This week on the Skeleton Crew, we take a look at Trachodon… Sorry I meant Claosaurus… Sorry I meant Thespesius… Sorry I meant Anatosaurus… Sorry I meant Anatotitan… Sorry I meant Ugrunaaluk… Sorry I meant Edmontosaurus, that’s it Edmontosaurus.
As a kid I always had this weird assumption that all hadrosaurs were kinda small, like 50% the size of T. rex. Finding out how big they often were was like standing next to a moose for the first time in terms of size shock.
15:20 It's called March of the Dinosaurs, and it's actually the old Edmontosaurus that starts to become aggressive to the protagonist baby. The reason is because its got a brain tumor as stated by the narrator
Besides Maiasaura, I'm a bit sad that Frontier didn't use the Edmontosaurus's body plan for this game's other hadrosaurs. If they did, I'm sure we would have seen more of them in S tier.
Lowkey the T.Rex hunting sequence in Season 2 of Prehistoric Planet is one of my favorite scenes in the series, simply because it excellently visually represents the size of these absolute units of hadrosaurs and that even for a giant predator like T.Rex they aren’t easy prey. But for this game in particular, Edmontosaurus is actually one of my favorite hadrosaur designs and I LOVE the bucking social animation behavior they use. It makes them look and feel all the more lifelike, and dare I say not unlike a herd of wild horses.
The Edmontosaurus genus is the borg of hadrosaur genus names; slowly assimilating other hadrosaurs until they are all Edmontosaurus. In all fairness Ugrunaaluk was my favorite hadrosaur name, and I’m sad it’s not valid currently.
Edmontosaurus is such a fantastic model, I’m so glad Frontier used Csotonyi’s art as a base. Hopefully in JWE3 they can make it actually a formidable opponent in combat.
The JPOG Edmontosaurus would always be my canon Edmontosaurus. The colours are a bit weird and the sounds as well, and I love it. Sich a great unique look to the animal
Like large, extant herbivores I bet Edmontosaurus was aggressive and territorial; I get Moose energy from this animal. As beautiful as it would be too see in the wild, it would be unnerving as well. Wish it would have made, even a brief, appearance in the Jurassic World movies. Maybe this next one coming up.
it can't be too territorial knowing it was probably a social, herding creature with common nesting grounds. But I'm sure dominant males would beef with each other quite frequently. So maybe not quite moose energy but rather elk or horse.
57:57 And what a meeting it was! Thank’s again for giving the presentation, James! We have had overwhelming positive feedback! We can probably talk about bringing you back sometime in the future!
Also I'd like to say if Edmontosaurus were alive today, I'd like to have a baby version, and train it to be ridden like a horse, so I could just run around on this thing that weights.......idk like an elephant and a half? Either way it'd be cool
I don't think the argument "they wouldn't be raising their kids in the arctic circle" holds up. In almost all migrating animals (birds, bats, caribou etc.) breeding happens during the summer, at their northern habitats, while the winter is spent somewhere down south where the cold is more tolerable.
There's a page in Robert Bakker's "The Dinosaur Heresies" which shows a sauropod having its tail being eaten by mammals because it was too cold to do anything about. He was arguing in that chapter that gigantothermy (or mass homeothermy) wouldn't work because rainy seasons would sap their body heat and leave them torpid and vulnerable. Granted, this is a 1986 book and science has marched on from there, but that's the example I think of when the topic of gigantothermy is brought up.
This is one of the strongest herbivore designs in the entire game, it's nothing short of gorgeous. But I guess that's to be expected from anything designed by Julius Csotonyi. If this design is ranked anywhere below H tier, I will destroy all the tables in my house.
This is definitely a stellar design for my favourite hadrosaur, I love how much information we can attain from its fossils and how that, in turn, can inform amazing designs like this. I believe the paleo doc Scott was referencing was March of the Dinosaurs which (for me) was a British doc I had on DVD about a young Edmonto called Scar and a adolescent Troodon called Patch, but it actually wasn't a Pachyrhino with dementia in the narrative of the doc, Scar does encounter an adult pachyrhino while separated from the herd but also an adult Edmonto with a brain tumour that causes it to act irrationally and ends up dying in combat with an Albertosaurus that nearly died to a volcano-caused mudslide. It was wild XD
Oh yessss the Edmontosaurus, at the Senckenberg Museum Is my 2nd Favorit Dinosaur fossil they have there. Just Love looking at that wierd flesh mitten.
One of my favorite hadrosaurs, they nailed the design and I like that it's at its real-life size, rivaling the game's Tyrannosaurus. Really wish it was able to defend itself, though.
Like Scott, this game's design (and the first as well) is easily my favorite for this animal so far. I remember wanting the viral website design as a skin for the JPOG Edmontosaurus for quite a long time (before JWE released), so I was very glad to have it in JWE when it released. Easily one of my favorite animals in the game, and that's saying something as my favorite hadrosaur has been saved for last by the wheel. Also loved learning more about the history of those mummy specimens, and its discovery. It's why I really enjoy watching your videos, fun rankings aside. Looking forward to what you guys have to say for the next episode. Acrocanthosaurus is one of my favorite theropods, ever since playing JPOG introduced it to me, but the JWE game design misses the mark for me (because of the head shape really).
Scott is midly closely. There was a pacyrhinosaurus in the documentary that tagged along. But the old veteran with the brain tumor was an old edmontosaurus.
Yessss the Regal lizard of Edmonton is an S Tier Design. The Favorit prey animal of the Tyrant Lizard King, according to JPOG. Annd in 11 Episodes the King grabs the Stage. Edit: Frontier should fix all of the Dinosaur feet and make ALL Hadros quadropeds.
7:23 Bundaberg spotted? well since I mentioned Bundaberg I'm legally allowed to talk about how the Australian accent has a lot of very lengthened vowels and has been joked to be "english accent slowed down by heat exhaustion"
3:54 I do love this model. I think it looks a bit cartoony in game but it as it appears on the website it is the canon Edmontosaurus though I do slightly prefer the Prehistoric Kingdom design when I think about it, especially because of the green skin. So many fond memories of this guy in JWE1 especially.
Also I'd like to say as well, Im familiar with the documentary Scott was talking about somewhere between the 17:00 and 18:00 minute mark, and it's actually another Edmontosaurus that has the problems with memory, not the pachyrhinosaurus. Also the documentary is called March of the Dinosaurs. It's really good, actually you guys should do a review on it or something sometime, I think you'd like it
In fact, there are several examples of modern reptiles living north of the Arctic Circle (i.e. the viviparous lizard throughout a significant part of its range in Scandinavia and Russia, and the adder on the Kola Peninsula). And it seems that a very important limiting factor for them is the availability of suitable places for overwintering. Yes, modern reptiles do not live in the Arctic deserts and in the northern tundra, and there are few of them north of the Arctic Circle, but it is not "never north of the Arctic Circle."
one of the prettiest edmontosaurus ive seen now all i need is a Shantungosaurus and for it to beat up a Tarbosaurus please? please frontier? also do the thing you do with all the large animals and make it huge? plz :3?
I just want to point out that places north of the polar circle are not in eternal night for half the year. Even at the north pole the polar night only lasts from November 12 to January 28.
The deterioration of the climate into the Maastrichtian was probably greater than what the generally consensus had been. Winter conditions akin to that recorded in the Prince Creek Fm occurring much father south at 63 degrees north latitude in the Cantwell Fm. Infact our record of high latitude climates in the Maastrichtian are tantalisingly limited, though palaeothermometry methods might indicate similar conditions to the early middle Miocene. So hey maybe Edmontosaurus got to experience some borderline Tundra environments by the end!
There actually are two species of non-avian reptiles that range north of the arctic circle nowadays. Zootoca vivipara (the Viviparous lizard) and Vipera berus (the European adder) both range north of the actic circle in a couple nordic countries, albiet not very far north of it.
To address your point on the pronunciation of "Edmonton" i figured out that its probably a holdover from the british because generally americans will pronounce the second syllable of a word as the "long" one whereas the brits tend to do the first syllable. Think garage for example. Obviously this is variable a little per person but i think its an interesting difference in the approach to a language that is by most other metrics basically identical between certain groups and areas. The correlation of lattitude is certainly interesting though "You never get reptiles North of the Arctic circle" WEEWOOO WEEWOO THE FUN POLICE ARE HERE... the European adder occurs north of the Arctic circle and (to my knowledge) is the only reptile to do so :)
Hey scott, what happened to the edmontosaurus at the uofm Museum. Went there for a visit for the first time in 20 years and it wasn't included in the new display . I was bummed i remember it was quite large.
Very late response, but I was actually one of the ones who dismantled it for the museum move. Unfortunately during deconstruction and removing the fossils from the mount, it was discovered that the material was too fragile to be put on display in the manner envisioned. It was actually replaced with the Cretaceous bait ball with the fish, Dolichorhynchops and Hesperornis. It’s currently stored in the collections
