny did to Martin what Martin did to Danny. But Martin chose to prepare for the future, after hearing his mother's finale words on him. God his parents makes me so angry, and that cleaning lady as well lol. I definitely think the kiss would have deepened, a lot, if she hadn't walked in on them. You'll have to link me to your work when you've finished, here or on tumblr :D x

Honestly it was such a great series, binge watched it last night, all 4 episodes at once and don't regret it for a moment. Kinda spoilerish; There was one thing that really bugged me though, to the point that I was really thinking about it... like, Danny and Martin obviously had great chemistry (I mean the actors that played them had great chemistry) but at the end of the day in my opinion I really don't think that Martin had any type of romantic feelings towards Danny. I mean he liked and cared for him as a friend, that's for sure, felt some kind of fascination even but they weren't on the same page with Danny on this one. Danny felt in love and it was visible in his actions, when on the other hand Martin was just intrigued I guess. It would explain a lot, in both their actions and so on... I mean I may be wrong but this is how I understood it. Anyway great clip :)
I think Martin's feelings might have been less romantic or sexual or whatever, but just as strong and epic. That can happen, when you have that sort of bond with someone, and one person falls in love, the other doesn't, but that bond is still there. The ending was... I don't know how I feel about it.
They had such a strong bond. When you think about it, they spent a lot of time together in the pool which brings them together very closely. I think Martin felt bromance and deep admiration for Danny. But Danny was in love with his best friend. I've been in Danny's position where I've been in love with my best friend. It's so hard when there's a physical dimension in the friendship (They give each other long hugs, motivate each other and see each other bare chested a lot). And they spend so much time together that it's impossible for Danny's feeling towards Martin not grow stronger. Seeing Danny struggle internally with his feelings and consequently not being able to perform at his best in the pool due to his emotional turmoil was so heartbreaking.

I'm 50/50 on what type of feelings Martin ended up feeling, but they had an incredible bond. I just wished the cleaning lady hadn't walked in on them, you could see Martin was feeling something, however deep or non-romaric that feeling was. Swimming and family ruled Martin's life and actions, he was at peace in a pool under water, and then that was no more. Tho, much time pass, and time we don't get to see, and we do follow Danny, so I guess the situations can be interpreted because of course you want the person to like you back. Did Martin ever talk about Lauren before the party tho? Or, was she just the first girl he saw after he heard the worst he could hear?
in my opinion i think martin did feel a romantic connection, from all the eye contacts, their chemistry, the jerking off lol, and the kiss on the lips!!!

The Other hated the One, as the One broke the Other's team, but both of them were attracted to eachother from the first and slowly subtly loved eachother but the Other's shame and unable to accept his sexuality and the One's stress about competition led to no discussion about their love and the were not at good terms though the still love eachother.

I enjoyed the miniseries, but felt like the emotional wrap-up was hurried. Really would have enjoyed a couple more installments to experience the growth the characters experience.
If you haven't seen the miniseries, you'll really want to see what happens in the portions of this video that are dark. I held my breath the entire time.

4 years late, I actually think the creators intended for Martin's sexuality to be a mystery. This could explain the scene where the cleaner interrupted their kiss or the last scene with Danny where he just shrugs and doesn't say anything. He could be in denial, the closet, develops feelings with Danny at the end or just sees him as a friend. I think it's up to our own imagination
