I've actually heard many stories like this. Small timer businesses contact students to make products for them. Then mysteriously poof. Later on, people find the work being sold by the company or some other group selling their creations. They are small time scam artists that use students to get free work done. The "rep" you talked to most likely was in on things, but same time had no clue what was going on as they tend to scam people at all levels. It gets rather complicated the levels which these guys scam people.
Theres only a thin line between people who refer to themselves as Entrepreneurs and scammers

I had an experience similar to this but the company tried to pay me in the books my illustrations were in... They took iphone photos of my Peter Rabbit inspired illustrations and oh boy the quality was so bad on the prints I just wanted the money. My teachers fought for me to get compensated and I did. Bought an ipad with the money and graduation gifts.

sometimes you find out that when you pour your soul into a design, people dont care. Sometimes they care a lot, especially if they have some other connection with you, like a fanbase. Other times, the value you pour into it is valuable only to you. I cherish those times, because sometimes you need things that are just yours, and they hold so little value to everybody else, that no one will ever think about stealing it.

And that's why those people always go for fresh young artists, coz they easily motivated, manipulated and naive. Been there too haha. Btw I love your racoon's hand animation scrolling on the phone. It looks simple but cuuute.
The design woes of working on "Feature rich project(TM)" on school and ending in blunder is an unfortunate classic of design schools. Unfortunately in order to even sell something you need a good line of competent people to get a profit so don't feel bad for your sock designs (maybe you could sell the socks yourself on print sites or the design to someone else, it's fine if you just want to move on).
Speaking of design woes, projects always fall apart, on top of my head I remember our teacher wanted to create a Habbo hotel like sim for the school, we had all the documentation and stuff done but it never took off. It's always a granted with design but its always about making stuff and see what picks up.

I'm not sure how to define them
That sock sellman should have known better than to info dumb you (an art student that they owed money to) with their tragic backstory. To me that felt more like the guy not knowing how to properly handle his emotions and dumping into random people that they owed money to, his issues.
Then again, i can't be too mad at him either, the whole company was a disaster, and as you mentioned, since it was on the representatives alone, they should have been the ones contacted about it.
TL;DR life is complex and you can't always know the right answer to every situation, just remember that your time is very important and your feelings are completely valid
